Fundraiser Event Tonight - Please come and be generous
If you are going to just one event all year to help the needy, then tonight is the event to attend.
Hosted by George of the Hotel California fame (across from the Bullring), the event is the main fundraiser supported by residents of this community. The funds raised help many families and individuals in Nayarit - both here and in remote villages nearby. Everything from school and health supplies are distributed to the most needy.
The doors open at 6 and there are door prizes and a silent auction for many lovely items; gift baskets and handcrafted items. We also anticipate an exciting announcement.......
Bring a hefty appetizer and make sure you bring your heart. Vacationers are most welcome - we'd love to meet you.
Many in the community are depending on your generosity.
Redneck Mother Play the Gardens
After you attend the Fundraiser - dine and dance to the tunes of the Redneck Mothers tonight at the Bavarian Gardens. Tonight's special is "Fajitas!"
Oaxaca Rug Artisans Coming to San Pancho Sunday, December 17, 2006
Due to civil strife artisans are being forced out of Oaxaca to sell their wares.
We have been fortunate enough to meet Raul, a rug artisan from Oaxaca. He belongs to a cooperative of 20 young artisans who are striving to maintain the Zapotec language and ancient dye techniques for rugs which were passed down from their ancestors, using fruit, plants and insects as natural dyes.

Raul has agreed to bring a group of these young artisans from Oaxaca to San Pancho, on Sunday, December 17, 2006. They will demonstrate dying, carding and weaving of the rugs using methods carried down from their ancestors at 11:00 a.m. in the plaza across from the Catholic Church in the town of San Pancho. A wide selection of rugs will be for sale and they will also take orders for custom made rugs. All rugs for sale are beautiful, genuine rugs from Oaxaca. They will also offer alebriges and blouses they will bring to sell for other artisans.
While some artisans from Oaxaca are now using synthetic dyes this cooperative is dedicated to maintaining the tradition of using natural dyes.
People from throughout the world collect the rugs from Oaxaca.
Please join us in supporting these artisans.

Tropical Dresses Custom Made Locally
Finally! For all of you ladies that like the Hawaiian dresses that Faye wears you will be happy to know that a dressmaker in town now has a pattern and is willing to make dresses for all/any that want them. Faye is having one made in a white fabric and it will be ready on Monday if anyone wishes to see just how it turned out.
The dressmaker that has the pattern is Lucy's and she is located to the left of highway 200. Instead of turning right at the first light to go down La Avenida, you turn left. Lucy's is located in the first block, on your left hand side to the left of the meat market. It is a very narrow, little shop, so watch that you do not miss it. Lucy herself speaks good English and she said to ask for Faye's pattern. Lucy also said that she is going to get some bright colored fabric in just for these dresses.
Lucy also said that she is not too busy right now so it is a good time to get some sewing done. She has a wonderful selection of dresses, shorts, capris, tops and men's shirts already made up if you choose to buy ready made. Her prices are really quite good. Faye is in site # 72, up by the pool in the La Peņita RV Resort if you want to see what the dress turned out like.

Fundraiser Tonight
Hi Dot & Bill,
It seems that for the most part the volunteer group is ready for the fundraiser tomorrow. Thanx to you and your extensive reach in the area we anticipate we should have a good turn-out. The following is a full overview of the historical background surrounding Bob and Vicky's charity activities. Perhaps you may find you wish to share it with your readers.
Cheers, Jerry
NOTES FROM BOB HOWELL
Well, with my limited memory and thought retention deficiency, I will try and clarify the fundraiser. I think most people know the reason for the fundraiser and have been told where the money goes; however I am sure there are those that don't so I will briefly outline what we do.
Currently the fundraiser silent auction is held at the Hotel California. George Aceves is our host and there are a number of volunteers to help with everything including costs. I understand my famous margaritas will be there. I am sorry I am not able to attend this event in 2006.
If Vicky had her way I would never say anything to anyone about what we do. However, as I explain to her - If we tell others than we will receive more and we can help more people. I do not in any way want people to think we are a couple of do-gooders. We do not look upon what we do as being out of the ordinary. We both have good incomes, we do not want for anything, and therefore, if we have extra time or money we should help those that don't have as much as we do.
This is the fair thing to do.
Who we are: Vicky Flores is a nurse with the Mexican Social Security System, where she has worked for more than 25 years. She and l are partners in Mi Casa es Su Casa Bed and Breakfast. I am from the U.S. I retired from the Marine Corps and was later a businessman. I have lived in Mexico for the past 11 years and locally in Rincon de Guayabitos for over nine years.
How we began: Vicky and I met several years ago. She was always a champion of the poor and treated a lot of folks that could not afford the clinic after hours. I started transporting her around where she was bandaging, giving shots and medication, etc. I noticed the need for food and clothing and first cleaned out my closet and we started buying things. Then Vicky and I started making adventures into the backcountry. We started carrying food, clothing and medication. Then we started taking people for guided tours. Soon people were donating things. People started asking us to rent rooms in my place. Then more people were bringing things and making cash donations.
Anyway, it just kept growing. Now, as a result of a lot of generous people the program has been expanded.
What we do: By we I mean the donors and volunteers as well, for without them our program could not exist. Every time the Magic Jeep leaves for a back road trip it is loaded with clothing, food, medication and sometimes candy and toys for the kids. In addition to the jeep trips we are now visiting 15 communities north south and in the mountains where we distribute many things.
We have added eyeglasses, dental hygiene, school supplies, and school uniforms to our distributions. We were able to assist about 1500 students a few years ago with school supplies, uniforms, and eyeglasses.
We have an annual Christmas party. Usually this has been held in a small poor village. Last year we had about 30 volunteers at a local school in need in La Peņita. We cooked hamburgers and served potato salad, potato chips and soft drinks. We had tables set up for clothing, food packages for the very poor families of the school, a table for medications and another for toys. There was a Santa Claus.
This December 15th 2006 event is our fifth annual fundraiser. We put the money into an account with Bancomer in La Peņita. Most of this money goes for food. We try and buy such items as rice, beans, sugar, and oatmeal in 50-kilo bags when we go to Tepic. We package these into family food packets of about a dozen items. Some of the money goes for school uniforms. Now and then we buy special medications or blood plasma. We buy some toys for the annual Christmas party. All of the proceeds go to the poor. None is spent for overhead.
Thanks for your support!
Vicky & Bob, Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico

THANKS FOR THE J EXPRESS
Thanks for the great News Paper
We were at La Peņita RV park last February for 10 wonderful days. We were hoping to get back in 2007 however work will not allow us enough time. We are looking forward to 2008 when we should be there for 6 weeks. The following year we retire and we hope to be a nuisance for 3 months. I have been reading the express daily through your web site and thought that if you are keeping stats we should let you know.
Keep Up The Great Work

NO THANKS to J EXPRESS
Hey Folks, I really love the newspaper....but, I was just getting used to the grass turning brown, snow and cold, freezing weather, starting to settle into another winter here up north.
When all of a sudden I found my fingers searching out cheap flights to PV.
My fingers, have decided we are going to La Peņita, I have no say in the matter and have been informed by said fingers that my life may not be worth much if we don't go.
They took out the credit card, typed in the airline reservation and even the security code on the card! Just can't trust them fingers these days.
I am protesting and will continue to protest the entire time there, including Hinde Y Jaime's for New years Eve where I plan to intoxicate my fingers into submission.
So, once again, thanks a whole bunch Dorothy and Bill, LOL

Chef, Author, Travel Writer and Photographer
Author/Photographer Team Ann Hazard & Terry Hanswirth to Visit Area
Ann Hazard Author & Travel Writer will be visiting the area with husband / photographer Terry Hanswirth. We will announce a book signing and, if we can convince her, a demonstration of one of her favorite recipes.
Ann, author of the books, Cooking With Baja Magic Dos, Cartwheels in the Sand, Cooking With Baja Magic (almost out of print) and Agave Sunsets, is passionate about all things Mexican. Shes a third generation Baja Aficionada who has followed her father and grandfathers footsteps up and down the worlds longest peninsula since she was nine. She, her sister and parents flew in converted World War II cargo planes, landing on dirt roads in obscure places. The family also took to the roads (dirt, usually) in their camper and stayed at deserted beaches and in lush palm oases where they were the only gringos around.
Since then, Ann has traveled throughout Mexico. While she enjoys the resorts, she has a strong affinity for the Mexican people and a deep abiding appreciation for the country, its history, culture, cuisine and geography. In October 2003 she and Terry sold their homes in the US and Baja norte and relocated to Buena Vista, Baja California Sur (between La Paz and Los Cabos) where they travel, write, shoot photos, swim, snorkel, kayak, play and entertain more houseguests than they could have ever imagined!
ACCOMODATION NEEDED
We are looking for suitable accommodation for Ann, Terry and their 2 dogs. If you know of a casita that would be available, please write to Ann ASAP and include price and availability.
(Ann writes: We want to rent a casita near La Peņita RV Park for the following dates: January 18 to 26, total of 8 nights. We are from Baja California Sur and will have two mellow, middle aged, small and medium-sized dogs with us. Please email Ann Hazard cookbaja@aol.com if you have something that might work for us. Gracias!)
