Oaxaca Rug Artisans Today in San Pancho
Due to civil strife artisans are being forced out of Oaxaca to sell their wares. We have been fortunate enough to meet Raul, a rug artisan from Oaxaca. He belongs to a cooperative of 20 young artisans who are striving to maintain the Zapotec language and ancient dye techniques for rugs which were passed down from their ancestors, using fruit, plants and insects as natural dyes.
Raul has agreed to bring a group of these young artisans from Oaxaca to San Pancho, on Sunday, December 17, 2006. They will demonstrate dying, carding and weaving of the rugs using methods carried down from their ancestors at 11:00 a.m. in the plaza across from the Catholic Church in the town of San Pancho. A wide selection of rugs will be for sale and they will also take orders for custom made rugs. All rugs for sale are beautiful, genuine rugs from Oaxaca. They will also offer alebriges and blouses they will bring to sell for other artisans.
Please join us in supporting these artisans.

Jaltemba Bay Express Community Challenge Golf Cup
Jaltemba Bay Express is proud to announce the first ever Community Challenge Golf Cup. Well folks it is in the o rganization stage but already the excitement is beginning to build for the first ever Community Challenge Golf Cup which will pit some of Jaltemba Bay´s best (and worse) against each other in team play.
Golfers in communities from Sayulita to Chacala will be putting together teams for what will prove to be a big showdown this February on the famed golf links of Monteon´s Field of Dreams.
Already teams are being organized and La Peņita has secured such respected golfers as Charlie Stone Hands Henshaw, and Jaime Chipper Horton to lead their team up against the likes of legendary Lo De Marco great Gary Wolfman Stackhouse´s foursome.
¨I'm really excited and I know that this is will be one of the best golf events ever,¨ said Horton. Who already is in the stages of getting sponsorship from his community.
¨A great deal of community pride is at stake.¨
Guayabitos famed hole in one king Big Jim is expected to take a lead role in organizing his communities team, while Captain Poncerelli from Chacala despite his own renowned short putting skills will have a hard time coming up with teammates who will be able to match those who are expected to come forth from San Poncho.
The Trailer Park Boys from La Peņita RV Resort and Spa are currently an unknown factor, but if they can keep Jaltemba Bay Publisher Bill Bell from being on their team may prove to be the big surprise of the Challenge Cup.
Keep tuned for more details.
Christmas Eve Dinner at Hinde & Jaimes
Hinde and Jaimes will be having a Christmas Eve Dinner December 24th. NEW YORK STEAKS. 150 pesos for dinner & 2 drinks. Doors open at 6 pm.

BY GEORGE - He's Got It
Hi Dot,
Loved the newsletter today; George is quite the character, thong and all :) Anyway, having trouble clicking on the web cam. I get that lovely "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" window. Any clues? Thanks in advance.
Theresa Anderson
Editor,
Wow!! Your warning due to sensitive material wasn't enough. Thank goodness I wasn't sipping my hot coffee the moment I opened the newsletter. Advice for George next year: get a tan! And us women want to see some dance moves to music. Possible to raise lots more money for the cause and a new career for George.

I, my wife, and my kids thoroughly enjoy your daily newspaper. It is such a pleasure to see pictures and read of the place where we are hoping to go for at least a visit and perhaps for our retirement.
Unfortunately you put an end to all that today. If I'm going to have to review every day's paper before I allow my kids to see it, I'd rather not receive it. If your plans are to continue this type of vulgarity, then please remove me from your list.
Thanks,
John Cash
Editor,
Saw the photos - It looks like George outdid himself again.
Editor,
Where is the Hotel California? How much money did it cost for the.....show? Does he do private performances?

Ms Maneras needs to know
I don't know how to directly contact Ms. Maneras but this is for Paul from Rome.
Paul you need to remember Rome wasn't built in a day but it was burnt in a night. As for as leashing your
pet, that is your decision but before you make it get the facts
1)There is a disease running rampant in La Peņita with dogs that can be transmitted by licking as one of the
ways.
2)For treatment you have to go to Bucerias once a week for 4 weeks minimum.
3)It is going to cost you a minimum of 2000 pesos not counting gas and time for the chemotherapy.
4)Then because of the side effects of the medicine you have give your dog a special diet (it has to be
prepared in your home) for eight days.
5) I bred my dog to a boxer that run the streets. They had eight beautiful whelps and they were all dead
within 6-8 weeks and my dog had contacted a cancerous tumour.
So Paul from Rome keep your head in the sand and please keep me informed how your pet fairs in this
land of the free with no thought.
Big Ed from La
Peņita

I hate to jump to a conclusion here but it looks like a clear case of acromegaly. Look it up on the internet, rarely seen in US. It's a growth hormone overproduction caused by a tumor in the pituitary. He doesn't need a dermatologist first but an Internal Medicine MD.,.lab work, and a Ct head scan
Editor note: thank you for the advice...thanks to you and other people, we are having several doctors look at the pictures to give their advice as well from the pictures. Wouldn't it be great if this ended up helping Augustine?

Chef, Author, Travel Writer and Photographer
Author/Photographer Team Ann Hazard & Terry Hanswirth to Visit Area
Ann Hazard Author & Travel Writer will be visiting the area with husband / photographer Terry Hanswirth. We will announce a book signing and, if we can convince her, a demonstration of one of her favorite recipes.
Ann, author of the books, Cooking With Baja Magic Dos, Cartwheels in the Sand, Cooking With Baja Magic (almost out of print) and Agave Sunsets, is passionate about all things Mexican. Shes a third generation Baja Aficionada who has followed her father and grandfathers footsteps up and down the worlds longest peninsula since she was nine. She, her sister and parents flew in converted World War II cargo planes, landing on dirt roads in obscure places. The family also took to the roads (dirt, usually) in their camper and stayed at deserted beaches and in lush palm oases where they were the only gringos around.
Since then, Ann has traveled throughout Mexico. While she enjoys the resorts, she has a strong affinity for the Mexican people and a deep abiding appreciation for the country, its history, culture, cuisine and geography. In October 2003 she and Terry sold their homes in the US and Baja norte and relocated to Buena Vista, Baja California Sur (between La Paz and Los Cabos) where they travel, write, shoot photos, swim, snorkel, kayak, play and entertain more houseguests than they could have ever imagined!
ACCOMODATION NEEDED
We are looking for suitable accommodation for Ann, Terry and their 2 dogs. If you know of a casita that would be available, please write to Ann ASAP and include price and availability.
(Ann writes: We want to rent a casita near La Peņita RV Park for the following dates: January 18 to 26, total of 8 nights. We are from Baja California Sur and will have two mellow, middle aged, small and medium-sized dogs with us. Please email Ann Hazard cookbaja@aol.com if you have something that might work for us. Gracias!)

Horseback Riding Tours of the Area
Want to explore the back hills by horseback? Then these are the tours for you. The tours are scheduled on Fridays beginning on November 24 or can be arranged privately for a group.
Everyone meets at (please note this change!) the Pemex in Lo de Marcos. we then take a drive through the farming country to the Rancho Guadalupe for a wonderful breakfast of Mexican tacos. Make your own fresh tortillas if you want. We then meet our horse friends for the day and begin the trip.
We have designed both easy and semi difficult trips depending on people's desires. The easier trips are a combination of farmlands, riverbeds and roads, lots of scenery and plant and animal life. These trips are from 2 to 3 hours long. The more difficult trip consists of roads, farmlands, and trails which lead up and over a ridge and down to the river and waterfalls and pools. Somewhat arduous in places but if a person is somewhat familiar with horses, it shouldn't be a problem. It is lengthy however lasting about 2 and a half hours one way to the cascadas and 2 hours for return.
Upon return we are greeted by a traditional Mexican lunch. Beer and frescas are available for purchase.
The cost of the trips are 300 pesos for the shorter trips and 400 pesos for the long trip. People should wear long pants and socks. Bring sun block and bug dope, any kind of snacks for the trail, water, camera and binocs.
Organize your own group at least 2 days in advance - Minimum of 4 people and a Maximum of 8. For questions and reservations contact garydorisstackhouse@hotmail.com

Balam Kú
Mayan Ruin Campeche Mexico
Photography by Bill and Dorothy Bell
Near the village of Conhuas, in the Rio Bec area on Federal Highway 186 , a
jungle track leads to an archaeological site with truly exceptional Mayan
reliefs. Recently discovered (1990), the zone was given a name meaning
"Temple of the Jaguar", in reference to the felines characterizing the profuse
decoration on the House of the Four Kings.
Aside from its jaguars, the large frieze is decorated with different
figures -the Kings-, who are shown sitting upon amphibious creatures resting
upon masks. These red, painted stucco reliefs date from the early Classic period
-250 to 600 AD-, and were covered by another pre-Hispanic building which may
possibly have been built after the reliefs had lost their ritual significance
for the local population.
The frieze shows that the dynastic cycle is similar to its solar counterpart,
with the King depicted as a representation of the Sun, and therefore fertility,
emerging from the jaws of the monster of the Earth, just as the sun rises from
the mouth of the Earth.
The house of the Four Kings is located to the north of a square surrounded by
other constructions, one of which serves as an entrance to the site.

What is Diabetes, Anyway?
David Lord - PVNN

|
| An overweight woman walks on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. The global diabetes epidemic is projected to affect 7 percent of the world's adult population by 2025 as developing countries embrace bad health habits associated with affluence. (Reuters/Sergio Moraes) |
The information below has been taken from an article yet to be published in the Purple Heart Magazine in 2007, but with the visitation of many to Puerto Vallarta over the Holidays, I wanted you to be aware of Diabetes.

Many are entitled to disability compensation by the fact of military service in or off the coast of South Vietnam. This disease is on the Presumptive List, meaning you do not have to prove it was a service connected disease, it is presumed to be a result of your military service.

What is Diabetes, anyway?

As the American Heritage Dictionary describes Diabetes, it is:

A severe, chronic form of Diabetes caused by insufficient production of insulin and resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The disease, which typically appears in childhood or adolescence, is characterized by increased sugar levels in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, frequent urination, acidosis, and wasting. Also called insulin-dependent Diabetes, or Type 1 Diabetes.

A mild form of Diabetes that typically appears first in adulthood and is exacerbated by obesity and an inactive lifestyle. This disease often has no symptoms, is usually diagnosed by tests that indicate glucose intolerance, and is treated with changes in diet and an exercise regimen. Also called non-insulin-dependent Diabetes, or Type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes is a problem that affects many veterans. Every veteran who served in Vietnam is considered at risk of adult-onset Diabetes, also called Type 2 Diabetes, because of exposure to Agent Orange.

Type 2 Diabetes, or adult-onset Diabetes is caused when the body can not properly use the insulin that is produced, insulin resistance. The great majority of American with Diabetes have Type 2. Several new studies claim Diabetes can lead to Alzheimer's syndrome.

The symptoms of Diabetes are related to high blood glucose levels, and they include:

Excessive urination, thirst and hunger, unexplained weight loss, increased susceptibility to infections, especially to yeast or fungal infections of the skin, toenails and vagina.

Many people who will eventually develop full-blown Diabetes have a condition knows as Pre-Diabetes. The are at least fifty million American with Pre-Diabetes, which is why it is important to have blood sugar levels tested on a regular basis.

The are about 15 million Americans who have been diagnosed with Diabetes.

Also, there are at least another 5 or 6 million who have Diabetes, but just don't know it yet, which is why your blood sugar levels should be checked with every physical examination, or at least once every year.

What is probably the best test to check on possible Diabetes is the hemoglobin A1C test. The hemoglobin in your red blood cells carries the blood glucose for four months, and the A1C test can therefore determine your average blood sugar level for the prior two or three months. The results of the A1C are reported as a percentage of the RBCs carrying glucose. Your A1C should be no more than 7%.

Agent Orange exposure is a definite cause of Type 2 Diabetes.

A report from the VA states: "Approximately 20 million gallons of herbicides were used in Vietnam between 1962 and 1971 to remove unwanted plant life and leaves which otherwise provided cover for enemy forces during the Vietnam Conflict."

Shortly following their military service in Vietnam, some veterans reported a variety of health problems and concerns which some of them attributed to exposure to Agent Orange or other herbicides.

A Harvard review of many studies concluded that the sugar in soda pop is a major factor in increasing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. A single 12 ounce can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar.

Merely drinking one can of sugary soda every day can add as much as 15 pounds to one's weight over a one-year period. And the sugar in the sugary drinks reduces the blood's ability to carry the oxygen your body needs.

More than half the patients with Diabetes develop high blood pressure which can cause additional problems, such as poor blood circulation, heart disease, kidney problems, and even the eye disease know as diabetic retinopathy which can cause vision problems and even eventual blindness.

Other problems such as peripheral neuropathy (a form of nerve failure) often occur is later stages of Diabetes, also fungal foot infections that can even lead to amputation.
