DON'T SPRAY PESTICIDES

(Notice by Jeff Bitkoff & David Thompson)

The state of Nayarit has just started (today) releasing a very small non biting wasp (avispa) that is the natural predator of the conchilla rosada. Conchilla rosada is the white stuff on your hibiscus and other plants. Inside the white is the little pink insect that is the conchilla rosada.

C.S. has now spread to the food crops (yeah our food and Mexico feeds a large part of the US and Canada). The check point was moved from the north side of the Ameca Bridge at PV to north of Las Varas by the Pemex to stop the spread.

No matter what the chemical salesman says or your gardener there is NO Pesticide for the Conchilla Rosada. The Insecticides kill the Avispa or wasp.

PLEASE no insecticide use outside for at least a week to establish the avispas (wasps). We have so many hibiscuses in our area they were forced to seed with the wasps sooner than this spring as was intended.

PLEASE NO OUTSIDE INSECTICIDE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK

Feb. 22-25: 7th Annual San Pancho Music Fest:

This event offers a bi-cultural  showcase of volunteer musical talent. It is a "happening," not a totally planned and scheduled event. There is no entry charge and nothing is sold. All musicians are welcome; everyone else is invited to come and listen and enjoy the festival. Musicians need an audience, and an audience needs someone on stage - spread the word. Maps of San Pancho's restaurants are available, or bring your own sandwiches, beverages and chairs.

Music/Practice Schedule:

Tues-Fri: Open stage during the day for sound checks, jamming and scheduled musicians.

Thurs. Feb. 22: 7pm-The Redneck Mothers

Fri. Feb. 23: pm-Frida's Eyebrow, a talented group of local musicians led by Dana and Bob "Q" of San Pancho

Sat. Feb. 24: 2-10pm-live music, some planned but most are walk-ons; 4pm-Kindergarten of San Pancho

Sun. Feb. 25: 12-2pm-Spiritual music; 2-10pm-live music, some planned and some walk-ons; 4pm-Kindergarten of San Pancho; 8:30pm-Gallo & Friends will close the festival.

BILL’S PHOTOS

Hola Bill
I would really like if you could send me the pictures you took last night at the Bavarian gardens and at the pool hall in La Peñita.  I'm the girl that you talk to at the pool hall from Ottawa. The picture of me with the singer Roberto. The other one is the one with the 4 friends (one man and 3 girls.)
Also the one of my friend Yvonne that you took of her alone. I downloaded them from the journal but the resolution is not that good so if possible forward them to me, and I will pass them around.
Thanks a lot.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS

This is John from the Villanueva Trailer Park. Please enter my subscription to your fine publication.

Also, regarding the letter to the editor regarding a Family emergency for "Mr. & Mrs. Wittgen (from Canada)", the first names would be very helpful as many people only know folks by their first names. Also the area of Canada they are from and most importantly, their dog's name if they have one.

John

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES

The reason I sent this note and picture was that I thought you may want to put it in today's paper. I don't know about La Peñita, but here in Los Ayala the burning smell was oppressive. This morning the town was blanketed with smoke, as indicated in the picture I sent. The smell suggested burning of a LOT of plastic, and we were wondering if it was coming from the garbage dump. If so, such actions certainly do not encourage tourism or leave a very good impression of our community.

RESTAURANT REVIEWKitchen Goddess Linda Binns

By Lindy Binns

VICTOR IS BACK........and Esmeralda’s by Victor has risen again.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 5:00 p.m. To 9:00 p.m.

Last year we discovered Esmeralda’s on the beach the day before we left to go back to the states.  The food was memorable and I followed the trials and tribulations of Victor's family and business through out the year.  This season I was thrilled when I found out that he was searching for a restaurant site and would be open as soon as one was found.  Esmeralda’s opened last night at Km. 94 between La Peñita and Guayabitos, next to a cocos stand and a pizza restaurant.  The new restaurant is bright and clean and has an open kitchen. You can watch Victor and his family make magic.  The man knows his way around a kitchen.  Victor was dressed in his whites, as any chef should be and he had his children helping him. He was instructing his children on food preparation and was the consummate professional.  It is a first class operation in a room no bigger than some of our living rooms, alongside the highway and stuck between two other businesses.

I drug Stan and four of friends to the opening and everyone raved about the food.  No one wanted to go to a restaurant on opening night, but I felt that I wanted to pay homage to a fine chef, and he didn't disappoint.  The special of the evening was Vichyssoise, seared Dorado with tomatillo salsa, black bean salad, rice, and baked pineapple with coconut sauce.  The vichyssoise was chilled just enough and was creamy and smooth.  The Dorado was seared on the grill and cooked to perfection.  Not overcooked or undercooked, just firm and flaky and full of flavor.  The tomatillo sauce was moderately hot.  It was sweet and sour and a perfect salsa to accompany fish.  The black bean salad was loaded with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and spices and was very good.  Desert was a warm pineapple ring with coconut sauce.  The pineapple was warm and had a little bite to it and the sauce was sweet and flecked with coconut.  One of our friends had the surf and turf and raved about the steak.  Victor came to our table and told us that his beef supplier never made it to La Peñita and he was hoping that her steak wouldn't be tough.  After watching Sheila eat for a few minutes we knew the steak wasn't tough and the mumblings around bites of steak told us that it was darn good.  The steak and turf was served with a baked potatoes (a real baked potato) and black bean salad.

There are specials each day and I was thrilled to see that my favorite, stuffed lobster with seafood and arbol chili sauce and three cheeses was on the menu for Sunday, along with chocolate mousse.  If you need me Sunday evening, you'll know where to find me.

ANIMAL RESCUE

We have several dogs and puppies that are up for adoption and cute as a button.  The latest were found in Guayabitos; two of which the mother dog has adopted as her own after Tosia and Dave found in a bag that was left at their front gate.  A big thanks to Leanne who is fostering mom and all the pups.  The dogs have been treated for fleas and ticks.  Attached are pics of the puppies.

Bones - a beautiful and gentle medium sized female dog still needs a permanent home.  Jane had to give Bones up due to allergies.  She has lots of energy and loves attention.  Bones would make a great pet for anyone.   Sarah Walker is currently fostering Bone and can be contacted via email at walkersj_03@hotmail.com.

Negrita - Anne in Lo de Marco has been caring and training this medium sized dog since the first clinic in November.  Anne says Negrita is an excellent little dog, a total cuddler who tries at every opportunity to hop onto the bed to snooze. She is athletic and energetic when running on the beach and great on a leash.  She is almost crate and potty trained.  Anne thinks Negrita is about 4 years old.  A very pretty and loving dog.  If you are interested in adopting Negrita contact Anne at anniegreen@prodigy.net.mx

People can also email me at jmrienhardt@yahoo.com if interested in adopting an animal.  The process to transport pets across the border is very easy.

Success stories:  Nancy Milski reports Break and Enter, two puppies adopted at the last Los Ayala Clinic, are fat and happy.  Celia of La Colonia, has gone above and beyond by caring for many, many homeless dogs and cats from the January Los Ayala clinic.  Celia found homes for all. :)

Thanks to everyone who has supported our efforts in the past by volunteering, making donations, fostering, and supplying pet and people food.  This is a never ending project and donations are always needed.  Frontline for both cats and dogs is expensive in Mexico and only lasts one month for each animal.  Dog and cat food donations will assist foster parents.  Storage tubs would be a big help so supplies, equipment and paperwork can be stored separately for each department of the clinic; check-in, pre-op, operating, and recovery.  Clinic set up and storage would be simplified for everyone.

Again, thanks to everyone for their continued support.

HUMOR

NEVER LIE TO YOUR MOTHER– Submitted by Jeanie Rienhardt

Scott invited his mother over for dinner. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but keep noticing how beautiful his roommate, Stephanie, was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between Scott and Stephanie, and this had only made her more curious.

Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between them than met the eye.

Reading his mom's thoughts, Scott volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you Stephanie and I are just roommates."

About a week later, Stephanie came to Scott saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle; You don't suppose she took it, do you?"

Scott said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll send her an e-mail just to be sure."
So he sat down and wrote:

Dear Mom:
I'm not saying that you "did" take the gravy ladle from the house, I'm not saying that you "did not" take the gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.....
Love,
Scott

Several days later, Scott received an email back from his mother that read:

Dear Son:
I'm not saying that you "do" sleep with Stephanie, I'm not saying that you "do not" sleep with Stephanie. But the fact remains that if Stephanie was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now...
Love,
Mom
