Dia de Los Reyes

Today is Dia de Los Reyes and a time for a Mexican Family celebration.Día de los Reyes, Sololá by Antonio C. Ixtamer Museum de Phoenix

This day commemorates the Epiphany - the day the 3 wise men arrived in Bethlehem after following the star, bearing gifts for the Christ child, gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In Mexico children will write to their favorite wise man or Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar, or Baltasar, and ask for the present they would like. In large cities, families go to the zocalo and children have their pictures taken with the Kings of the Orient, In the zocalo they purchase helium balloons and attach their letters addressed to the Kings.

Sometime during the evening figurines of the 3 wise men are added to the beautiful nativity scenes. Children place their shoes under the bed. Traditions vary here. Some families leave hay outside for the animals or cookies and milk inside for the 3 wise men. When the children awake on January 6, they immediately rush to their shoes to find their gifts.

The celebratory evening meal is called the Merienda de Reyes, and celebrates the Epiphany. A sweet bread shaped into a large oval called Rosca de Reyes are decorated with candied fruit. Hidden inside the cake is a small figurine of baby Jesus - symbolizing the hidden birth place Mary and Joseph found away from King Herod. Everyone cuts a piece of the cake and carefully inspects the piece they selected for the figurine. The lucky (or unlucky) person who finds Jesus must host an party on February 2, Candelaria or Candle Mass, and invite everyone to join in.

New Storage Facility for Jaltemba BayGeorge talks over his storage plans with ace editor Dot Bell

George & Loretta are taking reservations for space for 2007 in the new Storage facilities in El Monteon. The fenced area 1 block South of the school is currently undergoing massive changes. A large work crew is moving quickly to provide safe and secure storage for those who want to leave vehicles, boats, RVs and trailers in Paradise when they go back home.

The area, protected from the salt air and high winds, is perfect for storing vehicles and electronic equipment. The large reinforced roof is ready now for vehicles and those that want protection from the summer sun and heavy rains. It is extremely sturdy and high enough to provide good air circulation during the muggy months ahead.

We visited the area last week when the backhoes were clearing the land for the Storage Rooms (bodegas) and the 24 - 7 security house. Bricks were piled high near the entrance ready for construction. George guarantees that they will be ready to go March 1 - a promise that looks like a slam dunk considering their reputation in the community and with the number of workers and equipment on the field. "We'll be ready" he says confidently.

The security for the facility will be second to none.

"We will have 3 layers of security" says George. "Number one, we are installing electric fences." (Currently the property is surrounded by a chain link fence) "Number two - we're having 24 hour security at the gate. Number three, we are having a BIG MEAN DOG on this side of the facility. And we're having his brother on the other side." New faicltiy in great location

The storage rooms - bodegas- are going to be large enough for most storage needs. In fact you can get together with a neighbor or two and share the spacious 5'X10'x10' space. Each of these rooms will be accessible by a locked door. "You will be able to lock them yourself" explains Loretta "and ensure that you stuff stays put."

We were particularly impressed by the flexibility of the owners. "If someone has a special storage need, they should come down and talk to us" say George. "One fella, for example, wants his RV hooked up to electric so his fans can keep the air moving. Well we can take care of that and just charge him a little bit extra to cover our costs. If you need something special, let's see if we can provide it for you. Now's the time."

George and Loretta are committed to providing fair and honest pricing. They guarantee no price increases for at least 5 years. "We here for the long term. We live in this community year round and we want everyone to be happy with our services."

Customers who book for the 2007 Season will receive a 10% DISCOUNT. A GREAT DEAL CONSIDERING THE ALREADY LOW PRICES.

DIA DE LOS REYES

Dear Dot and Bill:
We enjoy receiving your daily paper via email – it keeps us in touch with the area when we can’t be there.

The one photo is of my table centre piece for Dia de los Tres Reyes – we will celebrate with our family on January 6 and the other is of Rosca de Reyes I purchased at a pasteleria in La Peñita the year we were there for this holiday. Saludos,

Bea y Ken Rauch

MASSAGE & MANICURIST

Hello from B.C. We will be in Guayabitos in Jan (23) for a month. I receive the Jaltemba Express and saw the ads for massage and manicures. We will be staying at Cabanas El Capitan and were hoping to book massages/manicures there. Is there an e-mail address for the massage therapist and manicurist? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You R.H.

PS Love the paper. Lets us know what we are missing when we are not there.

Ja'Qui & the Perez Bothers

Can you, or anyone else, tell me where and when Ja'Qui and the Perez Bros. will be performing during January, if they are performing anywhere this year in Guayabitos. Last year, several times we went to see them and really enjoyed their music.

Thanks...Maurice Dufresne and friends.

(Editors Note: We will contact Ja'Qui and let you know.)

Around the Bay - Rob Erickson

For those wanting a different dining and recreation adventure, here's a different way to see Playa Naranjo or Orange Tree Beach.
The simplest way to get to Orange Tree Beach is via the Hwy 200 to km 83, then turn left at the beach signs to drive the 8 km or so to the beach. For those wanting to burn a few calories prior to lunch, count on about 1hr 45 minutes to 2 hrs to walk to Orange Tree Beach from La Peñita.  This is a great beach for small children or those wanting to learn to boogie-board as it is a very shallow beach.
There are a number of restaurants to choose from, all wanting your business. If you plan to stay for lunch and a few drinks, you can expect parking, free toilets and showers included with your lunch bill.
Caly at Los Conos Restaurant(cellular 311 260 1611 or home 322 227 9525) also offers horse back rides to /from La Peñita with lunch included, as well as 3 sodas /beer /water, for 500 pesos.  Or, he will drive a truck load of you back to La Peñita with lunch and drinks included for 300 pesos. He will drive his four wheel drive along the beach to the Pemex at km 92, then along the hwy 200 to La Peñita
RV Park.

‘Twas The Diet After Christmas

’Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I'd never & nbsp; said, "No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt---

I said to myself, as I only can
"You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"
So--away with the last of the sour cream dip,
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
"Till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie--not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore---
But isn't that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

Restaurant Review - the Kitchen Goddess - by Linda Binns

Abel's Restaurant ReviewKitchen Goddess Linda Binns

One of the nicest people in the area also happens to be one of the finest cooks around.  Abel has been cooking in Rincon de Guayabitos for 22 years, 11 of those years at the current site.  His palapa restaurant is located on the Avenue Sol Neuvo beside Bungalows Lupita.  He's open 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

Abel greeted us with a big, warm smile and welcomed us back to Mexico.  This is our first visit since last year but like many of the Mexican people he remembered us and gave us a hearty welcome.  It's always so hard to decide if I want the fresh fish or shrimp, and yesterday the shrimp won.  I ordered shrimp diablo and Stan decided on Burrito Aztecas.  As usual at Abels the seafood is perfectly cooked.  The shrimp were plump, had a bite to them and were sauced with perfect diablo sauce.  The sauce was sweet, sour, and hot.  A wonderful combination of flavors.  My rice was quite good and the refried beans were sinful.  The aromas coming from Stan's plate caught my attention and he shared a bite with me.  His chicken burrito turned out to be several small ones, covered in a very tasty, mellow cheese and cream sauce and was surrounded by a spicy cinnamony flavored red sauce.  An absolutely wonderful blend of flavors and textures.

While we were enjoying our food two gentleman arrived with their catch of the day and asked if Abel would cook the fish and feed fourteen of their friends that evening.  Abel was more than up for the challenge.  Later, I asked him about the fish dinner and he said that he does that occasionally and would be more than happy to talk to anyone who would like to put together a special dinner for their friends.

As we started our meal the local iguana arrived and dined with us.  We kept our eyes on one another as we dined just in case there were any moves on the iguana's part to dart and try and snatch a shrimp. I wasn't sharing my shrimp with man or iguana.

ANIMAL RESCUE

Karen Hofstad from Villas Buena Vida has made a contribution through Paypal of $500.00 Canadian through Paypal in memory of Sam, her beautiful three legged dog who will be put down in a week due to age, illness and kindness on the part of his owners.
Karen has been a huge supporter of our clinic over this past year and I would love know that Sam leaves us with our love and recognition of his life.

IN MEMORY OF SAM

Sam was found at the Juneau Alaska dog shelter...turned in because he is a fence jumper and cat chaser so son, Larry, said great, I will take him.
Sam is a mixture yellow lab and other, the most gentle and intelligent dog ever, we think.  German fell in love with Sam so took him from Petersburg,
Alaska to Guadalajara.  Son Mark missed him so he went to Guadalajara and
brought him back to Alaska.

Mark fishes most of the time so Karen ended up the sitter.

Sam has been an important part of
www.villasbuenavida.com, with many friends that return every year.  He ran in front of a car in Alaska 3 years ago, loosing one leg.  Sam and I just finished a car trip going from west to east and then east to west in the US and Canada for a total of 14,000 miles.
Sam, age 17 will have a memorial garden at Villas Buena Vida, a place he loved.

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!learn spanish

Learn Spanish Today

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
