Information about Cancun, Mexico

Cancun Mexico hotels Cancun is one of the top vacation destinations in the world, with a great year-round warm sun, its gorgeous sandy white beaches washed by the Caribbean that are ideal for water sports. Cancun offers entertainment for all ages. In Cancun it’s easy to find excellent hotels, gourmet restaurants, and great places for shopping.

In general, Cancun has first rate tourist infrastructure and services. The greatest hotel chains in the world and the regional, beautiful hotel industry are combined to offer luxury and comfort to visitors. The waters of Cancun are calm and perfect for surfing, sailing, scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling and boat trips.

Cancun is located on the east coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, with many lagoons, sandbars and swamps; edged with beautiful coral reefs. Cancun is just two hours from most USA air-hubs, and an easy connection from just about anywhere in the world.

Several islands lie off shore: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, and Contoy. In the area between Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc, at the southern end of the hotel zone, there is a chain of coral reefs. Cancun counts with the fifth largest reef in the world, the Belize Reef; this Cancun reef has many varieties of beautiful coral.

At the hotel zone in Cancun you will find a great varied nightlife, with some of the largest discotheques in the world and restaurants. But if you look for a calmer atmosphere in Cancun hotel zone, there are jazz or piano bars, as well as those with the Mexican traditional music: mariachi.

Cancun has several marinas on the bay and at Laguna Nichupté where kayaking is well recommend. Cancun also has fascinating Mayan ruins and a museum dedicated to the Mayas that offer the visitors a clear vision of this ancestral culture. From walking on the beaches of Cancun, scuba diving on the great reefs, enjoying all the hotel infrastructure or shopping for great souvenirs, Cancun has it all to offer…enjoy it!

Cancun public services
Major rental car companies, including the U.S. based companies Budget, Avis, Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz operates from the airport and some hotels. You must be 25 years old, hold a driver's license and major credit card. Road signs are in Spanish. Rental cars are available at the airport or some agencies in town.

City buses and taxi vans run through the hotel zone and downtown. Local urban bus companies service around the hotel zone. They make all day stops at the hotels during the day. The Cancun ferry for walking passengers to Isla Mujeres departs from Puerto Juarez, just north of downtown Cancun; trips are available eight times a day in both directions. Don’t forget to ask at the hotel you are staying about schedule and fees for this service.

Cancun tourism infrastructure
Cancun offers complete and well developed tourism infrastructure. It has more than 143 hotels, featuring familiar hotel chains and family-style villas in lodging plans that range from traditional hotel settings to all-inclusive hotel paradises. Cancun offers great restaurants from around the world, fine dining and fast food chains. Besides this, Cancun has four golf courses, 22 marinas (for cruises and dive tours), modern shopping malls and handicraft markets.

Cancun airport infrastructure
In Cancun area there are three international airports at: Cancun, Cozumel and Chetumal. Cancun, in addition, counts with two hydro-ports and 3 heliports.

Activities in Cancun
Cancun offers a lot of things to do for fun, explore or just plain relax. Take a glance to the many activities you can do in your vacation down in Cancun.

Cancun Museums
In Cancun there are three museums located at the hotel zone:

1. Museo de Arqueología de Cancun, located next to the Convention Center. Shows original artifacts from the pre-Hispanic settlements in the state.

2. The Interactive Aquarium of Cancun, located in “La Isla Shopping Village” across the street from the Sheraton hotel. The first museum of its kind in Latin America, it features a series of aquariums showing all the variety of fish and coral found in the Caribbean.

3. The “Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano” at Cancun, in the “El Embarcadero” complex, located next to the Cancun Theatre. It shows the diversity of handicrafts found throughout Mexico.

Cancun city downtown

Cancun is connected to the Hotel Zone by Kukulcan Boulevard, enhanced in some areas with reproductions of pre-Hispanic sculptures. There is a 16-kilometer-long bicycle path running between Bahía de Mujeres and the mentioned boulevard, ideal for those who love to go for a walk or ride in bicycle, enjoying views of the hotels, gardens and parks.

More activities in Cancun
Besides the fun provided by beaches, diving, snorkeling and the great nightlife at the hotel zone, Cancun is a paradise for other water and land sports like golf, tennis, parasailing, sailing, rides in glass-bottom boats to delight in the marvels of underwater life or cruises to nearby islands. Visitors also enjoy ecotourism, deep sea fishing or a trip to the bull fight events.

The best snorkeling area off the beach is the public area near the Westin Regina, down in the southern tip of the hotel zone. Most of the other places (Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, or some of the lagoon tours) require a substantial trip and signing up for a tour.

Cancun for the whole family
There are many things to do in Cancun, that the hardest part is deciding what to do first. Snorkel with free dolphins at Nizuc Water Park. Discover nature’s finest at Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Tres Rios parks. Meet crocodiles in Croco Cun and Let the little one’s play in Wol-Ha’s fantasy world. Older children will love the delightfully scary Passage to Terror fun house at Cancun’s hotel zone.

Take the family shopping at major shopping malls and quaint curious markets. In Cancun’s shopping places you will find everything from pearls to piñatas at duty free prices, plus most hotels now feature full-service to kids with interactive entertainment, movies and more.

During the day, Cancun its mostly about relaxing and enjoying the cultural sites, but when the night arrives a new Cancun arises. Cancun offers a lot of nocturnal activities for everyone. From wild parties with all kinds of music and enviroments, to dinner theatre places, folkloric dances and top of the line cinemas.

NIghtlife in Cancun starts in the afternoon with the happy hour (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) and ends around 6 in the morning. If dancing is your thing, Cancun offers a wide variety of places from Latin Salsa to Louge music and light efects that will blow your mind. Come to Cancun and see it for yourserf, you will not regret it!
