Judy Kerrigan Art Show at Casa de Los Amigos a Hit

by Diane Engen

Sunday, December 10th, was an absolutely glorious day for Rosalie Hope to host an exhibitionudy Kerrigan Art Show at Casa de Los Amigos a Hit and sale of paintings by San Miguel Artist, Judy Kerrigan, at Casa de Los Amigos in La Peñita de Jaltemba.

Judy, who paints under the name “Ruke”, exhibited 32 of her most recent paintings, her ‘White Churches’ series and ‘Beaches’ series are in “naïve” style and are not only charming, fun and refreshing but very colorful and very Mexican…truly joyful art.  Several of Judy’s paintings were sold and the new owners were extremely happy with their purchases and look forward to displaying them in their own homes.

Light refreshments were served throughout the afternoon to over 100 guests including locals and visitors.  One of Judy’s paintings, “Fin de Semana”, was the raffle prize which was drawn at the close of the exhibition and the happy winner was Jim Chimes from Los Ayala.  Jim, enjoy your prize…Congratulations.

It is still not too late to view Judy’s paintings.  Rosalie Hope has extended an open invitation to anyone who would like to visit Casa de Los Amigos to see Judy’s work.  Judy Kerrigan will remain in La Peñita until December 18th when she will return to her home in San Miguel De Allende where she will continue to paint and exhibit her work..

Thank you Rosalie for opening your home for this special occasion…a grand time was had by all who attended.   Hopefully this event will become an annual affair.

Sayulita Celebrates Our Lady - Week long celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe culminate tonight with a parade, fireworks in the plaza, an all night mass and music into the wee hours.

The Bridge of Life…Needs Your HelpRocky Garcia says its time to make the Bridge of Life more pedestrain friendly bill Bell Photo

One of the gringo community’s greatest gifts to this piece of paradise, the bridge of life between Guayabitos and La Peñita, is in dire need of assistance according to long time resident Rocky Garcia. Built three years ago to assist the local population to travel safely between the two communities (estimates range of on past pedestrian deaths vary on the highway but there were many), the bridge is now attracting the use of motorcycles and horses, much to the detriment of those same pedestrians says Garcia.

¨¨There are people who have no respect for what that bridge is there for…They ride their motorcycles and horses over it scaring mothers with little children,¨ Garcia said.

Rocky thinks he has some answers but has called a meeting for everyone concerned to discuss what needs to be done to keep the bridge safe for pedestrians. "One thing we can do is put up proper barriers, but the community should be involved first,¨ Garcia said.

The meeting will be held this Wednesday December 13th at the Tucan Restaurant starting at 6 p.m.,  If you can not make it call Rocky at 045 322’-278-8163

Tomorrow Visit Huichol Village - A tour to a Huichol village is being organized for December 13. 400 pesos. Includes bus, breakfast at a Tepic Hotel, boat ride across the reservoir to the village.

Getting Away From the OfficeBill and Dorothy Bell left their offices in La Peñita RV Resort yesterday to get a few minutes alone and to have a drink and discuss Christmas plans. They chose Hinde & Jaimes Restaurant for a quick retreat from the hustle and bustle of the very active park. Within their one hour retreat, 14 park residents also seemed to have the same idea.......You can run but you can't hide. Below are some of the La Peñita Rv Park crew who showed up for poker and for some of those world famous fish and camerone tacos

Letters from the Publisher

By Bill Bell

A message from the publisher

I am a cynical person by osmosis.  I don’t think I was born that way but after nearly four decades  in the media covering everything from civil wars to major plane crashes to political conventions both as a journalist and now as a political columnist for a Canadian Newspaper, I tend not to believe anything at first glance.   Add to that, stints as a political spin doctor, politician, lobbyist and advertising executive and you get my drift…I take nothing for granted and always look for ulterior motives.

When I first came down to this little piece of paradise, I heard about the good works of Bob and Vicky Howell, and wrote it off as just another ¨do gooder¨ couple, at best satisfying their own needs to feel good about themselves…at worse siphoning off donations for their own benefit…not too different  than some of those religious  and political leaders that you read about back home.

Of course I was wrong…completely wrong and as I heard and talked to people in this community I found out that Bob and Vicky’s little ¨micro charity¨ really did provide more bang for the donated buck than any of the large charities could ever dream. And just as importantly it was delivered to the right people who needed it most.

Still, after all this time I never got to know Bob very well, meeting him on occasion in Hinde and Jaime´s restaurant.  What I saw was a gruff ex marine.  I  wasn’t all that impressed though some of his stories about the small villages in the mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco  were impressive…I left it at that.

Today though, I am in wonder of Bob’s sense of humanity.  In reflection he and Vicky have done far more by taking small steps towards making this world a better place than many of us who tried jumping rivers only to fail at making a difference..

What made me have this revelation?

Last Spring both Bob and I had serious operations with our intestinal track.  I was lucky and mine was non cancerous…Bob wasn’t so lucky, his was cancerous and now that cancer has spread to his liver.  The diagnosis doesn’t look good, but he still holds out optimism and wrote a letter to all us who read the Jaltemba Bay Folk Board. His letter is stoic and filled with dignity, compassion and most of all hope.

The  following is his letter:

As many of you know I am trying to beat this cancer problem.

At the moment I am in San Diego (VA hospital) and am either about to undergo surgery or return home to Jaltemba Bay.

Surgery or not, they have deemed my cancer to be incurable and the future limited. It seems that it has spread from the colon to the liver.

At this point I refuse to accept this opinion and want to try an alternative treatment, hopefully a cure.

I have read numerous testimonials and claims about these cures. I cannot believe all are scams or untrue, although this is a possibility.

Everything I read is hearsay. Most have something to sell.

My appeal here is to anyone who has had a personal experience, or witnessed, a successful alternative treatment for cancer.

If you can provide me with any information on this I would be very thankful.

Thanks,

Bob Howell

e mail: robertohowell@hotmail.com

I am still the cynic and know that his cancer is very difficult to beat, but Bob proved me wrong before and now all can I do is look forward to and pray that he will prove me wrong again. I wish Bob the best and trust that he beat this .

I know that Bob would like this years Fall Fundraiser to be a tremendous success .  He and Vicky are the fund administrators.  Lets make this Fundraiser the best yet and make Bob and Vicky know that their work for our community is treasured.  See details of Fall Fundraiser below.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Dia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe - Our Lady of Guadalupe Day

by Dorothy Bell  Photography by Bill Bell

We were heading back to Mexico City from Puebla after traveling down the Pacific Coast and circling back through Oaxaca. It was morning and when we reached the mega highway returning to The City and there were already pilgrims on the roads. This was not a new sight for us and we weren’t surprised. Throughout our 2 week trip we had seen many people traveling by car, bike or truck all heading to celebrate the Dia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe at the Basilica in the world’s largest city.

Our Lady’s image is everywhere in Mexico and she would be difficult to miss on a trip to this special country. Now decreed as the Patron Saint of the Americas, Our Lady is seen not only in churches everywhere in Mexico, but on flags calendars, business cards T-shirt and the like. The image of the humble mestiza – Mexican woman - clothed in a green mantle has been both a religious and a national symbol for Mexico and has been used throughout Mexico’s turbulent history as an icon for love and sovereignty.

The Lady, as the accounts go, appeared as an apparition of the Virgin Mary to a peasant named Don Diego on December 12 on a hill in the town of Tepeyac – now a suburb of Mexico City. The brown-skinned Lady spoke in native Nahuatl and told him to convince the Bishop to build a church.

The clerics were indeed sceptical and asked Diego for a miraculous sign that this was indeed the Virgin. Diego was then instructed by the Lady to gather flowers from the hill and present them to the sceptics. Flowers rarely bloom in December but he found roses – Spanish roses at the top of the Hill. He cut them and placed them inside his tilma –an Aztec cloak-like coat.

When Diego appeared before the Bishop, the roses fell from inside his cloak and the image of our Lady of Guadalupe appeared inside the Tilma. The original tilma is now on under glass and display at the Basilica dedicated to the Virgin in Tepeyac. It is here that the millions of pilgrims come on December 12, to worship and honor their very special Saint.

The normally quite boring drive from Puebla to the City was colorful and exciting on this December 11th. The Highway was partially closed to allow the pilgrims to walk, bicycle and at times crawl along the outer lanes towards the hill. Colorful trucks and decorated cars with families and friends were loaded to the brim. Many had huge pictures of Our Lady strapped to their back as they walked or peddled closer. Many were getting the image blessed for their tiny pueblo or church.

Banners bore the names of their towns and flowers decorated the vehicles. We even spotted a few garbage trucks, dumped and cleaned for the occasion, decorated and filled with pilgrims. Many were dressed in their native costume from the various towns and pueblos they called home. As we drove closer to the city, it became very exciting as more and more people joined the march as their tiny roads joined the highway. Now the pilgrims were 5 to ten across and the procession became a massive train of color and sound.

On December 12 we took the jam-packed subway and visited the Basilica. The current Church is not particularly impressive in terms of architecture; it is new and the design more modern than sacredly inspired. Bill and I entered and felt the atmosphere that day was neither religious nor spiritual. It felt more like going to a concert or a play with line-ups for the doors and onto the escalator.

Systematically we plodded through the corridors to the escalators where we stepped aboard one of the three of flat moving sidewalks that quickly moved so that we may get a glimpse of Diego’s’ tilma framed and mounted some 20 feet above. It was less of a spiritual experience than expected. We unloaded from the sidewalk and I wondered “Was that it?”

Yet outside the Basilica and onto the massive plaza between the old and new churches, the experience did not disappoint. Dancers in native costume performed their practiced dances to crowds that appreciated their homage to the Lady. Various troops wearing elaborate feather decorations shelled ornaments or embroidered tunics, played danced and sang. Sometimes only one village performed. Other times a number of chants, songs or drums could be heard from various performers within the plaza. It was an amazing event with color, sounds, motion and pure joy and devotion.

There were no collection plates or propina (tip) jars. Each performing group were playing – no honoring – our Lady that day. They were there to thank the Virgin and were not playing for or to the throng of tourists and pack of television cameras. It was a celebration of Mexicans from throughout the country, celebrating their collective spirituality and sense of belonging in this universe. A most beautiful sight to behold.

(Editors note: We have traveled all 31 states in Mexico and have climbed every major pyramid and explored many sacred cenotes. We have visited every capital and have logged many of the highways going to and from Mexico’s colonial heart. We have written about and photographed Mexico for the last 20 years. Dia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is my most favorite day and I wish that the world could share the experience at the Basilica on the hill of Tepeyac)

Local celebrations of Our Lady Of Guadalupe are mostly religious in nature. The canon-like sounds of fireworks mark the 9 days leading up to December 12 and will end today. Mexicans go to church for mass and celebrate with family. In our Area, Sayulita has a special event tonight including parades and fireworks.

Horseback Riding Tours of the Area
Want to explore the back hills by horseback? Then these are the tours for you. The tours are scheduled on Fridays beginning on November 24 or can be arranged privately for a group.
Everyone meets at (please note this change!) the Pemex in Lo de Marcos.  we then take a drive through the farming country to the Rancho Guadalupe for a wonderful breakfast of Mexican tacos. Make your own fresh tortillas if you want.  We then meet our horse friends for the day and begin the trip.
We have designed both easy and semi difficult trips depending on people's desires.  The easier trips are a combination of farmlands, riverbeds and roads, lots of scenery and plant and animal life. These trips are from 2 to 3 hours long. The more difficult trip consists of roads, farmlands, and trails which lead up and over a ridge and down to the river and waterfalls and pools.  Somewhat arduous in places but if a person is somewhat familiar with horses, it shouldn't be a problem.  It is lengthy however lasting about 2 and a half hours one way to the cascadas and 2 hours for return.
Upon return we are greeted by a traditional Mexican lunch.  Beer and frescas are available for purchase.
The cost of the trips are 300 pesos for the shorter trips and 400 pesos for the long trip. People should wear long pants and socks.  Bring sun block and bug dope,  any kind of snacks for the trail, water, camera and binocs.
Organize your own group at least 2 days in advance - Minimum of 4 people and a Maximum of 8. For questions and reservations contact garydorisstackhouse@hotmail.com
