festivals featured in
our calendar.
The ones listed below are particular to Chiapas de Corzo)
January - All Month Sitting Child.
Celebrated statewide. A child sits in
a small chair and sings to God. The party host gives the child a bag with honey
wafers, sweet wine and tamales.
January 15-23 Feast of the Lord of
Esquipulas
Celebration of the Black Christ,
Dancing, feasts. Pilgrims leave for the Basilica of the Black Christ in
Guatemala.
June - Chiapas state marimba
It's time to dance Catalá – a
pre-Hispanic dance represents Quetzalcoatl, who has either on his shoulders or
back and waist, the head of a plumed serpent. He holds a machete to fight the
Jaguars. It is a struggle between heaven and the underworld. The music for this
dance is interpreted as part of an old ritual that invokes the gods and the
rain.
