Jaltemba News & Notes Christmas giving spirit and a special welcome back to Bob Howell
By Rosemary Robb Senior Reporter
Click on any photograph to view in larger format
We were invited by George, of Hotel California fame, to attend the Christmas party at Chula Vista school this morning and we two grinches were finally pushed into the Christmas spirit by the marvellous party put on by Bob Howell and Vicki Flores and their band of dedicated volunteers.
Facts may not be entirely accurate, but it's our understanding that Bob (whom everyone was pleased to see preside over the event) and Vicki have been hosting these parties for about six years now, with the inimitable Danny Milski doing an amazing impression of the jolly red guy for about four of those years. (It was the red croc sandals that really reminded us we were in warm climes.)
Every year they select a different school to share their gifts and food with, and this year it was Chula Vista. Twenty five to thirty volunteers helped give goody bags of toys and candies to about seventy or eighty children, whose families also had bags of donated clothes, eyeglasses and school items available to them. Most items had been bought and delivered from north of the border, and each child received either hot wheels type cars, small toys or refurbished Barbie dolls whose costumes had been lovingly crocheted by Geri Demoss and Dawn Blevings. These ladies had worked for over six months acquiring, cleaning, restoring and clothing over three hundred Barbies for the party and for Vicki to hand out as needed over the next year. Enough cannot be said about the dedication that takes.
The excitement on the kiddies faces was amazing, as they tried as patiently as possible to wait their turn to visit with Santa. In the background was the smell of burgers and the hum of activity as Santa - hatted folks got the lunches ready for all the guests.
A very pleasant addition to the festivities was a performance of Folkloric dancing, presented by the Calle Folklorica dancers of La Peņita, and the singing of a very talented young man from Compostela, Juan Pablo.
Ken and I were delighted to have been witness to this celebrat ion, and I would like to suggest to anyone who can in any way help out in future years, that you will never feel so good about anything as you do when seeing children celebrate a Christmas they otherwise might not have.
Never can enough be said about the time, money and effort put in by the people who make this happen. From those who donated a few items, to those who spent their days cleaning, wrapping, cooking, scouting and organising, it would not have happened if it weren't for those kind hearted individuals who only want a look on a small child's face as thanks. We thank you

Grande Opening & Christmas Party in the Largest Palapa Restaurant in the Area
Residents of the area flocked to the Grande Opening of the El Tiburon Restaurant in Rincon de Guayabitos last evening in large numbers to dance and dine under the largest Palapa in the Bay. And Grande it was.
The Palapa, measuring 22 by 45 meters rivals many of the lot sizes in the area. Tables and chairs give ample room for at least 500 people to dine without bumping into one another. The ample cement dance floor is smooth and easy to dance on - with plenty of room for even the most....interesting dancers. The restaurant and entertaining venue holds great promise to be one of Rincon's best.
We arrived and were ushered to our seats and introduced to all at our table including Armando the owner. Drinks and service was prompt and professional. The buffet - an what a
buffet it was - included a salad bar, traditional Christmas Turkey, Mexican foods and even a Vegetarian option. Beautiful grand cakes, flan and lemon pie topped off the meal.
And the Mexican-Norte Americano crowd was decked out in it's finest festive attire. (Jeese some of you clean up so good) Women wore beautiful evening gowns and colorful festive clothing; Men, in "Jaltemba Bay casual wear". Notable characters, business leaders and professionals from our community were pleased to attend the evenings festivities.
Rincon's favorite "Ja'Qui and the Perez Brothers" opened the evening's entertainment up with Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby" and the dance floor immediately filled and it remained full for the rest of the evening. Ja'Qui and the boys belted out favorites all evening; well known danceable tunes in both English and Spanish, and didn't disappoint a soul in the house.
The El Tiburon Restaurant plans to be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during the season. This year they will hold a large New Years Event. Ja'Qui and the Perez Brothers will play often and hope to make this their home venue.
Food is ample and excellently prepared. Service is swift and well planned for larger crowds and quick service. Parking on the street appears to pose no problem. A wonderful addition to the already fine eateries and entertainment restaurants in the area. The El Tiburon has all the right components and is sure to be a hit.

MESSAGES & WISHES
Hey,
If you'd have asked me two months ago regarding my attachment to Mexico and my new friends in La Peņita this surely would have surprised me...I am so home sick. There's something special about our little corner of the universe I could never have never anticipated.
We are the fortunate.
Mom's in Rehab and will be furloughed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This stroke was far worse than the other two and life will never be the same for me folks. They are tough and will endure. Please forward my holiday greetings to all.
PEACE.
Jim Schrader

We are looking forward to our next clinic on January 15th to 17th in Los Ayala and another following in Lo de Marcos on the 19th to 21st. May you enjoy the season with warm hearts especially knowing how you have helped the animals. Un abrazo grande y Feliz Navidad!

HALAS A HOOT
A wonderful photo of the lovely Hala and her hammocks. I did not bring one back with me for the holidays and cannot find one for under a hundred dollars U.S. They are a great bargain and a greater comfort for relaxing and sleeping. And the colors are enough to cheer anyone. (I am NOT prejudiced in the least!) Hala speaks several languages, and it is a treat to be in her shop and hear, French, English, Spanish, and a smattering of Arabic all within the same hour. I am certain her newest shop will bring many people to La Peņita. Congratulations to her and wishes for a most successful year to come.

Sports
Jaltemba Express Community Golf Challenge starts to steamroll
There is a growing controversy surrounding the latest round of sports Trash Talk served up by Gary Wolf Man Stackhouse who claimed yesterday that his team the Los Venados Stags were going to ¨KICK ASS! One his own team mates has tried to calm down his captains projections. Marcus (the hammer) Horton told the Express ¨Thats just Gary talking.¨
Taking a more conservative approach, Horton told the Express that he believed that his team could do well, but he was not going to let overconfidence become a liability. ¨We will play the best we can, one shot at a time, Horton said.
Meanwhile the La Peņita RV Resort and Spa has a new team and over confidence is not a liability with these four guys. The fearsome foursome of Barry (Ziggy) Schryer, Stan (The Gunner) Binns, Joe (The Tool man) Krajnc, and Uncle Jack (Nicklaus) Krajnc are entering the tournament and challenge anyone to take last place away from them!
They expect to be sponsored by the La Peņita RV Park and hope to have La Peņita RV Park Tee shirts.
In other news surrounding the February 25th Community Challenge Cup taking place at Monteon´s Famed Field of Dreams, pre tournament favorite Team La Peņita is now expected to field at least three teams. La Peņita Captain Charlie Hanshaw will not divulge the make up of those teams, but promised an international flavor, with players from Canada, Mexico, United States and Iraq.

Community Help
Augustine Leon
Express Readers Donate $495! Wonderful Community Support!
Community Support Update
Augustine Leon has been very sick for 20 years. He used to work as a farm laborer and is now supported only by the good graces of his niece. You have probably seen him around town especially if you drive down the beach road in La Peņita. He is not eligible for IMSS medical care because he is not working. He cannot work because of his appearance and health. This is a vicious circle we would like to break.
His face has open sores and he experiences major digestive problems. Until now he has been unable to afford to go to doctors and follow through with specialists. He also does not understand simple procedures such as taking blood for analysis.
George, of the Hotel California fame, has led the cause to raise money to assist Augustine get medical treatment. The Jaltemba Express Readers have generously responded with just under $500 to assist in this effort. We all thank you. The money is well accounted for and George has strict guidelines and collects every receipt. Your money is going directly to medical help and there of course no administration or other charges.
So far Augustine has seen a local doctor and had some tests. A specialist came down from Tepic just to see him and discounted his fee when he heard about the community involvement. The doctor specializes in anti-immune disorders.
Augustine has now been given medication to reduce the sever inflammation on his skin. He will soon go in and get more tests, including biopsies, to help diagnose the problems. It is likely that he has a multiple of problems.
So far 600 pesos have been spent on doctors and medication. We expect the tests and lab work to be pricey.
We are going to do a home assessment soon to ensure that Augustine has clean linens and clothing. This may be an opportunity to clean your closets and ensure that these clothes reach a needy soul. Stay tuned.
Again thank you for your support. We want to additionally thank George, who with a very busy schedule, has made time in his life to drive Augustine to appointments, wait for hours in doctors offices etc. This is not an easy task.

| Pearl Harbor survivor Jack E. Jorgensen, 87, of Olathe, Kan., reminisces Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, during a gathering of veterans, family and friends at the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center in Mission, Kan., marking the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star) |
We Veterans enjoy the most incredible opportunities to participate with other outstanding individuals making up this community. I have never been (like most other Veterans) one to seek out friends, and speaking for most Viet Nam Era Veterans, I know we felt alienated by the non-veterans citizens and co-workers near us when we returned.

So much so, that after that war, it shaped our lives in a way that amounted to self-imposed exile. Being combat Veterans, we would take chances in everything, even small things, like driving a car through a yellow light with a motorcycle cop watching.

Running a risk, daring the consequences... as if it were a game. But as for making friendships, we would act cautious, engaging in friendships as if breaking a trail in the jungles of Viet Nam, and this caution did not enhance our chances of making friends.

Most Veterans take friendship to mean more than most people understand, the Veteran takes friendship as a bond, that bond requires mutual understanding, and mutual protection, even when it is a friend we spend little time with.

So, I would like to take a moment to wish all of the Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay residents a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a heart-felt Thank You from all of the Veterans living in this area. We have found that friendships in Puerto Vallarta and greater Banderas Bay are open and interesting.

Finding non-Veteran friends within the various organizations like the PV Writer's Group, the Navy League, the International Friendship Club, the American Legion, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and many others, is more rewarding and fulfilling than a non-veteran is aware of. We are proud to be with friends like you, SHALOM!

NEW INCREASE FOR PENSION BENEFITS BASED ON DISABILITIES NOT SERVICE-CONNECTED

I have helped many Veterans or their Spouses obtain a Pension for non-service connected benefits. The recent decision by the Veterans Court of Appeals affirms the higher money to be paid to you if you are seriously handicapped.

In the Court decision against the V.A., Veterans may gain income by virtue of having a disability that meets the level of a sixty per cent V.A. disability or by being permanently housebound. (In or around the home 85% of the time.)

In reading the Courts decision below note that the Veteran is disabled for a non-service connected condition not related to military service, but had it been rated it would have received a disability rating of at least 60% , so then a higher rate of pension is payable.

Example using current rates of pay - a Veteran who is single is normally paid around $10,800 per year, under the new decision he may be paid $13,356 per year. A married veteran may go from $14,313 to $16,740 per year, if they meet the standard. (This would also increase payment for medical cost up to level of new pension amount.)

SPECIAL MONTHLY PENSION FOR VETERANS OVER AGE 65

Decision Assessment Document; Hartness v. Nicholson, July 21, 2006, No. 04-0888 United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (Court)

Summary of the facts and Court's reasons: The veteran, born in 1920, served honorably from 1940 to 1945. Current medical evidence documented that the veteran was diagnosed as permanently and legally blind due to macular degeneration of the retina.

On VA examination conducted in April 2003, the veteran was able to dress, feed and bathe himself, ambulate for 100 yards, and mow his own lawn. He reported that he was unable to drive, but would leave home once or twice weekly with the assistance of others to attend church or go to the store.

Subsequently, the RO (Regional Office) granted NSC (Non-service connected) pension based on macular degeneration with a 70 percent disability evaluation SMP (special monthly payment.)

The veteran's claim was remanded, with the Court providing the interpretation of section 1513 that the permanent and total disability requirement in section 1521(e) is excluded for a veteran aged 65 years or older who has a disability rated by VA as at least 60 percent disabling or is considered permanently housebound.

The Board was directed to apply this interpretation in its subsequent decision, which is to include determining whether the veteran is entitled to SMP housebound benefits due to the NSC macular degeneration rated at 70 percent disabling or because he is so substantially confined that he is considered permanently housebound.

Impact on VBA: Claims for SMP shall be awarded where the veteran has the requisite wartime service, is at least 65 years of age and either (1) possesses a minimum disability rating of 60 percent or (2) is considered permanently housebound as defined under 38 U.S.C. § 1502(c).
