1985earthquake September 19

An 8.1 earthquake struck Mexico City on September 19 1985 at 7:19am and caused the death of at least 10,000 people although the real number could be closer to four times that amount.

The event caused an estimated 4 billion dollars in damages – 412 buildings collapsed and 3,124 others were seriously damaged.

While the epicenter of the quake was located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 350 KMs from the city, the robust nature of the quake and the vulnerability of DF – on a filled lakebed – proved to be a deadly combination. The tremors ran for 3 to five minutes – toppling buildings and crushing people with debris.
