The Jaltemba News

Express to Sol

Publisher Bill Bell announced the change of name from the Jaltemba Express to the Jaltemba Sol for the almost weekly newspaper for the Northern Riviera Region. "Quite simply our name has been hijacked" explained Bell. "Our domain name was purchased before we could by it."

The new Jaltemba Sol will continue to provide news and entertainment to the region.

The logo, the Aztez Sun Stone  or Piedra del Sol is recognizable throughout the world as a symbol of Mexican culture. Often mistakenly called a calendar, it is a sculpture that demonstrates how the Aztecs measured time.

Letters to the Editor

Our friends Rick & Shirley Johnson from Okotoks, Alberta will be spending some time in La
Peñita this coming winter and would appreciate being included on your mailing list for the Jaltemba Express
Looking forward to seeing you in mid-November. Best Wishes.

Bill & Jean Allan will be in Mexico this year, again. With all the property that is being developed, we were wondering if Playa Chacala is still open?  Do any of your readers know?

Hostage to a Name

Editorial – Dorothy Bell

The Jaltemba Express began a few years ago as a daily newsletter for RVers that resided in the La Peñita RV Park. We called it the La Peñita Express because we had just brought down a caravan that we had christened as such.

The newsletter was a great hit with the 200 or so residents and soon they were sending it around the world “to show the kids back home” how they were coping in Paradise. Our circulation far exceeded residents in the park.

The Jaltemba Express was Born

Last year we broadened our scope and aimed to become a community newspaper for all the coastal communities north of Banderas Bay. The name “Riviera Nayarit” hadn’t been invented yet and our coast was not marketed or branded. (Personally I kind of liked that.)

Bill and I called our daily effort the Jaltemba Express and soon our circulation soared. We haven’t counted lately but it is closing in on 5,000 subscribers with many more folks who just view it on an issue by issue basis. The Express received 46,000 hits on the internet for the last issue…an astonishing number given the population of the area. We consider it a success.

With Success Comes Challenges

In the past the Jaltemba Express just hitch hiked on our 5 year old Mexico travel website www.onthroadin.com to save expenses. For the upcoming year we wanted to develop a completely separate website as the Express takes up lots of space because it has so many pictures. Also we want to expand to the community and offer websites within the Express to various organizations and businesses.

It came as a great shock to us when we applied for the domain name Jaltemba Express to find that some unscrupulous firm had already taken it.

Give me a break. Jaltemba Express is not Coke or Jell-O. Its name we invented from our own experiences. It was our baby and someone else has beaten us to the punch. They registered Jaltembaexpress.com and have a legal right to use that name. They sell ads and have little or no content. The extent of their community content is to list the Bavarian Garden. Jeeze – no surprise to see that the “this domain may be for sale.”

Hostage to a Name or Move on

We thought about it for about 30 seconds. We’re not about to be taken hostage. We’ve had our name hijacked and they can have it. Good luck jerks. We’re the Jaltemba Sol now and those SOBs at the Express never could write well anyways.
