PEO Winter Luncheon

PEO Winter Luncheon planned for all visiting PEO members.  Meet Wednesday, January 31, 11:30 a.m, at Pina Loca Restaurant in Rincon de Guayabitos.  For more info, email Jan at jimandjanuhler@yahoo.com

Los Amigos de La Peñita

Jan. 23 Meeting was held at Hotel California at 4:00 PM. Next Meeting on Jan. 30, Tuesday at 4:00 PM at Hotel California

Water Committee report: Martha, Eddie and Mark went to Compostela on Monday to present our letter and 188 signatures to Marco Antonio Moreno Vengas, Municipal President of Compostela.  After a brief meeting, Marco invited us back on Wednesday for a private meeting to discuss the issues contained in the letter.  For a report on this meeting with Marco, attend our next meeting on Jan. 30 at 4:00 PM at Hotel California.
George (Calif. Hotel) explained that Jorge Rubio from SIAPA will give amnesty to all unpaid past due accounts.  It is necessary for the unpaid accounts to individually make the request for amnesty when they pay their 2007 water/sewer fee.
Bob Gibbs produced a pamphlet in English and Spanish that explains the purpose of Los Amigos so it will be easier to introduce ourselves to the Mexican residents of La Peñita and encourage their participation in our organization.  This pamphlet will also be posted at various locations throughout La Peñita so all residents will become familiar with our organization and know the time and place of our meetings.
Each person at the meeting was asked to donate 50 pesos to establish a fund for miscellaneous expenses-- $850.00 Pesos were collected.  So far, all expenses have been donated to our organization but as we grow, we will need a contingency fund for expenses.
It was decided to hold meetings on the second and forth Tuesday of every month but until we have dealt with all issues, we will continue to meet on a weekly basis.
Agenda for the Jan. 30 meeting:   1. Water Committee report on meeting with Marco. 2. Additional committees will be formed for Security, for Garbage and for Fund Raising.  3.  How to effectively deal with the Security Issue in La Peñita for residents and business.
Mark and Eddie will not be able to attend this meeting so George and Karen will conduct this meeting.

4th MARGARITA CHALLENGE 2007

I, (Sue Moss) will be at Soley's Restaurant, courtesy of Daniel,  from 9:00am until close today, Thursday Jan 25th.   I will have tickets for sale and be ever so happy to take those silent auction items off your hands.  So while perusing our wonderful market please be thinking about what might bring a few bucks to the cause....or bring something creative you may have in mind.   I will be passing out flyers to those willing to post them in areas unassigned by Tom P and also to distribute at Tiangues.

For those that do not know me I will be wearing a black polo shirt with the Hacienda del Mar logo in bright yellow.  And probably pretty wired on cappuccinos...

Another way to help is to go out to eat at your favorite restaurants and ask if they are willing to donate a dinner for 2 or 4.  Email me at shmoss@mac.com and I will take it from there.  All I need is a yes and a dollar value. There is no need for them to worry about actual certificates.  I will create them and I will confirm all offers before submission to the silent auction.

We will submit a listing of all donors of money, items, and auction winners in the Express after the event.

This is such a generous community and much is asked of you.  This challenge is a hoot!   Buy a ticket and join the fun even if you are not in a position to donate this time around.

Thank you Jaltemba Bay! - Sue Moss (MC Chair 2007)   274-2540  shmoss@mac.com

This past Sunday was everything that we’ve come to accept as being the norm for a Bottom Feeders show - and then some. You can read all about it on our web site - www.bottomfeedersmexico.com - and see the pictures.

While on the web site, be sure to check the latest news on our upcoming auction. Get your pen in hand right now and mark Sunday, February 11, 2007 on your calendar - this year’s auction is definitely not to be missed.

MEDICAL & FIRE PROTECTION – Diane Bell

The E.M.S. "Protection Civil" has been here 1 year. During this time they have served this community and surrounding area with Medical and Fire protection. This summer there were many fires. The Dump in Guayabitos was a concern as the fire was off and on for approximately 1 month. After many hours and many firemen from Protection Civil here and in Tepic, the fire was put out with the aide of chemicals.

The fields and hills seem to have had daily fires which had to be put under control, and the Island was also a hot sport. There were also a few house fires which wiped out 3 families of their possessions.

The beach is also another problem as many people do not seem to realize that the ocean is a dangerous place. One problem is that everyone seems to think they can swim when the currents are strong. Drinking and swimming is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. (The E.M.S average 60 calls per month – many of them are due to highway accidents.) There were 2 drownings in the last month and a few near misses. Please use common sense and caution. There seems to be a lack of life guards on the beach which is the control of Tourism and County Authorities.

In the last year we have received 3 Adult and 1 child’s wheel chairs, numerous crutches, walkers and canes. The local people and tourists use these items on a free loan bases and can be located at the office at the entrance to Guayabitos.

In the last 3 weeks beer has been sold at the Plaza on Saturday nights at the free stage show put on by the Tourist Department. The money goes to the E.M.S in hopes of collecting enough money for a defibulator and other much needed equipment for the ambulance and  paramedics to aide them in their work. To date there is over 12,000. pesos collected - 1/4 of what is needed.

Thank you to ALL that have helped in obtaining the money through personal donations and contributions at the Plaza. This is on every Saturday night @ 8 p.m. until Feb 10

Also a BIG thanks to DR.ALEX who comes and donates his time to the E.M.S in the evenings and can be found working at the hospital in San Poncho during the days. REMEMBER THE EMERGENCY #274-2992

ATTENTION ALL BEACH WALKERS ... PLEASE HELP CLEAN UP THE TRASH!

It's impossible to miss the large amount of trash that recent storms have deposited upon this area's shores. Yesterday I walked the length of the beach at Guayabitos and complained the whole way about the proliferation of trash, particularly non-biodegradable plastics. There are signs along this beach in Spanish that basically tell the people that, "This beach is your children's heritage. Please maintain its cleanliness."

Today I walked the beach at La Colonia and took along 2 grocery bags. I filled them both to the brim and didn't begin to put a dent in the mess. There are also lots of decomposing sea creatures, but I figure nature will take care of them. They're mostly past the stink stage anyway.

SO, PLEASE HELP!
Whether you're a visitor to this paradise, or a resident, there are so many of us out there who walk the beach daily. Please bring along a trash bag or two and pick up the trash. It will help immeasurably, and it will hopefully prove inspirational to others as well!

TOAST TO LIN CHIMES

Dear Editor

As I was surfing through all the wonderful pics I have taken here in Jaltemba Bay, I came across this picture of Lin Chimes and thought what a wonderful, caring and beautiful woman. Her continued time and effort is unmatched in her dedication to the well being of the animals here among us. For those of us who have had the wonderful opportunity to know her and work beside her, I'm sure you agree with me. Her husband Jim has also given his time, dedication and support working side by side with Lin. Together and with the amazing dedication of everyone involved in the successful Spay and Neuter Clinics, a desperate need has turned into to a common goal. Thank You Lin and Jim, and thank you to all the wonderful people who have given so generously of there time, needed supplies and contributions. Without you this could not have happened. Dreams do come true.

Thank you!
Just a reminder that if anyone is coming down and wanting to donate...flea and tick medication (frontline and advantage which is expensive here is really appreciated!), kennels (you can pack stuff inside!) and donations for vaccinating our animals in need as well as donations of dog/cat food to feed the street animals (food for animals must be purchased in Mexico as customs will not allow it through the states unless it is a U.S. product).

HUMOR – Submitted by Marilyn Sehn,

A Career Search Story

My first job was working in an Orange Juice Factory, but I got canned because I couldn't concentrate.
Then I worked in the woods as a Lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe.
After that, I tried to be a Tailor, but I just wasn't suited for that sew-sew job.
Next, I tried working in a Muffler Factory, but that was too exhausting.
Then, I tried to be a Chef - figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn't have the thyme.
I attempted to be a Deli Worker but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.
My best job was being a Musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy.
I studied a long time to become a Doctor, but I didn't have any patience.
Next, was a job in a shoe factory, I tried but I just didn't fit in.
I became a professional Fisherman but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.
Then I managed to get a good job working for a Pool Maintenance Company, but the work was just too draining.
So then I got a job in a Workout Centre, but they said I wasn't fit for the job.
After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a Historian - until I realized there was no future in it.

My last job was working in Starbucks but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.
SO, I TRIED RETIREMENT AND FOUND I'M PERFECT FOR THE JOB!
