New Storage Facility forGeorge talks over his storage plans with ace editor Dot Bell Jaltemba Bay

George & Loretta are taking reservations for space for 2007 in the new Storage facilities in El Monteon. The fenced area 1 block South of the school is currently undergoing massive changes. A large work crew is moving quickly to provide safe and secure storage for those who want to leave vehicles, boats, RVs and trailers in Paradise when they go back home.

The area, protected from the salt air and high winds, is perfect for storing vehicles and electronic equipment. The large reinforced roof is ready now for vehicles and those that want protection from the summer sun and heavy rains. It is extremely sturdy and high enough to provide good air circulation during the muggy months ahead.Lrretta and worker at the new facility

We visited the area last week when the backhoes were clearing the land for the Storage Rooms (bodegas) and the 24 - 7 security house. Bricks were piled high near the entrance ready for construction. George guarantees that they will be ready to go March 1 - a promise that looks like a slam dunk considering their reputation in the community and with the number of workers and equipment on the field. "We'll be ready" he says confidently.

The security for the facility will be second to none. New faicltiy in great location

"We will have 3 layers of security" says George. "Number one, we are installing electric fences." (Currently the property is surrounded by a chain link fence) "Number two - we're having 24 hour security at the gate. Number three, we are having a BIG MEAN DOG on this side of the facility. And we're having his brother on the other side."

The storage rooms - bodegas- are going to be large enough for most storage needs. In fact you can get together with a neighbor or two and share the spacious 5'X10'x10' space. Each of these rooms will be accessible by a locked door. "You will be able to lock them yourself" explains Loretta "and ensure that you stuff stays put."

We were particularly impressed by the flexibility of the owners. "If someone has a special storage need, they should come down and talk to us" say George. "One fella, for example, wants his RV hooked up to electric so his fans can keep the air moving. Well we can take care of that and just charge him a little bit extra to cover our costs. If you need something special, let's see if we can provide it for you. Now's the time."

George and Loretta are committed to providing fair and honest pricing. They guarantee no price increases for at least 5 years. "We are here for the long term. We live in this community year round and we want everyone to be happy with our services."

Customers who book for the 2007 Season will receive a 10% DISCOUNT. A GREAT DEAL CONSIDERING THE ALREADY LOW PRICES.

Hotel California Donates Dinner for FORE!

Jorge Aceves Gives for Golf For a Cure

Steak? Those Famous Shrimpballs? What'll it be? Jorge has donated a dinner for FORE from the Hotel California to the 1st Annual Community Golf Challenge, on February 25, 2007, the Field of Dreams Golf Course, Campo Ensueño. Teams from throughout the Bay Area will compete for the Jaltemba Cup - the Best Golfers in the area. Each community will challenge the others to determine which Town receives the Cup. We are expecting a sell out crowd of 150 people including players, audience and media. All proceeds will go to Cancer Research, specifically the Dana-Farber Research Hospital in Boston, associated with Harvard Medical School.  Their work has been a benefit to cancer patients throughout the world and they continue to be a leader in the field of cancer research.

The event will attract a large number of people because it involves community pride - the Best Golfers in the area. Each town will have at least one team representing their community. It will also have a number of smaller events within the event; Driving Competition, Putting Competition and potentially best Cheerleading Squad. The goal is to have a fun event and to raise money for a Cure to this deadly disease that has touched all of our lives.

ABANDONED PUPPIES

Am sending 3 photos of puppies abandoned on the road to my house.  We picked them up this a.m. early and want to put a note in the J.Express that they are up for adoption to good homes with families who will take good care of them. They are adorable and very healthy.  Contact Casa de Los Amigos at 274-0713 if you would like to see them and to adopt one. Please tell your friends as they need good homes soon.
Hope we can find good homes for them.  I know an article and photo in the Jaltemba Express is the key to finding  good homes soon!  Thanks so much.

MEXICAN KIDS

Half the time I don't know who's Canadian or who is American - just that down here we are Gringos.

One thing I did notice over the holidays is how well behaved Mexican children are; how they seem to get along with their siblings without the whining and finking on each other that I noticed yesterday when in PV at a kid friendly restaurant full of GRINGO kids.  The Mexican kids in line with their parents at Wal-Mart did not put up a caphony of "I want this" followed by tantrums that we noticed in a few gringo families, and that I have witnessed at home numerous times.  How come Mexican kids are less bratty than kids at home?
Heather - Kidless in La Peñita....

CANADIAN AMERICAN RELATIONS

I guess Vicky and I have been hiding out somewhere or all of this negative talk has gone over our heads, but never the less I will put in my two cents.

During the years that we have had our Bed and Breakfast, we sit and chat over breakfast and coffee.  We have never had or heard (directly), or entered into any conversation that put either Canadians or Americans into categories that are derogatory. Sure, and rarely, we will get overbearing or unlikable guests, but coming right down to it, I can't remember if they were Americans or Canadians.  It really doesn't matter.

I have a couple of drinking buddies from Canada and England and we BS each other from time to time but in fun.  Such as my English friend Fred who claims to have a hard time with Spanish.  To me he has a Cockney type accent and I tell him that before he can learn to speak Spanish he must learn to speak English.

Some years back a Canadian friend and I were traveling to look for new areas to check out (we left our wives at an RV park with our two rigs.)  We started looking for a place to stay for the night and spotted a small hotel that was flying a Canadian flag.   When we asked if he had a vacancy he said "your not yanks, are you".  My friend, who is from Edmonton said no and then whispered to me "just say eh once and awhile and we will be o.k."  Actually, I took no offence and thought it was funny.

Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously.

Humor - Real Beers

There's a big conference of beer producers in the most beautiful town in the world: Amsterdam, the Netherlands,

At the end of the day, all of the presidents of all beer companies decide to have a drink in a bar.

The president of 'Budweiser' orders a Bud, the president of 'Miller' orders a Miller Lite, Adolph Coors orders a Coors, and the list goes on.

Then the waitress asks the president of Corona what he wants to drink, and much to everybody's amazement, he orders a Coke!

"Why don't you order a Corona?" his colleagues ask.

"Naah. If you guys won't drink beer, then neither will I."

Feature Article - History of the Bridge for Life

The author of the following article wishes to remain anonymous. The Bridge of Life was a brain child for a number of years and the only thing lacking was money.  As more and more local workers were being killed or injured on the highway the North American residents in Guayabitos and La Peñita decided to take action and raise the money to get the bridge constructed.  I would like to remind people that prior to 2004 the highway between these two towns was only two lanes, no traffic lights and no speed limits.  There were two bridges over the river that did not have sidewalks.

In January of 2003 it was decided that some fund raisers should be organized that would give birth to the Bridge For Life.  Now you understand the reason for the name of the bridge.

The 2003 Horseshoe Tournament organized by Howell Brothers was held at Dave’s Restaurant on the beach and after the dust cleared they had a cash balance of $2050.  Looking for a place to donate this money they more than willingly donated it to the Bridge for Life Fund and the Building Fund was started.

The first official Fund Raiser was held in the Plaza in Rincon.  It involved 12 committees and 70 volunteers.  The decision was if we are going to do it lets do it big. Blue Donation boxes were placed around the two towns.  Volunteers worked the Tiangis each Thursday handing out the information given below and asking for money.  Other Volunteers went from business to business asking for donations such as T-Shirts, pens, pencils, pots anything that could be used for Raffle Prizes.  Both of these avenues were huge successes.  500 flyers were printed and pasted around both Towns and delivered to all the hotels.

Handout below – Look Familiar

BRIDGE FOR LIFE FUND RAISING EVENT

On an average one pedestrian per month is killed and many others are injured on the bridge over the river between Rincon de Guayabitos and La Peñita.  With the widening of the highway these numbers will likely increase.

The Asocicion de Residentes, A.C. Fraccionamiento de Sol Nuevo Rincon de Guayabitos,  Chamber of Commerce, Hotel and Business Association, volunteers from the Mexican Community and the International Community are working together to raise enough money to construct a cable footbridge over the river between Rincon de Guayabitos and La Peñita.

We have the approval, we have the location, we have the plans AND NOW WE NEED THE MONEY to complete this project.

Please join us in this lifesaving effort.  Please make a donation and attend the Bridge for Life Fund Raising event to be held Saturday March 8th in The Plaza, Rincon De Guayabitos 12 :00 noon to 12 midnight – fun for all – free admission - see posters for details or talk to a volunteer.

YOU COULD HELP SAVE A LIFE AND THAT LIFE COULD BE YOURS OR A LOVED ONES

The committees were:-  Site Set Up, Flea Market, Hamburger and Hot Dog Stand, Mexican Food, Bar, Bake Sale, Casino, Horseshoes, Bingo, Bocce Ball, Ticket Sellers and Donation Boxes, Sound Stage, Kiddies Corner, Face Painting, Ticket Sales, T Shirts, Raffle, Ice Cream and Financial. Believe it or not the Plaza in Rincon had not been used for many years and it was necessary to have the electrical system checked, so Captain John and Big John volunteered to take their lives into their own hands and yes we got power and had lights.

This fundraiser was pulled together in three weeks.  Set up was 8:00 a.m. on the 8th of March 2003, and the plaza began to get busy by 11:00 a.m.  Chris, Steve and Poncho couldn’t hold the crowds back from their Flea Market (all items willingly donated by the North American Community), so they had to open their Flea Market by 11:00 and were sold out by their official opening time of 12:00 noon; everything was clear profit, one of our more lucrative ventures. The day flew by, every one was run off their feet and those who attended had a great time. We sold beer at 10 pesos, Wine at 20 pesos, Mixed drinks at 30 pesos Hot dogs and popcorn at 10 pesos and Hamburgers at 20 pesos.

As our Venue was free, although it was necessary to make a formal application and presentation in Compostela to obtain a license to sell beer and wine in a public place, there were no big overheads and everything we bought or was donated were sold at profit.  Our labor force of volunteers aged between 60 and 75 worked for free. Gross Proceeds (including the $2050 from the Howells and $12,000 from the donation boxes) was $98,464.00 with net proceeds of $79,912.90.  A lot of beer and food were sold.  Although we realized more money than we expected it was not enough.  But we had a great start.

Where was this Bridge to be built? The end of Sol Neuvo in Rincon over the river to the end of Bahia Banderas, Las Peñita.

Materials were ordered delivered and stored in the Home Owners Association Bodega.  A contractor hired and work started on the bridge mid April 2003, unfortunately some of the labor which was to be donated or provided at a minimal cost had to be paid for, so some very responsible people brought the construction to a stage that it would not deteriorate over the summer of 2003 and shut down construction as the money had run out.

Work resumed around 8th of December 2003.  This was made possible by interest free loans to the Building Fund by individuals that wanted to see the bridge completed.  These individuals requested that they be nameless and we thank them once again, because without the money it would not have happen.

Now we had to raise money to pay off loans.  A Xmas Dance was held in the Plaza on December 20the 2003, Horseshoe Tournament behind Harry and Gennie’s on February 7 2004, and the money raised at the Fashion Show February 14, 2004, was donated to the building fund.  The Rincon Residents Association also got the concession to provided food for the Volkswagen Rally two years in a row and donated the proceeds.  The Jaltemba Bay web site published photos and up-dates on the bridge’s progress and donations were made by friends in the States and Canada

As our original contractor had not worked out Charlie arranged for his crew to build the upright on the La Peñita side of the bridge so that the cables could be strung.  The building fund paid the wages of the crew and Charlie donated his time.  Over the summer Harry and his helpers had cut and stained boards and they were also stored in the Bodega ready for the big day.

A crew was formed of volunteers and a paid Mexican Engineer.  Over a three day period the cables were pulled, the boards laid, the safety netting put up and voila the bridge was finished.  Sounds easy but a lot of hard work by a lot of people made it happen and they are all glad they participated and we had lots of fun along the way.

This bridge is used every day and Roque has counted over 350 pedestrians and cyclists on one day using the bridge (he lives on Sol Neuvo).  Accidents and fatalities on the highway immediately went down and have stayed down.

The Bridge Committee has tried on many occasions to pass the ownership of this bridge to the Towns of La Peñita and Rincon, however, they will not take ownership because they do not have the money to maintain it.  So once again money and volunteers are being sought to bring this valuable life saving bridge back into good repair.

Please give your time or a little money to make this happen.  Those of you who don’t know where this bridge is take some time and have a look.  It is located at the end of Sol Neuvo on the Rincon side and the end of Bahia Banderas on the La Peñita side, go ahead, enjoy yourself and laugh, take a walk across the bridge, its fun.

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!learn spanish

Learn Spanish Today

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.

Ed Bradley, His Death and Agent Orange
David Lord - PVNN

Ed Bradley joined the CBS Paris bureau as a stringer in September 1971. He transferred to the Saigon bureau in 1972 and was wounded in 1973 while on assignment in Cambodia. Moving to the CBS Washington bureau in 1974, he volunteered to return to Southeast Asia and covered the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. Bradley joined “60 Minutes” in 1981. For his work as a broadcast journalist, he won numerous awards, including 19 Emmys and a Lifetime Achievement award from the National Association of Black Journalists. Ed Bradley died on November 9, 2006.
Last week, I was interviewed on XM Satellite Radio about the death of Ed Bradley of CBS News. I stated that it may have been the result of exposure to herbicides in Viet Nam. Ed's death from Leukemia, may have been CLL-Leukemia, which is listed on the presumptive list for exposures to dioxin for all Veterans of the Vietnam War.

If Ed had been a US Veteran, rather than a CBS news reporter, both he and his surviving spouse would have received compensation. The importance of his sad death cannot be emphasized enough, as it may bring awareness and save many lives of Veterans not yet aware they too have Leukemia or some other dioxin related disease.

I am now being contacted by many Veterans from the United States for help. The list below is for you to review, please contact me for assistance if needed.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): CLL is somewhat related to, and confused with, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (another presumptive Agent Orange disease.) CLL is one of four forms of Leukemia and involves tumors of the blood.

• Chloracne or other Acneform disease consistent with Chloracne
• Hodgkin's Disease
• Multiple Myeloma
• Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
• Acute and Subacute Peripheral Neuropathy
• Porphyria Cutanea Tarda
• Type 2 Diabetes
• Prostate Cancer
• Respiratory Cancers (cancer of the lung, bronchus, larynx, or trachea)
• Soft-tissue Sarcoma (other than Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Kaposi's Sarcoma, Or Mesothelioma)

In 1984, I, and many other Vietnam Veterans, sued Dow Chemical in a class action law suit. Men like myself never received any money. There were so many Veterans that had already died from exposures that only the dead Veteran's families collected on the settlement. Now many more Veterans who have diseases on the A.O. list have rights to sue Dow Chemical.

In November 2001, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that two Vietnam Veterans who first became ill after 1994 (that is, after the settlement funds had been fully disbursed) were not bound by the 1984 settlement and therefore these two Vietnam Veterans could sue the chemical companies who manufactured Agent Orange for damages. The Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeals' decision in 2003.

Interested persons should contact counsel for the two Vietnam veterans: Gerson Smoger, Esq.

VA MOVES TO EXPAND AGENT ORANGE REGISTRY EXAMINATION TO VETERANS WITH SERVICE IN KOREA DURING 1968 AND 1969

The VA has acknowledged the possibility that some Veterans who served in the Republic of Korea during 1968 and 1969 may have been exposed to Agent Orange. Veterans who served in Korea, especially those who were stationed near the DMZ, should request an Agent Orange Registry Examination at their nearest VA Medical facility.

MENTAL HEALTH SPENDING

A study released recently by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to spend the money it budgeted to treat the mental health needs of Veterans, including those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The VA budgeted $300 million in fiscal 2005-06 for new mental health initiatives but spent only $200 million. The study also found that the VA had little or no way of tracking spending for new mental health initiatives during those two years and that some of the money it spent might not have gone toward mental health programs.

VA REPLACING OLD IDENTIFICATION CARDS

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that VA health care facilities are beginning an aggressive campaign to assure that enrolled Veterans with old versions of its ID cards are issued the new Veterans Identification Card (VIC.)

VA decided to initiate the mass replacement to reduce Veteran vulnerability to identity theft. The new VIC removed the sensitive information such as birth dates and social security numbers from the face of the card.

VHA estimates that between 3 and 4 million enrolled Veterans have not yet been issued a new VIC. VA hopes to complete the massive replacement program within the next 12 months.

2007 DISABILITY COMPENSATION RATES

If you are military Veteran with a service-related disability you may qualify for up to $2,471 in monthly benefits. These benefits are paid to Veterans who have injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, or were made worse by active military service. It is also paid to certain Veterans disabled from VA health care. These benefits are tax-free.

If you wish to support my efforts please make donation to our local American Legion Post 14 here in Puerto Vallarta. Your donation will be used to defray the expense of serving Veterans here in the Banderas Bay area.
