Oaxaca Rug Artisans Coming to San Pancho – Sunday, December 17, 2006
Due to civil strife artisans are being forced out of Oaxaca to sell their wares.
We have been fortunate enough to meet Raul, a rug artisan from Oaxaca. He belongs to a cooperative of 20 young artisans who are striving to maintain the Zapotec language and ancient dye techniques for rugs which were passed down from their ancestors, using fruit, plants and insects as natural dyes.
Raul has agreed to bring a group of these young artisans from Oaxaca to San Pancho, on Sunday, December 17, 2006. They will demonstrate dying, carding and weaving of the rugs using methods carried down from their ancestors at 11:00 a.m. in the plaza across from the Catholic Church in the town of San Pancho. A wide selection of rugs will be for sale and they will also take orders for custom made rugs. All rugs for sale are beautiful, genuine rugs from Oaxaca.
They will also offer alebriges and blouses they will bring to sell for other artisans.
While some artisans from Oaxaca are now using synthetic dyes this cooperative is dedicated to maintaining the tradition of using natural dyes.
People from throughout the world collect the rugs from Oaxaca.
Please join us in supporting these artisans.

Fundraiser Event Preparations - These are a few of the generous donations from the community. By all means this is not even close to the number of items that have been collected for the Silent Auction and Door Prizes. There are wonderful holiday baskets (Crown Royal anyone), handcrafted items, and gift items.
If you have a special gift to give or something that would work for the fundraiser, please contact George at the Hotel California and arrange when you can deliver.

Click here to see many more of the fine donations
Note: There are no tickets or admission charges. You should bring an ample appetizer (more is better than less), and your heart. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet locals and like-minded folks that contribute to this community. It is a must for residents and vacationers alike .latinogeorge@hotmail.com

Huichol Village Report
by Jean Allen Photgraphy by Melanie Blair and Bill Allen
About 60 winter Jaltemba Bay residents left early December 13, on 2 busses, to travel to the Huichol village upriver from the Aguamilpi Dam. Danny Milski organized the trip and Vincente, the turtle man, was the tour guide on our bus. He gave us lots of info about the crops along the way, and especially about Tepic, his home town. Imagine, Tepic has a skating rink. We saw it, I think. We stopped for a buffet breakfast at Bogan Villas, that's Bogan Billas for the uninitiated. Then we went back on the busses to the dam. We got in the boats (life jackets optional) and went up river to the village.
The climb to the village was worth it. The village seems to be in the process of modernizing, there were trenches every where. The villagers had set up their sale in a palapa, featuring the bead work they are famous for. Many of us bought the jewelry, masks, ornaments and purses. The trip back down the lake was a little rougher. A head wind had come up and the lake was choppy.
Back at the busses, the men found the "perfect woman". A woman was walking along the road selling cold beer. Sales were brisk and she walked back flat empty. Back on the busses and in the park at 6:30.
Vicente said that he and Danny organized the trip with a goal in mind. It was to try to help the villagers to a better Christmas time. We hope we have helped..T o view more great photographs click here

SO MANY RESTAURANTS AND SO LITTLE TIME (or money, or waistline)
We would like to review each and every restaurant in the area but it's impossible. We have to pick and choose. If we don't review your restaurant it's not because we don't want to - we just haven't made it there. Requesting a review doesn't make it happen. We have no schedule, no criteria, it's just happens. Dot, Bill, nor Stan (the Kitchen Goddess's husband) cannot make it happen, so don't ask them to talk to me. Hopefully, we'll stop by and partake of your great food but like I said so many restaurants and so little time.

Restaurant Review
La Avenida
By the Kitchen Goddess - Linda Binns
Last year was our first year in La Peñita and La Avenida was the first restaurant that we ate in. Since that first time we've become one of the regulars.
La Avenida consistently has very good food and reasonable prices. The operative word here is consistently. It's not a hit and miss restaurant. It was good last year and it's good this year.
They are open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Last year I made Chilaquiles my breakfast food after ordering them the first time. They are soft and crunchy with a spicy, full flavored sauce. Cheese and onions are sprinkled over the dish. It's one of those wake up foods. The smoked pork chops are sliced thin and grilled until light brown. They are full of flavor and can be accompanied by eggs fixed many different ways. There are beans and a small salad to round out the breakfast plate.
Today I had carne asada and believe me it won't be the last time I order it. Thin slices of beef are grilled with onion. The carne asada comes with flour tortillas, beans, buttery rice flecked with carrot and poblano pepper, and a small salad of lettuce, shredded carrot and red onion. A lime half comes with the plate to use as salad dressing. Very piquant and fresh tasting.
La Avenida is famous for their fajitas, pozole, and chicken soup. I have had all three and would recommend each dish. The fajitas are smoky and plentiful. The pozole is seasoned just right. The chicken soup is made with a rich broth, rice, and a chicken leg. Every meal has been flavorful and prepared just right. There is a great deal of pride in how food is prepared and presented, and that's appreciated.
The restaurant is located at the end of the Avenida and has parking in front. It's decorated nicely and is open air with a great view down the Avenida. It's one of those places where you can relax and watch the world go by.

Recipes
Here is a recipe I thought you would like for the holidays! Denise and Don
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken or turkey
1 large lemon, cut into halves
sprig of rosemary
salt and pepper to taste
butter or olive oil, whichever you prefer
Heat oven to 350 degrees
Rub butter or oil over the skin of the chicken/turkey until it is completely coated.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and any other seasonings you prefer.
Take a knife and gently separate the skin from the breast meat;
Slide lemon halves under the skin with the peel side up, one on
each side. This way the juice from the lemon will release into the breasts.
Place sprig of rosemary into the chicken/turkey.
Cover and bake for 30-45 minutes. Remove cover and continue
to roast until juices run clear, basting every 15-20 minutes.
If you've followed these steps correctly, your chicken/turkey should
look like the one in the picture.
Bon Appetit!

Horseback Riding Tours of the Area
Want to explore the back hills by horseback? Then these are the tours for you. The tours are scheduled on Fridays beginning on November 24 or can be arranged privately for a group.
Everyone meets at (please note this change!) the Pemex in Lo de Marcos. we then take a drive through the farming country to the Rancho Guadalupe for a wonderful breakfast of Mexican tacos. Make your own fresh tortillas if you want. We then meet our horse friends for the day and begin the trip.
We have designed both easy and semi difficult trips depending on people's desires. The easier trips are a combination of farmlands, riverbeds and roads, lots of scenery and plant and animal life. These trips are from 2 to 3 hours long. The more difficult trip consists of roads, farmlands, and trails which lead up and over a ridge and down to the river and waterfalls and pools. Somewhat arduous in places but if a person is somewhat familiar with horses, it shouldn't be a problem. It is lengthy however lasting about 2 and a half hours one way to the cascadas and 2 hours for return.
Upon return we are greeted by a traditional Mexican lunch. Beer and frescas are available for purchase.
The cost of the trips are 300 pesos for the shorter trips and 400 pesos for the long trip. People should wear long pants and socks. Bring sun block and bug dope, any kind of snacks for the trail, water, camera and binocs.
Organize your own group at least 2 days in advance - Minimum of 4 people and a Maximum of 8. For questions and reservations contact garydorisstackhouse@hotmail.com
