JALTEMBA NEWS & NOTES

Market Day Today

Great day to pick up gifts, fruits and veggies, shrimp and everything you could imagine for 10 pesos. And while you are there…..why not buy a ticket to…..

4th MARGARITA CHALLENGE 2007

I, (Sue Moss) will be at Soley's Restaurant, courtesy of Daniel,  from 9:00am until close today, Thursday Jan 25th.   I will have tickets for sale and be ever so happy to take those silent auction items off your hands.  So while perusing our wonderful market please be thinking about what might bring a few bucks to the cause....or bring something creative you may have in mind.   I will be passing out flyers to those willing to post them in areas unassigned by Tom P and also to distribute at Tiangues.

For those that do not know me I will be wearing a black polo shirt with the Hacienda del Mar logo in bright yellow.  And probably pretty wired on cappuccinos...

Another way to help is to go out to eat at your favorite restaurants and ask if they are willing to donate a dinner for 2 or 4.  Email me at shmoss@mac.com and I will take it from there.  All I need is a yes and a dollar value. There is no need for them to worry about actual certificates.  I will create them and I will confirm all offers before submission to the silent auction.

We will submit a listing of all donors of money, items, and auction winners in the Express after the event.

This is such a generous community and much is asked of you.  This challenge is a hoot!   Buy a ticket and join the fun even if you are not in a position to donate this time around.

Thank you Jaltemba Bay! - Sue Moss (MC Chair 2007)   274-2540  shmoss@mac.com

This past Sunday was everything that we’ve come to accept as being the norm for a Bottom Feeders show - and then some. You can read all about it on our web site - www.bottomfeedersmexico.com - and see the pictures.

While on the web site, be sure to check the latest news on our upcoming auction. Get your pen in hand right now and mark Sunday, February 11, 2007 on your calendar - this year’s auction is definitely not to be missed.

MEDICAL & FIRE PROTECTION – Diane Bell

The E.M.S. "Protection Civil" has been here 1 year. During this time they have served this community and surrounding area with Medical and Fire protection. This summer there were many fires. The Dump in Guayabitos was a concern as the fire was off and on for approximately 1 month. After many hours and many firemen from Protection Civil here and in Tepic, the fire was put out with the aide of chemicals.

The fields and hills seem to have had daily fires which had to be put under control, and the Island was also a hot sport. There were also a few house fires which wiped out 3 families of their possessions.

The beach is also another problem as many people do not seem to realize that the ocean is a dangerous place. One problem is that everyone seems to think they can swim when the currents are strong. Drinking and swimming is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. (The E.M.S average 60 calls per month – many of them are due to highway accidents.) There were 2 drownings in the last month and a few near misses. Please use common sense and caution. There seems to be a lack of life guards on the beach which is the control of Tourism and County Authorities.

In the last year we have received 3 Adult and 1 child’s wheel chairs, numerous crutches, walkers and canes. The local people and tourists use these items on a free loan bases and can be located at the office at the entrance to Guayabitos.

In the last 3 weeks beer has been sold at the Plaza on Saturday nights at the free stage show put on by the Tourist Department. The money goes to the E.M.S in hopes of collecting enough money for a defibulator and other much needed equipment for the ambulance and  paramedics to aide them in their work. To date there is over 12,000. pesos collected - 1/4 of what is needed.

Thank you to ALL that have helped in obtaining the money through personal donations and contributions at the Plaza. This is on every Saturday night @ 8 p.m. until Feb 10

Also a BIG thanks to DR.ALEX who comes and donates his time to the E.M.S in the evenings and can be found working at the hospital in San Poncho during the days. REMEMBER THE EMERGENCY #274-2992

LOST DOG FOUND -A Big Thank You!
I want to thank everyone who helped look for our lost dog tonight. As David and I walked the beach and nearly every street in Guayabitos desperately looking for our dog, so many people offered to help look for her... the police, our neighbors, people walking the beach, those heading to dinner... many who we had never met before and will likely not see again. It was amazing. We want to thank each and every one of you so very much! We are truly grateful for your help and concern.
I thought some of you might be interested to know that we adopted Tequila one month ago. She had been brought down from the US, but while here, her owners decided that they didn't want to keep her. She was living on the street until a caring couple in La Peñita took her in. She was thin and dirty, but she had happy eyes and a warm disposition. She clearly needed to be loved and a good home.
Anyway, after three very long hours of searching on foot earlier tonight, Tequila the Dog is home safe, bathed and sleeping soundly, as a puppy should be. A sincere thank you!

MEXICO MEDICAL CARE
Dear Jaltemba Express Editor:
I would like to be subscribed to the Jaltemba Express. I find your almost daily to be very informative and funny at times. My husband and I have a place in paradise, on the road to El Tonino. When not there, we live in Las Vegas, and your paper keeps us in touch with the happenings in the area, and we get to see and hear about friends.
I will also like to chime in about the medical care in Mexico. My husband's health had deteriorated tremendously due to misdiagnosis and errors by medical professionals in Las Vegas. He was being treated as a type 2 diabetic when he wasn't diabetic. He was diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer and went to our little place in paradise basically, to die in peace. While there, his intestine perforated and he underwent emergency surgery. We discovered he did not have cancer, but diverticulitis in the small intestine. The surgeons removed the affected section and he recuperated fully. He was then 80 years old. This was 2 years ago. The Hospital de la Loma, run by catholic nuns in Tepic, although modest, was immaculate. The nurses were kind and very professional, always willing to tend and care for him. I was allowed to stay with him at all times. The doctors were competent and kind, staying on top of his progress and visiting him twice per day, taking time to apprise me of his progress, never rushed. They are now our closest friends and keep in touch with us, and visit us frequently when we are there.
Our experience with the medical system in Mexico was outstanding. Regrettably, I can not say the same for the medical attention we received here in the States. The total bill for surgery, hospital, therapists, laboratory tests and much more was only $17,000.00. We were gladly reimbursed in full by our insurance. Not long ago, after three days in a local hospital our insurance was billed over $33,000.00 in laboratory, scans, sonograms and other tests, for what appeared to be a bout of indigestion. The total bill neared $50,000.00. The nurses were more preoccupied with a labor dispute, and we complained about the cleanliness of the room but were told to wait for the next shift. It was only when I threatened to call the Health Department, that they paid attention to us. I could go on, but you get the idea.
I am extremely lucky and grateful to the Doctors, Hospital and nurses in Mexico. My husband is alive and well and we look forward to returning to our little Ranch in Mexico soon.

TACO STAND SITTING

I just read today’s issue, and wanted to tell you about a taco stand across from the airport in PV, under the pedestrian walk-way. It’s called the El Marlin.
My buddy Miguel from Posada del Sol in Rincon has been raving about them for years. Well a few weeks ago my wife and a couple of our amigos had the pleasure to do so. We all had the shrimp tacos (more like a Canadian style burrito). They are huge with about 15 large shrimp & cheese with onion, lettuce, tomato and some sauces. Big enough to feed two and by far the best taco I have had in Mexico.
I then tried the Marlin and it was equally as tasty. So if you have time while in PV, check them out.

HAMMOCK HOLDER ENVY

Dear Editor,
I have had a case of "Hammock Holder Envy" for two days now. Could you please ask Rick Timmons to divulge the name and address of the person who manufactured his beautiful holder? Thanks,
Mitchell Schilling
Hi,
Could you identify what the final batch of photos is in your paper today? Then people all dressed up in costumes, etc.,,,, what event is this, and where and when? Thanks
Linda
(EDITORS NOTE: There are actually 2 batches of photos – both are from past Carnivals. The first batch is from Las Varas. The second batch is of a carnival parade in Mazatlan. This year carnival season starts around the 15th of February. The date differs annually as it is tied to the Christian Calendar; Easter, lent etc.)

Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue

Just a reminder that we have 4 beautiful tabby kittens, two puppies up for adoption (all with Leanne) and one small black lab (Anne in Lo de Marcos).
Also some little children brought Celia, Chihuahua puppies. If anyone is interested, these puppies can be seen in Colonia at the north end where the collectivos stand by. Celia's number is 274-2991 (her English is very limited) or contact Lacy at nordicmarine@starband.net or by phone at 274 0102.
Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue will support vaccinations, rabies, and general health care with any adopted animal. Now the two clinics have ended, but we have other initiatives we wish to begin. The two volunteer vets from Canada and the U.S. both commented on
the poor condition of our animals arriving at our clinic; many covered in fleas and ticks which leads to terrible skin problems, mange and Ehrlichia (similar to Lymes' Disease). It is challenging to spay or neuter on animals in poor health.
One plan is to go to areas of most need, beginning with the Colonia just outside La Peñita and vaccinate and put Frontline or Advantage (flea and tick medication) on animals there, hopefully with the help of our vet, Dr. Eladio Tello. This service would be free for the people there (although donations are always gratefully received~!) This would help us improve the overall health of these animals for surgery.
This venture would also involve education. We want to go the people who most need it, have children involved and discuss the needs of animals. We are also hoping to develop some educational materials around caring giving to animals for the teachers in the schools.
Our vet, Eladio, will continue to help street animals, animals of our clinics and adopted animals. Vaccinations, rabies and flea and tick medication will be provided free of charge for these animals with the support of Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue. If anyone coming down could bring us some flea or tick medication (Frontline or Advantage) that would be fabulous! It is expensive here.
I will be away until the end of February. Jeannie Reinhardt will look after all the communications for Jaltemba Animal Rescue along with support from many of our dedicated volunteers. Her email is jmrienhardt@yahoo.com and her phone number is US - 303794-3382 Thank you Jeannie and everyone helping her out~! Thanks for your help, Lin
