Museo de Arte de la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público Antiguo Palacio del Arzobispado

Photographs by Bill Bell

This museum traces its history to 1530 when Juan de Zumarraga acquired two houses built by the conquistadors Andres Nunez and Martin Lopez on the ruins of the pyramid of Tezcatlipoca, lord of the underworld and protector of warriors in the Aztec culture. There he established the Bishopric of Mexico, second in New Spain. The building was expanded over the years and had various functions as the seat of the diocese. In 1629, as well as many buildings, is buried under mud after a flood magna.
