Coined by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the name “United Nations” was first used on January 1 1942 during the Second World War when representatives of 26 nations adopted the “Declaration of the United Nations.” Members pledged that their governments would continue fighting together.

United Nations Day was proclaimed in 1948, marking the anniversary of the 1945 of the United Nations Charter.   In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a holiday,
