HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mateja!
Technically the big day is Monday, but …she is closed Mondays. So drop in today and buy the cook a drink. Sing her a song. Wish her the best.

The following is Mateja´s Motto

Horseshoe Tournament
Yesterday was the first practice run for the world famous “El Famosos” Horseshoe Tournament on February 10th. The organizers have been overwhelmed with positive responses so expect a huge crowd for this event. If you are playing, ensure you are pre-registered.
There is a 100 peso entry fee. Not a “ringer?” No worries. There are multiple classes. Lots of prizes.
The 9th Annual Horseshoe Tournament is a charity event that raises money for the needy in Nayarit. Food, school supplies and medical items are distributed by Bob & Vicky. Registration is at Meteja´s Map on the right.

Los Amigos de La Peñita
Jan. 23 Meeting was held at Hotel California at 4:00 PM. Next Meeting on Jan. 30, Tuesday at 4:00 PM at Hotel California
Water Committee report: Martha, Eddie and Mark went to Compostela on Monday to present our letter and 188 signatures to Marco Antonio Moreno Vengas, Municipal President of Compostela. After a brief meeting, Marco invited us back on Wednesday for a private meeting to discuss the issues contained in the letter. For a report on this meeting with Marco, attend our next meeting on Jan. 30 at 4:00 PM at Hotel California.
George (Calif. Hotel) explained that Jorge Rubio from SIAPA will give amnesty to all unpaid past due accounts. It is necessary for the unpaid accounts to individually make the request for amnesty when they pay their 2007 water/sewer fee.
Bob Gibbs produced a pamphlet in English and Spanish that explains the purpose of Los Amigos so it will be easier to introduce ourselves to the Mexican residents of La Peñita and encourage their participation in our organization. This pamphlet will also be posted at various locations throughout La Peñita so all residents will become familiar with our organization and know the time and place of our meetings.
Each person at the meeting was asked to donate 50 pesos to establish a fund for miscellaneous expenses-- $850.00 Pesos were collected. So far, all expenses have been donated to our organization but as we grow, we will need a contingency fund for expenses.
It was decided to hold meetings on the second and forth Tuesday of every month but until we have dealt with all issues, we will continue to meet on a weekly basis.
Agenda for the Jan. 30 meeting: 1. Water Committee report on meeting with Marco. 2. Additional committees will be formed for Security, for Garbage and for Fund Raising. 3. How to effectively deal with the Security Issue in La Peñita for residents and business.
Mark and Eddie will not be able to attend this meeting so George and Karen will conduct this meeting.
4th MARGARITA CHALLENGE 2007
I, (Sue Moss) will be at Soley's Restaurant, courtesy of Daniel, from 9:00am until close today, Thursday Jan 25th. I will have tickets for sale and be ever so happy to take those silent auction items off your hands. So while perusing our wonderful market please be thinking about what might bring a few bucks to the cause....or bring something creative you may have in mind. I will be passing out flyers to those willing to post them in areas unassigned by Tom P and also to distribute at Tiangues.
For those that do not know me I will be wearing a black polo shirt with the Hacienda del Mar logo in bright yellow. And probably pretty wired on cappuccinos...
Another way to help is to go out to eat at your favorite restaurants and ask if they are willing to donate a dinner for 2 or 4. Email me at shmoss@mac.com and I will take it from there. All I need is a yes and a dollar value. There is no need for them to worry about actual certificates. I will create them and I will confirm all offers before submission to the silent auction.
We will submit a listing of all donors of money, items, and auction winners in the Express after the event.
This is such a generous community and much is asked of you. This challenge is a hoot! Buy a ticket and join the fun even if you are not in a position to donate this time around.
Thank you Jaltemba Bay! - Sue Moss (MC Chair 2007) 274-2540 shmoss@mac.com

CAPITAL GAINS
I have been researching this whole capital gains tax law change in Mexico and have found the following 2 articles that seem to describe it best. Of course, there are some differences in interpretation as to living in Mexico for 6 months a year and 183 days consecutively in the most recent year. Either way, it appears that if you have owned your home for over 2 years with an FM3, live in Mexico more than 6 months, have a bank account, utility bills, etc. you do not pay capital gains. Does anyone know if this is the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Also, have any of you dealt with this new law with your notarios? It is they who make the calculations and are responsible for paying Hacienda within 15 days of closing the sale.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS
Mario's Tortas
By Bill Bell
O nce in a while you find something simple but so tasty that it keeps you thinking about the last bite you had and wanting more...That´s what it is like at Mario's Tortas. I had read rave reviews on the Jaltemba Bay folk Message board and decided to try it out myself. I had the chicken tortas and it was everything others had said and more. Delicious to the last bite and as I write this I want another...but unfortunately it isn't open on Sunday. Toasted, filled with lettuce, tomatoes, a special sauce, chicken and avocados add a few jalapeños peppers (mild) and you are in heaven. So I will just have to wait. Opens at 8 am and closes at 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Located right across from the Conalep. You can´t miss the great big green building. There you will find Lupita and MARIO (Mario is the son of the Pina Colada owner. He speaks English they also serve great hamburgers and burritos. Like their sign says the ¨best of the best. Right across the highway from the La Peñita RV Resort and Spa

-Las Alejandras
By Lindy Binns
Las Alejandras is the brightest pink restaurant for miles. You can't miss it at Av Sol Nuevo, #42, Rincon de Guayabitos. The color made me stop for lunch, but the food will bring me back for breakfast and dinner. They're open everyday, 8:00 a.m. To 10:00 p.m. The restaurant is colorful, open, spacious, bright, clean, and well lit. Our waiters were young but knowledgeable and very attentive.
The menu for the most part is the usual Mexican fare, but the menu has a few twists that made it fun to read. Camerones diablo translated to demon with red peppers and al mojo de ajo was wet with garlic. Camp cook was prepared rancheras style and orden de fruta was fruit fountain. I loved the menu and spent the first fifteen minutes reading the rather lengthy menu.
I had rancheras enchiladas with potato sauce, and my friend, Patricia had a ham and cheese burrito with mild tomato sauce. My enchiladas were very good and there wasn't a potato sauce anywhere on my plate. They were covered with a light tomato sauce. The enchiladas were filled with well prepared chicken and covered with a dry cheese, lettuce and a sauce. Cucumbers and beans were served along with the enchiladas. Patricia cleaned her plate and I saw here scraping her fork along the plate looking for some sauce that might have escaped. Yes, I saw you Patricia!! The fresh roasted pepper and tomato salsa was some of the best I've tasted. Quite flavorful and medium picante. Very good. I'm tempted to go back and buy a bowl of salsa to take home.
Dia de La Constitución

This day celebrates the 1917 Constitution of the United States of Mexico that was ratified after the Mexican Revolution on February 5 1917 in Santiago de Querétaro.
The Mexican Revolution began with a call to arms by Francisco Madero on November 20 1910. It was a period of tremendous social unrest; political and military conflict characterized the period with an estimated 900,000 deaths of the 1910 15 million population. Dictator Portirio Diaz Mori was overthrown and Madero became president. In 1913 Madero was deposed and civil war engulfed the republic. Various political and armed military groups vied for power.
The proclamation of the 1917 constitution helped to end this conflict and signified the official end of the revolution.
The Constitution prescribes the 31 states and federal district that comprise the federal republic and outlines the powers of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government. It also outlines the role of the president regarding proclamation of laws.
Considered the first modern Socialist constitution, it asserts Mexico’s rights over its natural resources, recognizes labor and social rights, and the separation of church and state. It places stringent restrictions on property ownership by foreigners and the church and restricts the church from any political activities including public education. It also allows broad rights for the government to expropriate and redistribute lands.

HUMOR

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE OLD PEOPLE
A farmer stopped by the local mechanic shop to have his truck fixed. They couldn't do it while he waited, so he said he didn't live far and would just walk home.
On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem - how to carry his entire purchases home.
While he was scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, "Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?" The farmer said, "Well, as a matter of fact, my farm is very close to that house. I would walk you there but I can't carry this lot."
The old lady suggested, "Why don't you put the can of paint in the bucket. Carry the bucket in one hand; put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?"
"Why thank you very much," he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home.
On the way he says "Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time."
The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, "I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won't hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and have your way with me?"
The farmer said, "Holy smokes lady! I'm carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?"
The old lady replied, "Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I'll hold the chickens."
