December 8, 2008

That's right folks come January 1, 2009 Nayarit Health Officials will be enforcing No Smoking in enclosed public places. So enjoy it while you can!

Friends gather to mourn Kenny's passing

Latest Update: Family have contacted Marty Mitchell and reported that Jomie's surgery went well and that in a few days folks can visit her in Tepic. Their concern revolves around recovery and potential infection.

She is doing so well that she may even be released in 10 days!

(Thanks Marty and Bernie) Stay tuned. Please report any more new to editor@jaltembasol.com

Road to Recovery

by Dorothy Bell

We are thankful that Jomie is in good hands. She is at ‘de Loma” a private Catholic hospital just off the park in Tepic. She is expected to be there for approximately 2 weeks. Currently she has both daughters from Texas with her as well as son-in-law Ralph. Friends have been asked by the doctors to wait until she has completed a round of surgery before she is inundated with more visitors.

Yes she will walk again and I bet she’ll be line dancing with the girls before you know it.

This is a good hospital that the Bell family is very familiar with. 2 ½ years ago Bill began bleeding internally and when it wouldn’t stop, he had a 5 1/2 hour operation performed by 3 very competent and caring surgeons. They found the cause of his lifelong stomach ailment – something the Canadian and US doctors never did locate. A 2 week stay in the hospital, surgery, blood and supplies  cost approximately $10,000 USD. We thought this a bargain.

The hospital is sparse by our NOTB standards but it is clean and has everything a patient needs. Sister Anna runs a tight ship and the medical staff are attentive and compassionate. A friend or family member is expected to stay with the patient 24 hours a day to assist with basic, non-medical patient needs. There is a bench/cot in the room for this person to sleep.

My understanding at the time of press is that Jomie does not have medical insurance. Friends are concerned and there are a few people who are collecting money and are planning fundraisers. Please open you wallets and hearts for Jomie as she begins her recovery.

Generous Ladies: More than Models for a Day

Pictures and story by Tara Spears

                                                                 Pauline, Ginger, Jan, Val

When you meet any one of these ladies, you’re always greeted with a smile and hug.  Pauline English-Gow, Ginger Payne, Jan Poteat, and Val Schrowe are more than just pretty faces seen around the Riviera Nayarit area, they are the epitome of good people.  They know how to enjoy life but are quick to lend a helping hand to those in need.  Each one is from north of the border but has chosen the Guayabitos area as home for more than 20 years.  AARP should use these energetic ladies as poster gals for how to maximize your retirement years: their full lives are packed with friendship, community involvement, grandkids, and recreational activities.

One unique characteristic of this delightful group of friends is that they are original models-still participating seven years later- for the Mujeres a Mujeres charity Fashion Show.  Jan explains how the idea got started, “We are all golf buddies. Sam LeMay came up with an idea for the first fashion show….”  Pauline continued, “She approached the lady golfers at the Field of Dreams, asking them to be models and also help her to achieve her goal of a fashion show.” Ginger added, “It was decided that we should showcase only the Mexican designers…” “The women loved the idea!” interjected the ever enthusiastic Val, “and before we left the golf course that day, all of the women were buzzing about helping the local artisans showcase their original designs.”  What started out as women chit chatting at the Field of Dreams has evolved into a serious charitable entity

As these kind-hearted ladies tell about previous shows, their eyes twinkle as they relate having the jitters before hitting the runway.  When asked if any had previous modeling or acting experience, the quartet burst into laughter. “We’re just ordinary women wanting to have fun,” Ginger said, “The designers had to teach us how to walk and move to show off the outfits.”  While the initial fashion show luncheon served 50, the present show sells out 300 tickets well in advance of the February 10, 2009 event.  “Our goal has always been to benefit this community, so we will keep the fashion show here in town,” Val explains.  “We could sell more tickets if we had a larger facility. But seating 300 is the maximum here.”  Pauline says that designers from as far away as Guadalajara and Mazalan, have asked to participate, “But we stay loyal to our local talent.”

Ginger and Val are wearing original outfits that they have modeled and purchased at previous fashion shows.   Mexican-style haute couture incorporates fabrics and colors that are suitable to a tropical lifestyle.  Intricate hand detailing, such as beads and beautiful embroidery, add flair.   Best of all, each outfit is one of a kind!  “I am just so impressed with the talent these hard-working women designers have,” said Ginger. “It isn’t the same as the fashion world in other countries. The Mexican designers have the vision but choose to stay in their home town to support their families.  The Mujeres a Mujeres annual Fashion Show is like a dream come true for them.  It is an opportunity to share their creativity with an appreciative audience.”

These modest ladies are proud that the support of the foreign community that has made the Mujeres a Mujeres Fund such a success.  “We have taken care to be totally accountable for the funds raised,” Jan said. All agreed that “it was the best thing we ever did by aligning with the independent, impartial Jaltemba Bay Foundation.  The Foundation has worked very hard to obtain tax-free status with Mexican, Canadian, and US governments, which ensures that our fund raising efforts truly go entirely to legitimate local charities.”   The Mujeres a Mujeres fashion show is composed solely of volunteers, as is the Foundation.  “It is so sad that there are unfounded, negative rumors about what happens to the donations,” Ginger said.  “People need to realize that there aren’t any charities NOB that have zero operating costs.”   Anyone wanting to apply for support of a worthy cause should contact the Jaltemba Bay Foundation:  glent232000@yahoo.com or telephone Dot Bell  327-274-3356.

It’s amazing that these active grandmothers (with a total of 28 grandkids all over the North American continent) are never too busy to pitch in and help others.  It is a shared positive outlook on life and an appreciation of our  wonderful  Mexican community that unites these diverse personalities.  Watching the four long-term friends interact gives credence to the expression “women friends are chosen sisters…”   They do indeed form a family that laughs and works together to make a difference to their adopted extended family, the Riviera Nayarit community. Hats off to all these delightful, generous volunteers!

All tickets sold ONLY in advance for the 2009 Women to Women Fashion Show!             Ginger 322-228-4318

Not a Matter of Size:

Mexican Key Limes

By Tara Spears

Top: ripe Mexican Key Lime, bottom: Persian limes

Bigger is not always better when it come to fruit. Ever notice how limes (in Spanish, limon) are everywhere in this country? What is the reason for this love affair with limes? From savoring a tangy Margarita to sipping a cola, there are numerous beverages that are served with lime.  Most local restaurants serve bowls of quartered limes with all meals, and of course, the ubiquitous agua limon is sold on the streets.   In a culture whose cuisine is spicy hot, hot, hot, the chemical composition of the lime Citrus aurantifolia, tones down the fiery effect on the palate.  As with many condiments, seasoning with lime can also be an acquired taste.

Study the photo at left. These are ripe Mexican Key limes. Because this type of lime is light yellow in color, they are mistakenly thought to be baby lemons- a totally different citrus species. Note the small size: even the largest is about the size of a golf ball. Limes are aromatic and very juicy, with a higher sugar and citric acid content that have a stronger and more complex flavor than lemons. It is because of the high vitamin C content that sailors were given limes on sea voyages (beginning in the 1400s) to prevent scurvy, hence the term ‘limey’ for sailors. I like the appearance of the Key lime trees – a tropical evergreen-that do not exceed 7 feet (2 meters) in height, making it an ideal container plant for small, sunny patios. Very adaptable to a variety of soils, the key lime tree, however, will not tolerate flooded conditions: it doesn’t like its roots in standing water. Its medium brown bark is smooth and crooked, but the branches are thorny with shiny green leaves and small clusters of 3-5 flowers that turn into fruit. The Key lime is fairly thin skinned and has a lot of seeds. Besides the heavenly fragrance of the blooms, it is so convenient to pick fresh limes as needed from the diminutive tree, making the Key lime a terrific home garden plant.

Mexico’s Gift to the World: Vanilla Planifolia

Tropical Rainforest Orchid

By Tara Spears

More than a gorgeous Mexican tropical flower, the vanilla planifolia is the only orchid that bears edible fruit.  The string bean-like pod becomes the key ingredient favored by cooks around the globe for baked goods and beverages. Vanilla’s complicated history is interwoven with mythology, horticultural discoveries, and political intrigue. But most significantly, imagine a world without chocolate!

The Fairytale:     The gentle indigenous people, Totonaca Indians, an agricultural tribe inhabiting the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Veracruz, were probably the first people to cultivate vanilla. According to Totonaca mythology, the tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, was who forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dorothy,

We are planning an extended trip to Mexico in our 34' motorhome in January.  We want to leave from McAllen, TX and travel along the Gulf Coast, down to Chiapas, west along Southern Mexico to the Pacific Coast, then north along the coast and return to the U.S.  We can not decide whether we want to take our tow vehicle with us.  Can we rely upon buses, taxis, and rental cars to "get us around" once we settle into a campground?

By the way, we have enjoyed your newsletters and website.  The information is invaluable.  We have purchased some of your downloads and appreciate the work you have done to make our journey more enjoyable.

Kenny and Jomie

We have been in touch with Stan and Eleanor at Kenny and Jomie's home, so we are about as up to date on what is happening as can be expected at this time.  But I was wondering if there is a board up anywhere with messages etc., maybe at Hinde and Jaime's or Bavarian Gardens...anyway, if you are going and if it isn't too much trouble, this is a picture that I took of them at Valentine's 2005, just before we went to work at Bavarian Garden's.  Kenny had come home with flowers for Jomie that year and she was wondering what trouble he had been in to be bringing her flowers....but no, he just wanted to, and they were beautiful.  It is a great picture of them both.

We hope to come to Rincon in the near future, but will try to let you know when.  We would love to see you two, love, Diann and Dennis

Hi!  We have been subscribers for years and love your newsletter.  We want to pass along a warning to people as they drive to PV.  Today, Friday,  we were caught in the ancient police scam where you bribe the policeman not to give you a ticket.  As far as we can recall, we had just crossed the bridge into Jalisco, on our way to Costco.  A uniformed man (white shirt, navy pants, gold shield pinned to the shirt) waved us over.  We pulled over, and he said there was a school zone nearby and the speed limit was 30 kilometers and we exceeded that.  He had a notebook in which he threatened to write us a ticket, and said we would have to return to the police station on Monday to pay the fine.  Our conversation was in Spanish which I speak well enough to manage in these situations.  I knew what was going on, so I asked him if there was a different way to settle this---and he agreed to do so for 600 pesos, which we paid.  This is a well-known scam run by greedy policemen, but the last time it happened to us was 10 years ago in Mazatlan.  We really thought that things had become better in the last few years.   Last spring we were pulled over by a state policeman in La Penita who refused all talk of a bribe, said we had to accompany him to the police station and sign the report he made out.  We did that, and he did not charge us a fine.  We had apparently made a left turn where left turns are not allowed, and of course there was no sign to tell us that, but I appreciate the fact that he was honest, would accept no money, and did not fine us.  Today was a different story.  In retrospect, we are not sure the man was actually a policeman.  Anyway, I thought you might want to warn your readers that this is going on.  Jayne Freeman, El Refugio RV Park, Lo de Marcos.

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!Free Spanish Lessons

Learn Spanish Today

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
