LO DE MARCO’S FILM FESTIVAL A SUCCESS – by Jim Schrader

The Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue Spay & Neuter Clinic Fundraiser/Film fest in Lo de Marcos was a huge success...thanks to everyone-!! "Man Friday", filmed mere yards from where everyone sat, starring Peter O Toole and Richard Roundtree was shown at Restaurant Las Minitas before a packed crowd of ninety patrons

The atmosphere was amazing...big crowd, big screen, big sound system and pounding surf in the background...too cool!! While the final numbers aren't in at press time...approximately $4,550 pesos was raised. Thanks again for a great turnout !!

EXPRESS CHANGES – Real Estate Section and Spanish Ads

Express Publisher Bill Bell announced new changes for the Express format today. “Due to public demand and interest, The Jaltemba Express is starting a new Real Estate Section in the virtual paper that will allow for more descriptions and pictures. We are also moving towards making all ads available in both Spanish and English.” Click here to view real estate section

The Union Representative, MS Maneras praised this move as a step in the right direction. Citing problems with delivery of the Express, she said that now finally thing may improve since “the paperboys in the area are virtually all Spanish speakers.”

“Maybe now,” she continues “management will wake up and smell the Bugambillias and get a decent grasp on the Spanish language themselves.”

SUPERBOWL PARTY – Hinde & Jaime’s ANNEX

Plans have been approved by the boss” says Jaimes. “We’re going to have a Huge Superbowl Party in the Annex.”

Hinde and Jaimes will be hosting their Annual Superbowl Party once again this year at their new location. The H & J Annex is located 20 feet from their front door and gives the expected crowd lots of room…

There will be a BIG SCREEN TV so everyone can view the game. Mexican Entertainment will be provided by Roberto Curiel – a wonderful vocalist from Guadalajara who belts out Mexican Favorites.

JALTEMBA BAY ART GALLERY Reaches Second Level

The Jaltemba Bay Art Gallery is currently undergoing massive renovations. Workers yesterday were mum on final plans but it was obvious to the reporter that the plans were being kicked up a notch. Cement and brick are now being hoisted to the second level of the gallery.

Gallery Owners, Eduardo Domínguez and Roberto Gil de Montes (The Jaltemba Express Arts Beat Editor), have been planning the gallery for some time and recently purchased the home just a skip and jump off the plaza to the West of Soley’s Restaurant. The house has been gutted and workers can be seen daily making changes to the building.

“We’re hitting the big times” says Hala of Maya Hammocks. “La Peñita’s getting a gallery.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

RESTAURANT PROBLEM
Hi Dot and Bill,
You guys are doing a fantastic job and I think that you should leave it as it is.....for the most part a "good news" paper. Sure there are always bad things that happen in paradise such as that poor woman with breast cancer, but I don't think you should include such trivial things like someone who didn't like they way they were treated at a restaurant. We all have our ideas about how things should be and sometimes our expectations are just unrealistic. Thanks again for the wonderful Express!
John and Marilyn Sehn
Stouffville, Ontario, Canada.

Dear Dot and Bill.
As restaurant owners, Sam and I feel that it is incorrect that a restaurant be deleted from your publication because of an unexpected hectic night, god knows it happens to ALL of us.
While our staff is punctual and always informs us of days off in advance or by calling in, this is not the norm in Mexico. We agree with you, that good staff is VERY hard to find. and therefore on occasion service will not be up to standard.. This in no way reflects on the restaurant.
On the other hand we also feel that the writer is entitled to his/her opinion, right or wrong... Please give the said restaurant another chance, sometimes, the service is a temporary fluke and will be corrected before you visit again...
It happens to all of us.
Kathy and Sam Litwin
LA MESA LOCA, Rincon de Guayabitos

Just wanted to send a quick note on the individual who was in disagreement with your restaurant review.
This is our first year to La Peñita, and it is great to have a newspaper that helps us out with upcoming events, where to go for RV needs, personal needs, and restaurants. You have been a great help for us newbies. As to your upset reader, we have a few thoughts:
--don't read the newspaper, unsubscribe
--what happens if we disagree with his thoughts?
--maybe this person wants to volunteer equal time in the production of this newspaper as you people do!
This is a great newspaper and has lots of great news for all of us. Keep up the good work.
Bob and Charlotte Gillespie

Dot /Bill:
You are performing a service to the community by spreading the word on all community issues and businesses. If a business fails to live up to someone's expectations, that is not your fault. You are only doing what you do best in providing options. If the business continues to fail to satisfy, the general marketplace will take care of them.
To the person who has put you in this quandary.
IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT, DON'T GO THERE and tell your friends.
Rick Harris

I agree with most of your response to the issue of poor service at a restaurant. However, as a former newspaper editor and publisher for 17 years, I would edit the letter for libel and poor taste (no pun intended) and just leave it at a sentence about the writer's dissatisfaction with the poor service. Nor would I ban advertising or the editorial content about the restaurant. After all, I think Mexico is also a country with free speech.

Guayabitos

Dear Editor;
Hats off to you for your letter regarding the gentleman who had restaurant complaints. I for one get so tired of people complaining about everything in this wonderful area where we are the guests. Yes, we occasionally get less than adequate service at a restaurant or the food is occasionally cold or not exactly what we expected but it's only a meal! You are going to eat again in only a few more hours anyway. Get over it, get a life and get on with what's really important. We have so many wonderful experiences in this charming area we now call home and have been welcomed with open arms by all. We enjoy your daily news and your positive attitudes toward one and all. Keep up the good work!
Kathy Olivas
Rincon de Guayabitos

The Jaltemba Express shouldn't, in my opinion, become a depository for anyone's complaints, problems or dirty laundry unless it is of a serious enough nature that the whole community is affected ie: health and safety.
The Express has been performing a community service like no other in the area. Why would you even consider lowering your standards and allow someone, anyone, to vent their frustrations to your readership when it's possible that the complainant was just having a bad day themselves.

PHOTOS PLEASE

WOULD THE REAL LINDA GIBBS PLEASE STAND UP
Hi: Another friend suggested the same name. I sent an e-mail to the other Linda Gibbs this morning. My name is Linda Marquez Gibbs and am known in San Pancho by Americans as Linda Gibbs and to the locals as Linda Marquez. My husband is Wayne Gibbs and his family is originally from Georgia and now all reside in Florida. We moved to San Pancho from Boise, Idaho where my family lives.

Thank you for putting Linda M. Gibbs on the cancer article.  I sure hope someone knows group or organization that can help.  Feel I need to help this woman somehow.   When she talks to me she tries so hard not to cry.

Hope someday to meet you and your husband.  You do a wonderful job with the Jaltemba Express.  Most of my family now subscribes.

Linda M Gibbs – from San Pancho

Hi Dot

Thanks for clearing up the mystery of the two Linda’s!!  What a small world.  Now we’ll have to meet each other someday. Thanks again

AD COSTS

Hello Dorothy, can you tell me does it cost anything to advertise a beach lot
for sale in Rincon?  Can you help us with that and how do we start?
Wilma and Don

(EDITORS NOTE: The Ads are free. You must write an ad and include all the particulars, price, size, title, view, contact info etc. Include a photo or two. We are asking that all ads be translated into Spanish. If you have problems getting a friend to translate, we will be making some recommendations in the future. Stay tuned.

EARLY RISERS, PUPPIES & CHAT

Hola Dot,

You get up early too. When I wrote that I had already been up over an hour!! Just an early bird. Also, thanks so much for publishing the puppy pictures for me.  Most of the dogs have found good homes but, unfortunately, two that were left were being taken care of on a temporary basis and the person in charge didn't watch them close enough and they got away. We have scoured the neighborhood but have not found them. I personally think some kids took them and are hiding them, but quien sabe?  Thanks again. I have given everyone I know the news about the J.Express and most of my guests are now either signed up or are signing up.  The paper is just excellent and we are all so fortunate to have it.  It makes it easy to keep track of everything and to be "involved."  You two are MIRACLE WORKERS!!!

 Saludos, Rosalie

P.S. Haven't forgotten about the trip I took to San Sebastian, plus photos, but have not had time to write anything. When it slows down I will do so as I think folks would enjoy the experience of going there.

CHANGES AND COMMUNICATION

One of my many ongoing resolutions is to learn to speak, read and write Spanish well. Like many, I have become lazy and haven’t regularly attended classes. After all, I rationalize, I have been getting by on Spanglish for nearly 20 years. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Without a good understanding of Spanish, I can’t adequately discuss anything of import with my Spanish Speaking neighbors. Sure I can order a beer, request a grocery item and get by. But I am missing so much more.

I don’t want to restrict my social circle and want to include more Mexicans in my life. So with that in mind, Bill and I are going to attempt to make the Express Classified Ads Bi-lingual. Yup we are going to request that all ads be submitted in Spanish and English. We will make those changes and then work on a different category…maybe Dining Out or Calendar. We want to bring the English and Spanish speaking communities closer and what better way than letting each other know what is going on and who is selling what.

Be patient with us if the English or Spanish is a bit rocky. We will attempt to get better as time goes on. Watch for future editions for inexpensive translators to help serve you.

Now if we could only find a volunteer translator to work free at 4 in the morning to translate the rest of the paper each morning…..

NEGATIVE RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE

Thank you for those who wrote or took the time to comment on our dilemma regarding a reader’s negative experience at a restaurant. After talking to the gentleman in concern, we have come to a very reasonable conclusion.
We think he should calmly write or contact the restaurant and explain what happened. We are, after all, adults in this world.

The Express will continue to list restaurants and include their menus etc online. We are responsible for listing, printing reviews from our band of critics and are not responsible for one or two glitches or bad hair days that restaurants or their clients may be experiencing.
Thanks to all who added their 2 pesos worth
.

Entertainment Review

Singer Roberto Curiel

Singer Roberto Curiel belted out Mexican favorites at Hinde and Jaimes last evening to a small crowd of mostly Mexican patrons. Too Bad. Roberto Curiel provided solid entertainment value for the evening and amazed and delighted the audience with his tunes.

Jaltemba Express Editor Dorothy Bell was on location for the début performance and was thrilled that “a musician of this calibre is playing in La Peñita in such a small venue. We have traveled throughout Mexico and can honestly say that a performer of Roberto Curiel’s stature is usually playing in Guadalajara or Mexico City in a much larger venue.”

Curiel promised to give notice to the Express when he will play again in our community. (He will be on hand at the Superbowl Party Sunday February 4th) He is a NOT TO BE MISSED entertainer that you will always remember.

Flag Day - February 24

This day honors the Mexican Flag.

The Mexican flag is one of the most beautiful and well recognized flags in the world. It has both interesting symbolic meanings and rich evolutionary history.

The Flags Symbols

The 3 colors represent:

Green - Hope and Victory

White – Purity of Ideals

Red – Blood of the National Heroes

These colors were adopted after securing independence from Spain during the War of Independence.

The Coat of Arms Symbols

The eagle clutching a serpent in its talons is derived from the Aztec legend that told the wandering nomadic tribe to settle and create a city when they found an eagle and serpent. They settled with other tribes in the community called Tenochtitlan (known now as Mexico City) in the Valley of Mexico in the now drained Lake Texcoco. While many places have been named as the place of origin for the Aztec tribe, the most common belief is that they began their quest from Mexicaltitan Nayarit, an island town on a lake just north of San Blas.

Note that the eagle sits atop a prickly pear cactus on an island in the lake.

Flag Protocol

When the flag is presented at a ceremony or parade:

•           Those in Military unform salute as per their regulations – generally a standard military salute

•           Civilians give "El saludo civil a la Bandera Nacional" - and must stand at attention, raise their arm and place their right hand over their heart (The palm of the hand is facing down)

•           The President, when acting in the capacity as head of the Armed Forces, gives a military salute.

•           The flag is flown at Full Mast for certain holidays and Half Mast on Anniversaries of the death of specific Mexican heroes.
