East Cape RV Park

The following is an excellent write up by Orene Clarke/ 2005

East Cape RV Park

Los Barriles, Baja Sur, Mexico

East Cape RV Park is located in the little village of Los Barriles, right off MEX 1 highway, on the Sea of Cortez, about 45 miles north of Los Cabos and 65 miles south of La Paz. Owned and operated by Theresa Comber, from Idaho, US, it could easily be called the prettiest RV Park in Baja.

Beautifully landscaped with Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Palms, cactus and citrus trees, the large sites offer privacy and leisurely living.  The wide park roads offer easy access to sites by all types and sizes of RVs, and plenty of room for patio set up and parking for an additional vehicle.

 Rates: (2005 season)

$21/night

$125/week

$360/month

 Number of sites:

total-55 (4 pull through)

Park Amenities:  Pool and spa, beautifully tiled bathroom and shower facilities, Wi Fi internet access, and a laundry and drying yard. Full hook ups of electricity, sewer and water are available at all sites. Vendors come to the park on a weekly schedule selling fresh breads and pastries, fruits and vegetables, shrimp, and tamales. Drinking water is delivered twice weekly in five gallon jugs to sites that desire it.  These items are very inexpensive and the food items are delicious and fresh.

East Cape RV Park offers its own charter fishing and coastal touring through Congo’s Awesome Sportfishing, on their large cruisers, “Awesome” and “Too Awesome” operated by partner/Captain Jeronimo “Congo” Cosio.

East Cape offers sites for long term lease, (“permanentes”) and they are large enough to accommodate spacious palapas, a popular Mexican style palm-thatched roof.

The surrounding area: The white beaches of the Sea of Cortez are about 300 yards from the park and easily accessible by foot or vehicle. Los Barriles is known for wonderful fishing, and charters are plentiful.  Los Barriles is also a wind surfing mecca, and on many days the wind surfers dot the bay like dragonflies. Snorkeling is superior nearby at Punta Pescadero and Cabo Pulma beaches.  Hiking and bird watching are both favorite activities by visitors to the Los Barriles area.

Most areas of the town are accessible on foot, and quads (ATVS) are available for rent by the day or the week.  This allows exploration of the hills and arroyos that surround Los Barriles.  Must not miss – nearby village of Santiago, with its zoo and beautiful town square, San Bartolo a tiny mountainside palm oasis nestled on the edge of a hill, and Buena Vista, reportedly a favorite fishing and vacation spot of the late John Wayne.

Churches: There are local Catholic and Protestant churches that offer services in both English and Spanish.

Airports: International airports are located in both La Paz and Los Cabos.

Medical:  There is a good dentist and general medical clinic in the village.  Larger hospitals are located in Los Cabos and La Paz offering high quality care at very reasonable cost. Ambulance service is available. English is spoken.

Shopping & eating:  Quaint little shops featuring Mexican pottery and general supplies, including RV supplies, dot the main streets, as well as two good grocery stores, and an office store that features fax and other services.  There is also a lovely internet café right next to East Cape RV Park. There are a good variety of eateries, for both American and local foods. Try the super burritos at Simon’s Las Palma Taqueria – anyone can direct you there and they are fabulous!

 Sunrises and Sunsets:  Spectacular!
