La Peņita Express Bulletin Board If you have not received an email from Dorothy lately (about hats etc), please write her immediately....editor@ontheroadin.com Revised meeting time 12 noon October 24. All new folks MUST attend.
La Peņita Express ll - The Second Generation Information Index
2- way Radios & Map order Money in Mexico
Other than the participants and leaders, no-one will know about it. Visit the Express 2 Bulletin Board often in case you miss an email or delete it etc. I will post your personal email addresses so let us know if you do NOT want us too. If you wish to post something to this spot let me know. Send us a picture of you so we will be familiar with who we are speaking to and can get used to your names. I am sending you all a note letting you know that I will be sending you a small data base with your names, rig type and size to each other. If you do NOT want the other caravaners to have this information please let me know immediately. The list will NOT include maybes or interested parties - only confirmed travelers. So far the confirmed and paid list is approximately 30 people. There will be around 40 of us going. The cost of each campsite is around $18 - 20 per night. I will get you some accurate info on toll costs soon.
General Info About the Caravan This is a one-way caravan to La Peņita. You are responsible for your return home. We are confident that you will find it "no problema" especially after the course and with the drive down. Last year the caravaners just seemed to buddy up and returned together. I think it was for company mostly - not the trepidation of driving in Mexico. Go slow, drive during the day and take breaks. Remember we are NOT liable for you or your rig and you are taking sole legal responsibility for this trip.
October 24th Tucson We will give a 3-4 hour prep-presentation at noon, provide you with our CD. This normally costs $70 but is free. October 25th Tucson We will go shopping for all your last minute things and be ready to roll for the following morning. October 26 Tucson drive to San Carlos We will get up early and leave at 6:30 - 7 in the morning.; drive to Nogales and cross the border; do all the paperwork and then drive down to San Carlos.
October 27 San Carlos We will go shopping, get you used to things etc.
October 28 San Carlos drive to Los Mochis We will drive to Los Mochis and stay the night . The RV Park is boring but we will have fun. October 29 Los Mochis drive to Mazatlan We will get up and drive to Mazatlan. Dinner out?
October 30 Mazatlan
October 31 Mazatlan drive to La Peņita We will be driving via Tepic. There is a downhill grade from Tepic that goes for about an hour. It is curvey so we will take it slow. The Park will have just opened so will be a bit rustic. Crews will be doing their best to get things in tip-top shape and the park will be almost vacant. It is nice and warm!
Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition. We are not rig experts and cannot fix major breakdowns things for you. If you break down we will get you some help but in the scheme of things "The show must go on." Obviously if your tire develops a flat or something similar, there will be folks to help. Please read this about breakdowns - click here. There is a service provided by the Department of tourism called The Green Angels. If you do not know what I am talking about Click here. I am going to ask that Bill and Grant to compile an up-to-date list of spare things for rigs to bring to Mexico. I know that high pressure stems for your tires would be on that list. We will send that along.
Please let us know of any medical considerations you may have. We don't want any surprises in Tucson. Check around now about Medical Travel Insurance. Every policy is a bit different. We sell a book from our website that addresses Medical concerns in Mexico. It suggests what shots etc, what insurance companies, discusses medical services in Mexico and lists English speaking doctors in major centers. It is brand new on the market. I received my copy two days ago and I recommend it strongly for anyone going to Mexico - even the old hands that have traveled many times before. It even has a translation page for medical concerns when talking to a doctor. This is a really great resource and I strongly suggest you purchase it. Please go here to read about the book. Click here. While you don't know me yet, I can tell you that I wouldn't recommend it this highly if I didn't think it was good.
As you know you MUST get vehicle insurance for your rig. We think it is never too soon to check out or plan for this. We have an advertiser that we think is great and that we go to for our needs. Carole goes to others and will probably make recommendations to you too. We don't think it is a good thing to buy insurance at the border. We find that we make wrong choices because we are excited and want to get going. Also we think that the best companies are on the internet. So shop around. to know more about why you need Mexican Car Insurance Click Here Our advertiser, Mexpro, is competitive and we ask that you try them for a quote. They have said that they will give us a caravan rate so you must phone them at 1-888-467-4639 extension 22 to get the GE Caravan Rate discount. Ask for Hannah. Cheryl and Cornel, Jim and Linda have said that the rates are great! The caravan discount is a really good price!
There are some pretty poor maps of Mexico out there. Guia Roji makes the best and it is a mandatory must buy for the caravan. Get the small book size for all of Mexico. (approximately 12 X 15) They are hard to find. If you want me to get one for you, please let me know ASAP.
In order to talk to one another on the road we require good walkie talkies. For those of you who have some already please check to ensure they can reach at least 8 miles or 12 kms. If you are purchasing new ones, get the most Kms you can and ensure they are rechargeable. We only require 1 per rig but they are usually sold in pairs. We are asking you to window shop first and report your findings to others. The most important feature is the miles/kilometers that they can reach. In our experience they never go as far as they claim - signal can't go around corners or buildings well. These will be important communication tools while we travel and communicate from rig to rig. If yours doesn't transmit properly, then we can't help you. If the batteries die....we can't hear you. It is annoying and distractive to others if yours is a poor quality and sizzles all the time. Don't worry about not needing them in the future. These are handy once you are in Mexico for various things. For example they make backing up easier as you don't have to just yell and point while your partner tries to understand your signals. They can save on bumpers, tempers and even marriages. They are also great when you go to a city together and one person wants to go off on their own for awhile. We have used them extensively with our kids when they go to town and we stay at the park. So start window shopping now and post some recommendations on the La Peņita Express 2 Bulletin Board. If you find a good solid pair of walkie talkies, for example, that can reach 12 miles for a deal ($50?) then let everyone know. Bill and I are in Mexico so we can't be browsing the Wal-Marts, Best Buys etc. We wish we could.....but we have to stay here in Mexico basking in the sun, mixing Margaritas and cracking open all those Pacifico's.
We can be reached from now until August 1 most mornings (we are very early risers) at 011-52-327-274-1150 until Ocober 14th. Our computer phone, with a Washington State Phone Number is 1-360- 283-5534 Additionally Dot will be in Vancouver BC September 6 - 11, in Seattle and Washington September 12 - 15, and Vancouver again September 16 - 18. She will be teaching some courses, visiting friends and relatives as well as getting books/ supplies for my kids schooling.
