JALTEMBA NEWS & NOTES
Bridge Work Party a Success
Workers showed up starting at 7. Wooden boards were treated. The cables were tightened. Foot boards were repaired, replaced and secured.
Volunteers turned out in numbers to Repair the Bridge of Life – the small suspension bridge over the river that separates the two sister communities of Rincon de Guayabitos and La Peñita. The bridge was originally built with volunteers and donated money to provide a safe walking link to and from both towns. Previous to the bridge, a number of fatal pedestrian/car accidents per month occurred on the Highway 200 link.
The bridge has needed repairs primarily through due to age and misuse. Apparently motorcycles have damaged the bridge and have caused minor accidents for pedestrians. There are clear no-motorcycle signs on both entrances.
Plans for the Bridge Upgrade included posts to block motorcycles, but plans changed. “The posts would block grocery carts and baby carriages,” explains volunteer and organizer Danny Milski. “That’s not what we wanted to do.”
Milski told the Express that instead they have worked with the local police who have promised to step up their surveillance. “We asked them to give the motorcyclists tickets…..They told us they know who it is and they plan to confiscate his bike.”
Good news.
The Bridge for Life volunteer work party will resume next week. They plan to build a suspended hand rail and raise the chain link fence higher to make it safer.
Volunteers and donations are gratefully accepted.

New Dental Clinic in La Peñita
NEW DENTAL CLINIC in LA PEÑITA – ORALCARE Clinic
by Dot Bell
There is a spanking new dental clinic in town that has been receiving rave reviews from people throughout the Bay Area. “It’s wonderful” said my friend Carole. “They even have a 2 for 1 special for cleaning. Only 250 pesos.”
I decided to try it out.
The ORALCARE Clinic is located on Alfredo V Bonvill, (Parallel to the Avenida I block south) about 2 blocks up from the square. I had made an appointment on the phone for Bill and myself 2 days in advance. “250 pesos for two sounds too good to be true” I said to myself. There’s gotta be a catch….
We arrived early to the office and were greeted by Sugey (pronounced SUE-hay) an English speaking receptionist. We asked a few questions and were seated in the sparkling white reception area. Even though it was muddy on the streets, the white tiled floors gleamed.
The dentist, Dr Pablo Rivera was trained in Guadalajara and is now has relocated and lives in La Peñita. He works the clinic Monday to Friday from 9am to 2 pm, 4pm to 8pm. He also works a Half day on Saturday or as needed.
Specialists come from Guadalajara weekly to provide specific care; special root canals, implants, peridontics etc.
I was welcomed by Dr Rivera and motioned to sit down in the brand new dentist chair. The equipment was impressive; clean and very new. A state-of-the-art flat screen monitor to the side is used to show the patient a close-up of their teeth before the procedures. The doctor carefully unwraps sterilized tools, gloves and probes before the cleaning, shows me the plaque and in Spanglish we discuss what needs to be done.
The cleaning was quick and easy. None of the manual and painful scraping. The water jet cleaning was quick, painless and other than the sound of the suction and water was devoid of sound….
I asked about an implant and the doctor quickly ushered in the receptionist. I broke a tooth over the holidays and need either a bridge or an implant. Together the three of us discussed my options and lay out a treatment plan. I was impressed.
When finished I returned to the reception desk to make further appointments and to pay my bill. To my surprise, for 2 cleanings, examinations and consultation the bill remained only 250 pesos. They accept VISA and they do not tack on a handling charge to use your plastic – a common practice in Mexico.
The experience was great: An extremely clean and sterile environment. This was a painless easy cleaning with NO LECTURES or UPSALES. Do I recommend them?
Absolutely. I figure I should invite my friends from Canada and the US down and their airfare would be offset by the incredibly low prices.

AMBULANCE SUPPORT
Editor,
I don’t know if you know what is going on in Guayabitos but maybe I can help you attain this info. Can you put it on your list before Feb 10. I would appreciate it.
Starting last night Jan6/07 there is entertainment every Sat night in the Guayabitos Plaza and will continue every Sat at 8P.M until Feb 10/07. This is a free evening of entertainment and seems to be enjoyed by all who attended. The Tourism from the State puts this on for the communities and all is welcome. There are beer sales as well for the much needed extra equipment the E.M.Services for the ambulance. All the proceeds from these sales go towards this project. There are approximately 300 seats set up but there was standing room only last night so maybe anyone wishing to guarantee a seat should bring an extra one with them.
The phone number, 274-2992 is the emergency number for our area or 066 but this takes for a longer response. If you need more info call Diane at 274-1193 and all help and donations are greatly appreciated. I would like to say thanks to the people of the Brismar Bungalows (Guayabitos) for the donation from a dinner they put on last night and raised 2700 peso to buy a vital signs machine. Remember this is a free service but they have to work with what they have. Let’s make their lives easier and ours safer with more up to date equipment. Thank You

Chicky here - met you at the bridge tune up party today. First off, I'd like to mention that I'm quite enjoying the Jaltemba Express. You and Dorothy are doing an excellent job. Many of our friends who like the area stay in tune from Canada so you're becoming quite famoso!
As soon as I get the editing done on the video of the bridge party, I will upload it to my podcasting website and send you the link for all to enjoy.
In the meantime, would you kindly list our ad for the classified please...If any charges apply, just let me know.

COMPLAINERS
Editor,
Just a big Thank YOU.....
Just to let you know you and your team are doing a great job. I have been coming to Guayabitos for 25 years now. It was really great to open my mail one day and find your paper.
Today on the Oregon coast it is wet and raining. Tomorrow I will be on a plane to Guayabitos. I can’t wait to see my friends again. To see them in your paper and read about everything has just been great. Forget about the people that complain and bitch. I am just happy to see some one take on this huge job for no pay. Again a big THANK YOU to you ALL..
Linda Danna
Editor,
MS Maneras is NOT THE COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT. If someone is complaining that they didn’t get a big enough ad, or didn’t get a map etc, she kindly suggests you – the editor - have the guts to tell them to take a flying leap. Ms Maneras doesn’t have to do it for you. GET A BACKBONE.
If people don’t appreciate the hard work of the staff or act snarky…JUST CUT THEM OFF. Take their listing out. Take them off the subscription list.
I say ban the suckers…..
Ms Maneras
Editors Note The above is not the policy of the Jaltemba Express...and is only the view of MS Maneras
THANKS
Editor and all others that make this paper happen, I would like to say thank-you to all of you that bring the La Peñita RV Park to our home every day. My daughter is 5 and her grandparents stay there for quite a while and I read to her what is happening there every morning and we watch your pool web cam. She really enjoys seeing things like, where grandma and grandpa go to the dentist, or when the iguana fell out of the tree, and day to day information what is happening there.
I thank you as well for letting me see all of what happens in the park, It is great to see picture's of things we have conversations about we have through e-mail

$2084 - More contributions are coming in!
Many thanks to Bobbi and Roger Attwood for their donation of $500 pesos and the two very kind but anonymous women tennis players who gave Nancy Milski 1000 pesos for our clinic. We now have $2084.00 dollar in our fund due to these wonderful people.
Karen Hofstad from Villas Buena Vida has made a contribution through Paypal of $500.00 Canadian through Paypal in memory of Sam, her beautiful three legged dog who will be put down in a week due to age, illness and kindness on the part of his owners.
Karen has been a huge supporter of our clinic over this past year and I would love know that Sam leaves us with our love and recognition of his life.
IN MEMORY OF SAM
Sam was found at the Juneau Alaska dog shelter...turned in because he is a fence jumper and cat chaser so son, Larry, said great, I will take him.
Sam is a mixture yellow lab and other, the most gentle and intelligent dog ever, we think. German fell in love with Sam so took him from Petersburg,
Alaska to Guadalajara. Son Mark missed him so he went to Guadalajara and
brought him back to Alaska.
Mark fishes most of the time so Karen ended up the sitter.
Sam has been an important part of www.villasbuenavida.com, with many friends that return every year. He ran in front of a car in Alaska 3 years ago, loosing one leg. Sam and I just finished a car trip going from west to east and then east to west in the US and Canada for a total of 14,000 miles.
Sam, age 17 will have a memorial garden at Villas Buena Vida, a place he loved. Karen Hofstad at khofstad@alaska.com
