Letters to the Editor
Hello Dot,
We have realized that we are neglecting to let as many people as
possible, that the fundraiser will be bring your own Heavy
H'orderves. Anyone interested in coming to the gathering is asked to
please bring a little plate of something: Finger food, ceviches,
cheeses, crackers, fruit tray, or whatever they think they would
like to bring..... it only needs to be one dish.
I hope you are planning to be there too Dot! And thank you again for
helping us get the word out, we are very grateful.
Gretchen
Hey Bill and family,
Didn't know how else to contact you so I used this link. Really enjoy
your newspaper, makes me home sick. Just wanted to let you know, I am
one of those stuck in the Midwest with snow up to my...well, you know.
It took me 4 hours just to clear the drive yesterday. Four hours I could
have been drinking beer and eating shrimp tacos at Jaime's y Hindes.
Well, maybe soon. Once again thanks for the great on-line publication and enjoy the warmth of La Penita. Yours,
George Bowers

Thank you for sending this newspaper. Don't know how I got on the list,
but I'm enjoying it! Interesting, great pictures, and restaurant
reviews. We'll be trying out some of these restaurants.

Editor,
Thank you for sending this to me and most of all for all the
work. We eagerly await it's arrival as we look out at freezing
temps and a snow covered landscape. We will brave the Chicago
traffic today to attend a choral program. This is the year we get
to spend Christmas with the grandkids. Next year they will be with
us in Guayabitos. I love all the photos. It helps us feel
connected.

Shava - Shrimp Sales
Shava is one of the many street vendor selling shrimp.
You can find him and others almost daily selling shrimp from icy coolers on
corners of the Avendita. He is usually by Lupita's coffee shop.

Mexico City - Economical Travel from Our Bay
Part One - Getting There and Accommodation
Even the thought of driving to Mexico City
brings quivers to drivers knees. With roughly the population of Canada
or all of California, Mexico City is somewhat daunting for even the most
experienced drivers. Not only are the roads crowded, but the signs are
confusing and the drivers....well really...it's a jungle out there. Cars
and trucks swerve in and out of the sometimes 16 lane highways, at
record breaking speed.
Additionally there are the police and "mordita";
the bribe or literally "little bite " that just keeps getting bigger
over the years. You are not allowed to drive in Mexico on certain days
of the week - depending on your license plate number - and even if one
tire crosses the imaginary boundary into the city, there are at least 2
levels of police that will pull you over and tell you "Senor, You have a
problem today." Ditto with streetlights and other signs that Mexican
licensed vehicles seem to zip on through.
Driving in DF is not for the timid. It
requires full concentration, a good city map and a ton of courage. In
other words it is not a leisurely drive, rather it is a lot of work.
This year, Bill and I decided to take the bus for our annual retreat to
Mexico City. We were surprised at the cost - 700 pesos 1 way per person
for the Premier Plus - first class bus. A bargain considering tolls and
fuel would have been at least that amount. An additional benefit is that
you do not have to park you vehicle. Secured parking, a necessity in
Mexico City, can cost 300 pesos or more per day. Often parking costs
exceed hotel costs.
We bought our tickets in advance and
selected our seat preference. The depot is on Highway 200 driving
northbound just before the Avendita lights in La Peņita. When we arrived
at departure time, our bags were tagged and we were given a bagged snack
and beverages for the trip. The driver loaded our luggage and assisted
passengers aboard.
The seats were well padded. They had lots of
leg room and reclined into a semi-horizontal position. The washrooms
were tucked away into a room in the back of the buss. The room was clean
and had a hot water machine for coffee, sink and toilet.
During the 11-12 hour journey we stopped
only once as the driver had a break. Passengers watched two movies -
English with Spanish subtitles - or slept through the night. We zoomed
around the normally congested cities of Guadalajara and Queretaro and
made it to our destination, the North Terminal on time. We purchased
tickets in the terminal for a secure taxi to our hotel - 75 pesos.
Taxis
Taxis are everywhere in Mexico City but
unfortunately there have been many incidents of robbery. Be very careful
when you hire a cab. Get your hotel to book a secure taxi, or if at the
airport or bus depot, buy a ticket in the terminal. Ensure that taxi's
that you flag on the street have an L as the lead number on thier
licence plate, and that the driver carries documents with a picture to
indicate he is accredited.
Hotel
We stay at the Hotel/Hostel Virreyes. It is
a 2- 3 Star hotel depending on the room you get. It is located in the
Historico Centro Zone about 6-8 blocks from the main zocalo, cathedral,
central archological site and Government Buildings. It has clean rooms
for 250 - 300 pesos and is undergoing a slow remodeling process that is
upgrading the hostel rooms into suites. Our room has tick clean linen, a
soft bed that doesn't sag, large white tiled washroom and hig walk-in
closet. Our daughter lives here and many young latios from throughout
the world make the Virreyes thier home as they try thier luck and talent
in the Big City. The lobby is large and often on weekends, a hotel dance
or party is arranged complete with music and dancing. It is a hotel for
the young and young at heart. We have always been made welcome.

Golf Report
Sunday, December 3, 2006, was another record setting day at the Campo de
Ensueno. The team of Pauline Gow, Charlie Hanshaw and Gary Stackhouse,
had a record 4 birdies in a row and a total 8 under par, another record,
for
eighteen holes.
Granted it was a three person team, however the extra shot was only used
on 2 of the holes. It was truely a miracle on the greens, with everyone
making birdies and wondering when the bubble would burst. It didn't! We
predict this record will stand for a long long time. No Pictures
of this historical event but congratualtions to the record setters.

begin the trip.
We have designed both easy and semi difficult trips depending on people's desires. The easier trips are a combination of farmlands, riverbeds and roads, lots of scenery and plant and animal life. These trips are from 2 to 3 hours long. The more difficult trip consists of roads, farmlands, and trails which lead up and over a ridge and down to the river and waterfalls and pools. Somewhat arduous in places but if a person is somewhat familiar with horses, it shouldn't be a problem. It is lengthy however lasting about 2 and a half hours one way to the cascadas and 2 hours for return. Upon return we are greeted by a traditional Mexican lunch. Beer and frescas are available for purchase. The cost of the trips are 300 pesos for the shorter trips and 400 pesos for the long trip. People should wear long pants and socks. Bring sun block and bug dope, any kind of snacks for the trail, water, camera and binocs. Organize your own group at least 2 days in advance - Minimum of 4 people and a Maximum of 8.
