Jaltemba Notes

Veteran's Tournament A Winner  (For More Photos go to http://www.ontheroadin.com/express/veterans_day_golf_tournament_pho.htm)
A large crowd of veterans and their supporters turned out yesterday to the Annual Veteran's Day Tournament at Campo de Ensueņo or Field of Dreams Golf Course in El Monteon.

The day started at 10 am and at 1 - 1:30 the teams rolled back to the 19th hole to celebrate. A fantastic smorgasbord of food was prepared by the Roadkill Grill - featuring their famous pork Ribs as the main course.

Resident Golf Pro and Tournament Organizer, Gary Stackhouse welcomed the crowd and introduced a special guest to address the tournament. David Lord, a National Servie Officer of the Purple Heart Organzation spoke first of his oversees experiences in Vietnam and subsequent return to the US. He spoke of his personal experiences trying to get help for himself and his father, another vet from WW ll.

According to Lord, things have changed for the better. The Mexican Veterans hospital, reportedly an excellent private institution, now accepts American Vets at the same fee - $17 a day - as it charges Mexican Vets.Lord briefly outlined other benefits and programs and made a commitment to the crowd to return within the month to address a meeting and answer individual questions.

Later the crowd observed a moment silence to honor all vets and later another moment for troupes currently overseas.

It was a great afternoon with backslaps, handshakes and kisses all around for returning snowbirds and permanent residents.

Winners were Jaime, Ron, Val and Ross.

MS Maneras

Dear Ms. Maneras,
My husband plays golf on Thursday with those sharks down in El Monteon. They play "Wolf" or "Lobo". He is now coming home and telling me he is winning although I know he is the worst golfer on the face of the planet.
Cheryl

Dear Cheryl,
Ms Manners plays golf often and she is entitled to receive that award for worse golfer in Monteon. She also suggests you are far too concerned that your husband is loosing a few pesos or cervesas to a simply wonderful handful of gentlemen.
Ms Maneras

Dear Ms Maneras,
I asked a friend Tina to housesit my home while I returned to Canada for the summer. I have a modest home but an extraordinary garden in both the front and rear of my home.
When I came back to Sayulita, 1/2 my garden was destroyed and I had to replace 10 of my beloved palms. Many of my potted plants were overwatered and they rotted at the roots. I honestly don't want to even talk to her any longer.
Janet

Dear Janet,
Ms. Maneras thinks that you may be confusing house-sitting with property management. A housesitter is not a paid position and should not be required to do extensive maintenance, gardening or renovating. A housesitter trades security for the home for free rent.  Gardens in this area require constant and attentive care. It can take 4 hours or more to water some of the larger gardens at many homes and often this must be done 2 -3 times a week. If you wanted a gardener you should have paid for one and made sure they were reliable enough to provide constant care in your absence.
Did your friend Tina provide good security? Was she there to handle emergencies? Did she contact you when problems arose? These are, unless agreed upon in advance, the role of a housesitter.
Perhaps you should draft a clear memorandum of understanding with your next housesitter and consider hiring a gardener for extensive watering and mulching.
Ms Maneras

Dear Ms Maneras,
I have just returned back to the area and what changes have gone on! I cannot even go out to a restaurant or bar in peace without hearing one person or another talk about all the local gossip. The breakups and makeups this summer have certainly kept the towns tongues  wagging. Can I just have my dinner in Peace?
Franz

Dear Franz,
Ms Maneras thinks you have lost your sense of humor. Instead of thinking the gossips are taking delight in another person's misery, why not change your attitude. Consider them amateur story-tellers. Correct their grammar. Tell them when they are dangling their participles; educate then regarding the most outrageous superlatives. Enjoy the exaggerations and attempts at news. Laugh out loud when they say "don't tell anyone but..."
You are absolutely certain to be eating alone and in peace.
Ms Maneras

Ms Maneras is a regular columnist for the Express and will be contributing often. She has earned a BA in History and Fine Arts at the University Calcutta and a MA in Diplomacy from Auckland University. She has extensive counseling experience from the Betty Chrysler Foundation where she spend 2 years in intensive programs after being fired from the La Penita Express.
She lives in the area with her husband and Siamese cat called "Cat". She has written 3 books on manners and politeness in the tropics and while none of them have been published, she still remains steadfast in her beliefs that people in Margaritaville should be civil to each other.
