Hotels Planned for La Peņita

The Mexican government announced yesterday that they have given formal approval to two new massive hotels to be built along the waterfront of La Peņita Nayarit along with a 28 hole golf course planned to be built near the La Peņita RV Park.
Mayan Resorts and Hyatt have teamed up with FONATUR (Mexico’s Tourist Board) to construct the two 3,000 room hotels, the largest ever undertaken by the hotel chains. Construction is scheduled to start by April 1 of 2007 and will also include time shares, seven swimming pools, four waterfalls, nine restaurants, Starbucks, and a small food mall with a McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Sushi Bar.
The Hotels will be the tallest built on the coast with one tower reaching 54 stories. Employment of time share salesmen alone is estimated at over 400. The golf course will be designed by Jack Nicklaus and although construction will not begin immediately, it is scheduled to be open by 2008. Initial designs show the course utilizing the La Peņita Trailer Park and crossing the Highway near Mangos Cantina.
FONATUR spokesman Manuel Lopez Garcia was on hand along with Nayarit State officials to make the announcement to a small group of businesses in La Peņita last night at the Avenida Restaurant. ¨This is part of the ongoing development promised to the area for past 20 years…the new president of Mexico Philip Calderon wanted to make this a priority to kick start the local economy,¨ Garcia said.

International Artist's Festival in San Pancho Begins Today

The Collective San Pancho" is a group of local and international artists who live in San Francisco.  They have pulled together to create the first annual three day art festival to enhance tradition, culture and consciousness  through art, music, performances, Huichol Indian Art workshops, culinary, photography and jewelry.  Festival will be held in La Plaza Del Sol (across from the church).  Festival begins on Dec 28 at 5:00 p.m. with a parade from park to plaza, followed by opening ceremony and ending with music by The Frijoleros.

On Friday, December 29 workshops begin at 12 noon, ending with music at 9:00 p.m. by Los Rojos.  Saturday, December 30 begins at 12 noon with workshops and ending at 10 p.m. with Grand Finale (Instruments of the World).

The artisans from Oaxaca have also been asked to participate.

Los Ayala & Lo de Marco Spay & Neuter Clinic Needs Assistance

In order to reach as many areas as possible, our next clinic will begin on January 15th through to the 17th of January in Los Ayala with a follow-up clinic in Los de Marcos from January 19th to the 22nd. The clinic in Los Ayala has 5 Canadian volunteers flying down to help out (two vets and three technical assistants) while the clinic in Lo de Marcos will have two vets from the Hagganback Foundation in Mexico City arriving to help us.

We are in need of accommodation for two vets, three technical assistants (all female) and one husband! If you have space, it would so help us out! Also, we will need help with food during the clinic. All the volunteers so enjoyed the lunches dropped off at the last clinic...it is amazing how hungry one gets during those busy days and the angels who arrived with our delicious lunches, homemade cookies and refreshments were so appreciated!

On a second exciting note, Melanie Blair has offered her energy, time and equipment to help Dr. Eladio Tello , our vet in La Peņita begin an animal grooming business. Why is this important? Well, many of our street animals are filthy, matted, covered in fleas and ticks which cause terrible skin diseases. By cleaning up some of these animals, we can help the overall health of our animal community. Our thought is that Eladio could charge 100 pesos for grooming animals brought in by their owners with an additional donation of 50 pesos or more which would go toward grooming street animals. This is so reasonable as I pay 250 pesos to get our small dog groomed and I have to make a trip to Bucerias! Our animal rescue fund is helping to support this venture by sharing the cost of the new equipment including professional shears, scissors, dryer and other necessary supplies. The photos attached show our first day working with Eladio to teach him grooming techniques. Melanie will continue to donate one day per week to work with Eladio and our street animals at his home/business in La Peņita.

If you are in the area, please consider volunteering your time! Have a very Happy and New Year!

In summary, we need~

  1. Accommodation for volunteer vets as assistants

  2. Volunteers to help with lunches and refreshments during the clinic

  3. Volunteers to help with the clinic

  4. Donations

Many thanks to those of you who have donated! And a special thanks to Deb and Rick Martin and Heather and Rob Erickson who dropped off catheters, stethoscopes and other medical supplies. Thanks so much, Lin

Magical Mystery Tour Slated for Friday

The Magical Mystery Tour led by Val & Chris - will meet this Friday Morning at 8 am at Hinde and Jaimes. Cars and trucks leave at 8:30. The adventure will lead to a spectacular 100 ft waterfall in the jungle dropping down into a swim able lagoon. Those interested should pack for a shared lunch and bring lots of beverages. No Wimps. No Whiners.

Dia de Santo Inocentes Today

The day of the innocents is celebrated in Mexico and Latin America today. Originally celebrated to commemorate the day of the male children killed by King Herod, the day now has morphed into a similar custom as "April Fools Day." Expect practical jokes. Wikipedia says "The mass media make jokes or distort their content in such a way that the information seems real...It is tradition that the newspapers publish whole pages of the humorous news...that seem serious and deceive the reader off guard."

Kohunlich Quitana Roo Mexico Mayan Masks

Photography by Bill Bell

Kohunlich comes the name "Cohune Ridge". Cohune is a species of fruiting palm common to the area.

The site is best known for its Temple of the Masks, an Early Classic pyramid whose central stairway is flanked by huge humanized stucco masks. Built around 500 A.D., this is one of the oldest constructions at the site. After 700 A.D., this temple was covered over with a Terminal Classic construction, this protected the masks and allowed for the masks to remain in excellent shape with some of the original colors.
