January - All Month
Sitting Child. Celebrated statewide. A child sits in a
small chair and sings to God. The party host gives the child a bag with honey
waifers, sweet wine and tamales.
February - February 2
Santa Maria Candelaria
La Candelaria is held in Tuxtla Gutierrez. Relates to the
Virgin Copoya from community Copoya the valley.
April 20-27 - Feast of San Marcos
A popular fair dedicated to the patron of the capital.
Highlights include traditional processions with offerings formed of leaves and
sweet fruits.
3 May - Feast of the Holy Cross
Pilgrims arrive in the suburb of Tehran at the temple
carrying leaves of cattail repeating a ritual of ancestral origin.
Early June - International Marimba Festival
The occasion brings together marimba concert masters and
great performers from several countries.
August 16-25 - Feria de San Roque
One of the more traditional block parties in Tuxtla
Gutierrez, craft stalls, sweets and rides.
Second half of October - Carrera Panamericana
Car race and Rally. The race starts in Tuxtla Gutierrez and
ends in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
Late November and early December - Chiapas Fair
It is the leading trade fair in the capital and one of the
highlights of the Southeast region of Mexico.
