“Blueberries”  Oil                                              artist with ocean acrylic wall mural

Marielena Lozano: Art from the Heart

By Tara Spears

When gazing at a painting of blueberries makes you want to reach out to plop one in your mouth, that’s true art. Perhaps when looking at the six foot mural, you are transported into the scene, experiencing the gentle undulation of the warm ocean water, feeling as if you are floating with the brightly colored fish and coral: such is the power of artist Marielena Lozano’s talent.  Her passion for life and love of nature is evident in her expressionistic paintings.  While Marielena’s keen eye focuses on the beauty in ordinary things, it is her intelligence and loving nature that infuses all her pieces with such vitality.

Efren Contreras - Freddy Tours - Barco Fiesta Boats

By Adam Caddell

Living in a beach town has taught me many things. I don’t take advantage of living in this paradise called Jaltemba Bay.

My friends often remark on how white my skin is for someone who lives in Mexico. The short term vacationer tries to soak up as much sun as they can and tan until they have acquired a tint similar to roasted coffee beans.

However, for those who are long time residents; what’s the rush? Right? Wrong.

The only thing that can really shake out of this beachcomber zombie creature I have become is when a guest comes to stay and gives me a reality check.

Besides golf, darts and the market on Thursday there is an abundance of things to do while on vacation.

While residing on the beach for seven months, I would stare out at the magnificent sunsets and swear that I had the best view, but I was sadly mistaken.

Drifting along the bay were these large vessels packed with crowds three times a day, with music blaring and open bars. Presumably, these ferry like boats were filled with young kids just trying to get as wasted as possible within a two hour period. This was simply not the case, because at second glance it was packed with families who booked a whale or sunset tour, a week in advance.

Efren Contreras or Freddy of Freddy Tours is the man behind these Barco fiesta boats that have been satisfying families and groups of tourists for almost a decade. Freddy was born in Tepic but grew up here in Guayabitos, attending local schools until a short vacation to the states turned into a year.

Birthday Bash for Petra

By Adam Caddell

Tired of tacos, and not willing to let something defrost, being invited to Petra’s birthday party was a welcome excuse to not lift a finger, enjoy great food and celebrate a good friend's birthday.

Trying to look cool, I hoped to arrive at Bavarian Gardens casually late this Monday August 25th for Petra’s birthday.

Family members of Petra’s employees soon poured in, joining familiar friendly faces and extending the long table till it had to be stretched out by the sides.

As soon as Petra gave the word, a lineup quickly developed on route to the buffet.

Guests munched on fresh salads, delicious marinated chicken and juicy German sausages.

Petra was born in Munich, Bavaria and always had a passion for the rich cuisine from her native country of Germany.  On a quest to find good work and something new, Petra moved to Reno, Nevada.

“When I moved to Reno, from Germany I worked in a German restaurant called Bavaria World.”

Angry that they claimed to serve German food, Petra was disgusted.

“I refused to serve the food, I wouldn’t touch it!”

Petra insisted on retraining the staff of Bavaria World, until she was happy with what the restaurant was serving.

“The restaurant’s profit more than doubled after I re-designed its menu to feature very authentic German Food.”

Petra worked at Bavaria World for ten years, with a staff of almost all Mexicans.

“When I would get exhausted of pulling thirteen hour days, I would joke around and cry – I’m moving to Mexico!”

Tired of Reno, and wanting something different, Petra stayed in Puerto Vallarta for a month but quickly became bored of the large crowds of people.

“One of my former coworkers, had bought a place in Jaltemba Bay, and I wanted to check the area out”

It was love at first sight for Petra, who enjoyed Jaltemba Bay’s unique community and has stayed here for four years, since she first arrived.

“I created Bavarian Gardens because I wanted to offer something different to residents and tourists.”

Bavarian Gardens is a hotspot during high season, and she requires a staff of ten people.

Petra, a big believer in helping the community grow by creating more jobs, say’s that it was one of the main reasons why she opened her restaurant.

“I couldn’t do what I do, unless I had the help of my hardworking staff, the delivery people, who all go that extra mile for success.”

Petra hopes to open a deli sometime in the near future, offering European style breads and baked goods, along with good quality colds cuts.

“I was so culture shocked when I came to Mexico, I used to get homesick.” Said Petra.

“But now this is my home.”
