Phone Lines Down In Jaltemba Bay – Telmex Unavailable for Comment
Phone lines were down in areas of the Jaltemba Bay yesterday halting both voice and internet communication. Reporters at the Jaltemba Express called Telmex but the phone didn’t work. They emailed but the email didn’t work either.
ANIMAL RESCUE – Spay & Neuter Clinic
Our second Spay and Neuter clinic was finished to today in Los Ayala! We had 74 animals brought to us in the three days. Sixteen cats and forty-two dogs were spayed or neutered. Sixteen animals were not done due to time constrictions or concern about animal safety. In addition, there were 18 consultations with the vets on a variety of health issues and FOURTEEN animals were adopted which was just amazing!!!
We sadly lost four dogs during recovery which was tragic for us all, especially our very competent vets. Our vets did an autopsy on the last dog to help us understand the cause. We have two probably causes..one highly likely cause is these animals were infected with Ehrlichia which is a tick borne disease (similar to Lyme's disease) which prevents the blood from coagulating. These animals were infested with ticks and fleas and were bleeding more than normal under surgery and during recovery. The possible second cause was there was evidence of rat poison in these animals. Wharfen (rat poison) causes an animal to slowly bleed to death. All were animals who lived in the street where rat poison is put out for rodents. Our vets have taken samples back to the U.S. for further analysis.
A HUGE thanks to Stephanie Garlichs (DVM), Renee Bourque (DVM) and our technical assistants Linda Fauthe, Diane Johnson and Amberly Amero who flew here at their own expense from Canada and the U.S. to donate their time and expertise to help animals in our area. There were fabulous! We hope they will return to help us out another time!!
Thanks so much to Nancy Milski and friends for bringing a delicious lunch which was enjoyed immensely by all of us and to Barb Fosmire and Shirley Vinyard and friends for the sumptuous home baking. We were all very spoiled today by these kind people!
Thank you also to Nancy Milski, Mona, Brenda Bitkoff and Nina Steffens for offering accommodation to our visiting medical team and bringing them each morning to the clinic. Thanks also to George (Hotel California) for lending us a microwave which we so needed.
Kudos to Bill and Dorothy Bell for giving us such thorough coverage daily in their Jaltemba Express and to Carole Thacker for her incredible fund raising as well as help with running an animal taxi.
Our clinic would not have been possible without the help of Susan and Herb MacDonald who again lent us their property to hold the clinic. With its tranquility, space, shade, fenced yard, operating space, water and electricity, it was first rate! Thank you, again, Susan and Herb!!!
And last but not least, my heartfelt thanks to those who donated so generously and especially to those volunteers who tirelessly worked long hours to help spay and neuter these animals.
All of these people (many not mentioned!) are truly dedicated members or friends of our community and deserve a special round of applause. This spay and neuter clinic would not be possible without ALL of you! You ALL made it happen! Thank you.
