Jaltemba News & Notes
Fundraiser Event
The Hotel California was packed! The food tables were overflowing. Money was rolling in.
175 and more of Jaltemba Bays most generous souls braved the winter weather for the area's major fundraising event last evening at the Hotel California. In fact it was a record breaker in many different ways.
The auction items were laid out on tables surrounding one side of the pool. Wonderful gift baskets, handcrafted items and thoughtful contributions were donated by members of our community. The food was delicious and plentiful.
A record-breaking grand total of 44,300 pesos was collected at the event which will go to many of the most needed in Nayarit.
The Jaltemba Express gives special Kudos to those who shared so much to make the event a huge success. An event of this size and caliber takes an extraordinary amount of work to plan, organize and deliver. Thank you. Thank you.
We know Jaltemba Bay's residents are great volunteers who give to this community in so many ways. Thank you again.
A very special thank you to George of the Hotel California for hosting the event in his hotel and so bravely donning a thong for $200 (and thereby providing the evenings entertainment) and to Anita and Jerry Ashenbrener for soliciting a whopping 15650 pesos from friends back home for our community.
Of course a very special thanks to Vickie and Bob. Because of your heart and foresight, we have an avenue to give generously.

Redneck Mother Play the Gardens
The Redneck Mothers continue to delight the dancing fools at the Bavarian Gardens. The Mothers have proven to be the one of most popular bands in the area - always drawing a crowd and ready to party.
A crowd from Lo de Marcos showed up in force for dance the night away.

Artistic & Cultural Market - Every Sunday
The First Tienguis- Artistic and Cultural will be held Sundays - December 17th, 24th and 31st in La Peņita beginning at 9:00 a.m. They will continue on all Sundays during the season from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00. p.m. They are located next to the garden of La Peņita in the basketball court. Special events, music, dancing, food and drink. Bathrooms, chairs and tables available..1200 sq. meters of shade. Great place to buy those Christmas gifts. (Thanks to Rincon reporter Nancy Milski)
Tropical Dresses Custom Made Locally
Finally! For all of you ladies that like the Hawaiian dresses that Faye wears you will be happy to know that a dressmaker in town now has a pattern and is willing to make dresses for all/any that want them. Faye is having one made in a white fabric and it will be ready on Monday if anyone wishes to see just how it turned out.
The dressmaker that has the pattern is Lucy's and she is located to the left of highway 200. Instead of turning right at the first light to go down La Avenida, you turn left. Lucy's is located in the first block, on your left hand side to the left of the meat market. It is a very narrow, little shop, so watch that you do not miss it. Lucy herself speaks good English and she said to ask for Faye's pattern. Lucy also said that she is going to get some bright colored fabric in just for these dresses.
Lucy also said that she is not too busy right now so it is a good time to get some sewing done. She has a wonderful selection of dresses, shorts, capris, tops and men's shirts already made up if you choose to buy ready made. Her prices are really quite good. Faye is in site # 72, up by the pool in the La Peņita RV Resort if you want to see what the dress turned out like.
Letters to the Editor
Hi Bill & Dot
Thanx to both of you for helping the Fall Fundraiser committee promote Fridays event. There's no doubt that the coverage of the fundraiser by the 'Express' accounted for many of the 175 who attended.
At the close of bidding, 18,350 pesos had been bid on the donated items. Bar and general donations raised 13,300 pesos and friends of Jerry & Anita's from Calgary and area donated 15,650 pesos, for a grand total of 44,300 pesos.
Tom Novak, Geri de Moss, Sue Moss and Danny can pick up their purchases from George at the Hotel California.
Thanx again for your support.
Cheers, Jerry Ashenbrener

ELEANOR GREETING
Dear Editor,
Thank you so much for sending me the Express! It lets me see what a wonderful time my aunt Eleanor Dickinson is having in her favorite place on earth. I enjoyed La Peņita when I visited 6 years ago as well. Trouble is, I couldn't stay! And I realize how popular my aunt is because her picture is in today's edition twice!!! Hi my Elmo! I know you'll be reading this whether in LP or Texas. Merry Christmas everyone!
Sheila in Knoxville, Tennessee (for now!)
NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS
Hello and Buenos Dias,
I would like to subscribe to your e-newsletter. I found it a few days ago, and after reading a few issues, I feel like a member of the community. We will be spending 4 weeks on the Bay, getting some r'n'r and hopefully visiting some of the surrounding areas.
The Express has provided me with lots of information.... Bill and I are looking forward to meeting some of the wonderful people you feature in person.
See you in February!
Andrea from Canada!
Editor,
Subscribe me. We will be arriving La Peņita on 1/15. Would love to read your stuff.
Paul Schenebeck
Hi Dorothy and Bill
Would like the express. Would like to be put on e-mail. Thank you.

OFFENDED
I appreciate your online newspaper a lot, but I would like to share with you my opinion of your cartoon referring to Mexican feed in a very derogatory manner. I think it's a very offensive cartoon and can't imagine why you find it
appropriate to print it in a newspaper about Mexico.
Thanks,
Andee Carlsson

Palapa Restaurant in Lo de Marcos - by Ken and Mary-Beth Larone larone@tcc.on.ca
Yes, there is hidden treasure in Lo de Marcos! It comes in the form of a charming little palapa restaurant tucked away behind the Tlaquepaque hotel.
The thatched roof, colorful tile floor, and tropical décor combine to create a wonderful Mexican flavor even before the food arrives.
As for the food
the steaming fajitas in lava bowls are a perennial favorite of regulars. However, the Coconut Shrimp, Chilies Rellenos, BBQ ribs, and soups also have gained a loyal following. Prices for main courses range from $45 to $110.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but if you come in the evening its good to arrive before 7 p.m. (If its a quiet night, the restaurant will close early.) Closed Tuesdays.
Take the Lo de Marcus exit off hwy 200. Drive past the plaza and you will see the Tlaquepaque hotel on your right. Turn in at the driveway beside the hotel. Lots of parking is available.

Ms Maneras
Dear Ms Maneras,
I came back home last night from work and on my doorstep were at least 20 wrapped presents with bow. While they smelled a bit rank, I opened the first few gifts and found only dog ....droppings. A note attached said to write you....What gives?
Patrick the Great
Dear Patrick the Great,
Ms Maneras kindly asks you to clean up after your dog or have him leashed. Your neighbors are tired of cleaning up your mess. Little children play in the streets and often don't wear shoes.
GET A GRIP. What gives is that idiots like you give the rest of us dog owners a bad name. Not everyone likes your Fido as much as you do. Even if he is the most loveable dog around, they still don't want to be cleaning up after him. That's your job.
So Bud, get with the program. Take a bag and clean up or put your dog on a leash when you go to work. Either that or don't bitch when you receive ten tons of presents - with bows of course - placed on your doorstep.
Ms M
Dear Ms Maneras,
I disagree with your stance on dogs and leashes. I moved to Mexico to be free from all the senseless laws in the US. Just look around. Mexicans allow their dogs to run around free. When in Rome, do as the Roman's do.
Paul
Dear Paul,
Ms Maneras understands your thoughts regarding useless laws and regulations. She politely suggests, however, you give health and neighbor relations a second thought. NO ONE; repeat NO ONE, likes to step in dog doo. I haven't met a neighbor yet who is happy with picking the mess because the owner is too lazy or inconsiderate to do it himself. If your dog is not leashed of fenced then you better be out with plastic bags daily if you want any respect at all.
Ms Maneras suggests that this is not Rome. Take your manners and healthier habits to the country you visit or adopt. Lead and teach by example.
And by the way, what is your address? I have some gifts for you........
Ms M
Dear Ms Maneras,
I was invited to a fundraising event last night by a very special man. The event took place in his hotel.
While the food was excellent and the crowd divine, I was shocked when the gentleman in question changed into the skimpiest of briefs and with a donkey puppet attached to his private parts. My God! One child was so frightened she ran away in horror.
Shy girl from Nevada
Dear Shy Girl,
Ms Maneras was at the event and saw the gentleman in question. We all saw more of George than we ever expected......However, MS Maneras advice is to put the evening into perspective. George will do almost anything for charity.
My dear first dates are always the most difficult. From the size of it, I suggest you pursue your romance.
You have probably noticed Augustine Leon around
La Peņita, He suffers from an unknown illness and has no funds to seek professional help from a dermatologist. George from the Hotel California is accepting donations and will ensure that the money goes to help Augustine get the medical treatment he needs. If you would like to help please see George or you can make a donation via paypal click the button below

Chef, Author, Travel Writer and Photographer
Author/Photographer Team Ann Hazard & Terry Hanswirth to Visit Area
Ann Hazard Author & Travel Writer will be visiting the area with husband / photographer Terry Hanswirth. We will announce a book signing and, if we can convince her, a demonstration of one of her favorite recipes.
Ann, author of the books, Cooking With Baja Magic Dos, Cartwheels in the Sand, Cooking With Baja Magic (almost out of print) and Agave Sunsets, is passionate about all things Mexican. Shes a third generation Baja Aficionada who has followed her father and grandfathers footsteps up and down the worlds longest peninsula since she was nine. She, her sister and parents flew in converted World War II cargo planes, landing on dirt roads in obscure places. The family also took to the roads (dirt, usually) in their camper and stayed at deserted beaches and in lush palm oases where they were the only gringos around.
Since then, Ann has traveled throughout Mexico. While she enjoys the resorts, she has a strong affinity for the Mexican people and a deep abiding appreciation for the country, its history, culture, cuisine and geography. In October 2003 she and Terry sold their homes in the US and Baja norte and relocated to Buena Vista, Baja California Sur (between La Paz and Los Cabos) where they travel, write, shoot photos, swim, snorkel, kayak, play and entertain more houseguests than they could have ever imagined!
ACCOMODATION NEEDED
We are looking for suitable accommodation for Ann, Terry and their 2 dogs. If you know of a casita that would be available, please write to Ann ASAP and include price and availability.
(Ann writes: We want to rent a casita near La Peņita RV Park for the following dates: January 18 to 26, total of 8 nights. We are from Baja California Sur and will have two mellow, middle aged, small and medium-sized dogs with us. Please email Ann Hazard cookbaja@aol.com if you have something that might work for us. Gracias!)

Horseback Riding Tours of the Area
Want to explore the back hills by horseback? Then these are the tours for you. The tours are scheduled on Fridays beginning on November 24 or can be arranged privately for a group.
Everyone meets at (please note this change!) the Pemex in Lo de Marcos. we then take a drive through the farming country to the Rancho Guadalupe for a wonderful breakfast of Mexican tacos. Make your own fresh tortillas if you want. We then meet our horse friends for the day and begin the trip.
We have designed both easy and semi difficult trips depending on people's desires. The easier trips are a combination of farmlands, riverbeds and roads, lots of scenery and plant and animal life. These trips are from 2 to 3 hours long. The more difficult trip consists of roads, farmlands, and trails which lead up and over a ridge and down to the river and waterfalls and pools. Somewhat arduous in places but if a person is somewhat familiar with horses, it shouldn't be a problem. It is lengthy however lasting about 2 and a half hours one way to the cascadas and 2 hours for return.
Upon return we are greeted by a traditional Mexican lunch. Beer and frescas are available for purchase.
The cost of the trips are 300 pesos for the shorter trips and 400 pesos for the long trip. People should wear long pants and socks. Bring sun block and bug dope, any kind of snacks for the trail, water, camera and binocs.
Organize your own group at least 2 days in advance - Minimum of 4 people and a Maximum of 8. For questions and reservations contact garydorisstackhouse@hotmail.com

Balam Kú
Mayan Ruin Campeche Mexico
Photography by Bill and Dorothy Bell
Near the village of Conhuas, in the Rio Bec area on Federal Highway 186 , a
jungle track leads to an archaeological site with truly exceptional Mayan
reliefs. Recently discovered (1990), the zone was given a name meaning
"Temple of the Jaguar", in reference to the felines characterizing the profuse
decoration on the House of the Four Kings.
Aside from its jaguars, the large frieze is decorated with different
figures -the Kings-, who are shown sitting upon amphibious creatures resting
upon masks. These red, painted stucco reliefs date from the early Classic period
-250 to 600 AD-, and were covered by another pre-Hispanic building which may
possibly have been built after the reliefs had lost their ritual significance
for the local population.
The frieze shows that the dynastic cycle is similar to its solar counterpart,
with the King depicted as a representation of the Sun, and therefore fertility,
emerging from the jaws of the monster of the Earth, just as the sun rises from
the mouth of the Earth.
The house of the Four Kings is located to the north of a square surrounded by
other constructions, one of which serves as an entrance to the site.
