"For years, our clients have asked us for updated road
logs of Mexico. The On The Road Logs are updated, simple to read, easy to
use, and offer the perfect solution that our clients have been asking for.
As we
insure over 100,000 vehicles crossing into Mexico each year, we believe that
the On The Road logs provide our customers with additional peace of mind,
and will allow them to have a more enjoyable Mexico travel
experience. They may even prevent U-turns and collisions! By using the On
The Road Logs, our clients will experience less stress and have a more
relaxed driving experience, which should also help MexPro with
reduced claims that in the past have resulted from customers getting lost or
losing their composure" ....Jim Labelle
president of Mexpro
Insurance, the leading provider of Auto Insurance for USA and Canadian
vehicles entering Mexico
We are
confident that our road logs and driving guides will make your highway
experiences just that much better and easier. Regardless of whether you are
driving an RV or a suburban, a bike or a pick-up, our road logs will assist your journey. Even 20
year veterans of the route have benefited from the information.
We decided to present the road from a driving perspective going SOUTH. When
your are looking at the Log, you read from the bottom of the page and read
up. The Pacific Ocean, for example, would always be on your right, just as
you would view it from your driver's seat.
The KM markings are the markings that you will see as you drive. It doesn't
matter if your vehicle reads in miles or kilometers. You just read the signs
on the road to get your bearings. Sometimes one highway combines with
another and old kilometer signs are left up. Not to worry, just continue to
read the guide.
Some of the best navigation points are the Pemex Station numbers clearly
marked on all gas station signs. Topes (Mexican speed bumps) are marked in
the guide just to remind you to go slow. We included Military and
Agriculture check points even though we know these can change frequently.
(Generally they are on one side of the state border or another between the Mexican
states.)

Postcards from Palenque
Palenque, Chiapas
June 2009, Photography by
Bill and Dot Bell
Hi guys,
We are staying in a town called Palenque
which is just to the south of the Yucatan
Peninsula in the state of Chiapas. We are
here to basically climb and experience the
ruins. The deserted ancient city is about 5
miles from this town.
Bill and I usually get up early and head out
first thing in the morning. It is too much
work to climb up the pyramids in the hot
sun; we try to get in and out before noon.
Today was no exception. We spent about 3
hours climbing the endless stairs; up and
down.
Palenque is one of our favorite sites: it
has a mystical feel to it. As you know I am
as plain as dirt and am not one to go off
about this spiritual experience or
that....but Palenque! Oh Palenque.
The site is built into a jungle. The foliage
is lush and Tarzan-like with vines that are
at least 6 inches in diameter and some of
the leaves are 5 ft across. Yes just one
leaf. It doesn't take much imagination to
visualize the first explorers discovering
this Mayan secret in the jungle. Every time
you visit there are new things to explore as
well as old friends to revisit.
As far as pyramids go, the ones here are
medium sized. Today when I counted 75 stairs
on one alone. Remember that each "stair" is
significantly higher than the rise on our
stairs back home. Also the run is much
narrower. We climbed up about a dozen
different pyramids; my legs began to feel
like jelly - almost like they didn't have
bones holding them up- and reminded me that
I haven't exactly been working out lately.
One of the interesting things about Palenque
is that a few of the Pyramids actually have
tombs. Unlike Egyptian pyramids, Mexican
ones are usually temples not crypts.
Today there were many new stucco reliefs on
display as well as a few new structures. In
all a day well worth it.
It is about 98 degrees today. When we
returned to the hotel we took a long swim.
The water was warmer than the outside air.
It is like a 40 foot bath and we feel
refreshed every time we "take the plunge."
The swine flu has really hurt tourism here
and so therefore the bargains are
unbelievable. We are staying at a five star
hotel for $50 per night. It is incredibly
beautiful; tastefully decorated with lots of
amenities.
Tomorrow we are off and will travel 200kms
or so along a highway with pyramid sites
every 50 kms or so. It is not well known so
there are few tourists. We are going to a
site we have never been before; the remote
site of Calakmul - the home of the largest
Mayan Pyramids in the Mayan world.
We will travel
like this and explore out of the way places
for the next 5 days as we make our way to
Cancun. We are meeting a friend there -
Mateja- and showing her around the area for
a week or so.

1992: A tiny beach on the Sonora
Coast, Mexico
Image:Bill Bell
It seemed that the only quality time
the Bells spent as family was during
their car vacations to Mexico.
We camped overnight in our VW Westphalia
camper and woke up to the sound of waves lapping
the shore ten meters away. Unfortunately, the
van had sunk overnight and was belly deep in the
sand. The tide was rising and there was no one
around.
The kids were very young; Adam was about
three and our daughter Dylan was still in
diapers. My husband Bill grabbed a board and
tried to dig us out while I scoured the beach
with the kids looking for solid objects to put
under the tires.
It didn't work. The VW was now in a
three-foot-deep hole. While we were frantically
trying to figure out what to do next, something
magical happened: the turtles hatched.

We would also like to give you
a cordial invitation to come and visit us and get to know everything that

Lake Cuitzeo, in the state of
Michoacán, offers beautiful nature sights, a spectacular collection of flora
and fauna and a slow pace to relax and unwind from all stress. It has
a perfect blend of weather, location, intimacy, tranquility and convenience.
In 2006, Cuitzeo was designated a Magical Town (Pueblo Mágico),
which means it offers visitors a magical experience, by reason of their
natural beauty, cultural riches and historical relevance.
Located only 15 minutes away
is Morelia, the state capital of Michoacán, which offers full amenities,
shopping centers (Costco, Wal-Mart, Sams Club, etc.), movie theatres, and
diverse restaurants that offer the best in national and international
cuisine. In addition, excellent, modern medical facilities are easily
accessible. Morelias amazing colonial architecture, vibrant historic
downtown area (Centro Histķrico) and
one of the most striking relics a mile-long limestone aqueduct, are
enchanting.
Being in the center of the
country will give you the opportunity to explore many tourist destinations
located within a three-hour drive.
If you crave a change from the
mainstream, commercialized tourist destinations and desire to explore the
rich culture of Mexico, come and stay with us. The only way to know
the country is to take your time and slowly savor every moment.
This area welcomes the
opportunity to serve the RV market, and in particular, those seeking to
escape the cold, harsh months of winter. Mexico is an exquisite
architectural wonder, rich in history, art and culture. It strikes the
perfect balance between culture, progress and nature and provides a
beautiful and interesting tourist destination. The mix of modern and
traditional, clichéd and surreal, is the key to Mexicos charm.

Kids and Mexico
Bringing kids to Mexico is a fantastic opportunity to have some concerted family time while exploring a different culture. Children of any age are a challenge though so I will be making some recommendations based on 3 kids and nearly two decades coming to Mexico.

The Bells Originally from North Vancouver Canada, Dorothy and Bill have been RVing to Mexico for over 15 years in a VW Van, Suburban and Trailer and motor home. They have been to every state, walked through every major city and enjoyed the hospitality of Mexicans from every corner of the country. A little bit about the Bell's - click here
The Bell's don't spend all of their time in Mexico (not that there would be anything wrong with that!) Here are a few of the places they visited last year in Canada and United States.
Knossos (alternative spellings Knossus,
Cnossus, Gnossus,
Greek Κνωσός pronounced
[kno̞ˈso̞s]), also known as the
Knossos Palace is the largest
Bronze Age
archaeological site on
Crete and probably the ceremonial and
political center of the
Minoan civilization and culture. It is also
a tourist destination today, as it is near the
main city of
Heraklion and has been substantially, if
imaginatively "restored", making the site more
comprehensible to the visitor than a field of
unmarked
ruins.
NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF ATHENS - Ancient Egypt

It is the most important archaeological museum in Greece and one of the richest
in the world concerning ancient Greek art. Its collections are representative of
all the cultures that flourished in Greece.
The construction of the museum begun in 1866 and completed in 1889 with the
gradual addition of the west wing in 1874, of the north in 1881, of the south in
1885 and finally of the east wing. The building was erected in a large plot
donated by Helen Tositsa, with the financial support of Demetrios and Nicolaos
Vernardakis, the Archaeological Society and the Greek state.

Lindos Photography
Lindos (in Greek, Λίνδος) is a town and an
archaeological site on the east coast of the
Greek island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese in
southeastern Aegean Sea. It is about 55km south
of the town of Rhodes and its fine beaches make
it a popular tourist and holiday destination.
Lindos is situated in a large bay and faces the
fishing village and small resort of Haraki.
Above the modern town rises the acropolis of
Lindos, a natural citadel which was fortified
successively by the Greeks, by the Romans, the
Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the
Ottomans. This makes the site difficult to
excavate and interpret archaeologically. The
acropolis offers spectacular views of the
surrounding harbours and coastline.

Mexico's claim to fame on the spirits front has always been tequila. What many people do not know, however, is that Mexico is also the world's third-largest beer exporter after Holland and Germany, sending an estimated 229 million gallons a year overseas. And the country's beer exports are likely to increase even further due to skyrocketing demand from the United States, which accounts for 85 percent of export consumption.More...
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recently named the agave Landscape and ancient industrial facilities in the town of Tequila a World Heritage Site. Ranked first in the Americas and eighth worldwide in this regard, Mexico now has 26 sites recognized for their historical, cultural and natural importance.more....
