Mexicana initiates flights to Edmonton and Calgary

Mexicana Airlines has initiated operations on the Mexico City–Calgary and Mexico City-Edmonton routes, with a view to strengthening its presence on the international market in general and the Canadian market in
particular, where it now flies to five cities, including Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.

Four flights a week will be available on the Mexico City-Calgary route, while flights on
the Mexico City-Edmonton route will run three times a week, offering passengers daily
services to the Canadian province of Alberta.

These services will be operated using modern Airbus A319 aircraft with a capacity of
108 seats in Coach Class and 12 in the carrier’s award-winning Clase Ejecutiva
business class. Passengers en route from Alberta will now be able to catch convenient
connecting flights from the Mexico City International Airport to beach destinations and
colonial cities in Mexico, or to cities served by the carrier in Central and South America
and the rest of the world via its commercial alliances, opening up a whole new world of
possibilities for both business and leisure passengers and putting the world-class
services of Mexicana Airlines at their disposal.

- Mexicana’s announcement of this new flight to Calgary is the culmination of three
years of close cooperation with Travel Alberta and other partners from Alberta, who
have been developing strategies to promote Alberta as the preferred destination of
Mexicans,” said Travel Alberta Executive Director Derek Coke-Kerr.

- We are forging ahead and consolidating our position as the main international airline
operating out of Mexico. These new flights confirm Mexicana’s commitment to the
North American market, where Canada is a major bastion for our company,” said
Mexicana Customer Services and Corporate Communications Sr. Vice President
Adolfo Crespo.

According to information furnished by the airline, more than 24,000 passengers a year
are expected to travel on these routes, which translates into an occupation level of
63%, comprised of Mexicans visiting Canada for business or leisure and residents of
Alberta eager to enjoy Mexico’s warm weather and sample its exotic cuisine.

In the first quarter of 2008, Mexicana transported almost one million passengers
between Mexico and the United States and Canada, positioning it as the Mexican
carrier with the greatest volume of passengers on these markets, almost three times

Christmas in July!Naked girls at Christmas

Think Christmas in July. Last season, through the Barbie Angel project,
250 barbie dolls, each with several outfits, were distributed to local
children for Christmas. Dawn Blevings and I have spent the past 6
months making new hand crocheted outfits for the coming Hoilday season
and will continue to do so until Christmas. Now we need dolls to put
them on. So check out you local yard and garage sales, thrift shops.
Many previous dolls have also come from folks contacting people at
their churches and work places. As long as the dolls are still in good
shape, we have volunteers who will give them a bath, do their hair and
dress them. Please contact me if you have dolls to donate or spare
space in your vehicle to transport them to Guayabitos area. Thanks to
all of you who have helped in the past and to those of you who will be
adding to our supply this season. The joy on the faces of the little
girls who receive the dolls warms your heart and in turn helps us
contribute to a joyful Holiday. Geri aka Luisa <gd1935@goldrush.com>

Letters to the Editor

Looking for a great wedding photographer?

Hola
My husband Bruce and I live in the residential area of Guayabitos and are luckyYaro
enough to live on the beach.
Last year friends of our son got engaged on the beach in front of our casa.  It
was their first visit to Guayabitos and they fell in love with the whole area.
They liked it so much that they returned this year to get married on the same
spot where they got engaged.
Because they arrived only a few days before the wedding, I looked after most of the arrangements.
Everything turned out beautifully.
The professional photographer did a wonderful job; as did the owners of Torre
Blanca Hotel where the fiesta was held and the florist who did the flowers was
also very good.
I can't say enough good things about how beautiful the setting was, how
delicious the meal was and how great the service was at Jardin De La Torre (the
restaurant at Torre Blanca Hotal).  We were blown away with how well all the
details were looked after.
It took me a while to find a photographer, but the one I found was superb (Yaro
of Digitalo in La Penita)
The flowers were arranged by Los Petalitos (on the highway in La Penita)and were
beautiful.
I'm sure that there must be other visitors down here who might want professional
services for one special occasion or another, and won't necessarily know where
to look.
I was wondering if you could make reference in the Jaltemba Sol to Xavier and
Lorenia Flores, the owners of Restaurant Jardin De La Torre, Yara Palomera of
Digitalo Photography, Audio & Video and the florist at Los Petalitos.
I have done extensive blogging about the wedding and if you would like to take a
look at my blog, just click on:
http://www.jjinmexico.blogspot.com/
If you should decide to make reference to the above mentioned local services,
please feel free to use any of my pictures or text in my blog.
If you want any further information, please let me know.

Thank you, Jeanette Johnstone

Hello,

I have been looking at your sight for days and checking on insurance and other things. It has a lot of great information, some of the best I’ve found.

I am getting ready to take my first trip through Mexico to Cancun and was wondering if you would mind communicating with me by email to give me some advise. I’m a little scared and a lot excited.

I’m coming from Arkansas and going to take my time getting there and probably stay on state side (Corpus Christi/Brownsville) some and then cross the border.

What is the best route for a first timer to travel to get to Cancun?

If staying overnight in between the border and Cancun, where would you suggest is a descent, safe motel to stay in…what city, etc?

I would really love to chat with you and have your suggestions and advise.

Thanks so very much for the mentoring.

Thanks,

Tammie

Most Sunscreens Fail to Protect
Christopher Wanjek - LiveScience
go to original
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif

The Environmental Working Group has shone light on what may be a falsely presumed protection from sunscreen.

The simple rule of sunscreen — the higher the SPF and the thicker the slather, the better — has come under doubt.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a Washington-based research group and habitual gadfly to the business world, has found that 4 out of 5 of the nearly 1,000 sunscreen lotions analyzed offer inadequate protection from the sun or contain harmful chemicals. The biggest offenders, the EWG said, are the industry leaders: Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
While 3 out of 3 industry leaders are rather upset with the EWG report, and while some dermatologists criticize it for hyperbole, the report does underscore several long-standing health concerns:
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Sunscreens do not offer blanket protection from the sun and do little to prevent the most deadly form of skin cancer; reliance on them instead of, say, a hat and protective clothing, might be contributing to skin cancer; and the Food and Drug Administration has yet to issue any safety standards, mysteriously sitting on a set of recommendations drafted 30 years ago.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Subcutaneous homesick blues
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation, largely in two forms: UVA and UVB. Aside from sunburn, UVB exposure causes the most common forms of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, which is rarely deadly and mostly only disfiguring, and squamous cell carcinoma, which can turn deadly about 1 percent of the time.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
UVA penetrates the skin more deeply and causes wrinkling. Recent research, however, has found that UVA exacerbates the carcinogenic effects of UVB and might cause skin cancer itself.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Most sunscreens block only UVB. And the SPF system, short for Sun Protection Factor, refers only to UVB. SPF provides an estimate of a lotion's level of sunburn protection. If you start burning in about 30 minutes, then SPF 15 will allow you to stay in the sun 15 times longer before getting burned, in theory.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
SPF of 1 zillion
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Total UV protection is within reach and has been used for millennia. It's called clothing. Unfortunately this isn't so convenient when summertime fun calls for minimal clothing.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
The EWG report takes an ax to the loose SPF claims. Almost all sunscreen lotions contain chemicals that, perhaps counter-intuitively, breakdown in the presence of sunlight. But in fact this is how they block UVB from penetrating the skin, like a castle wall protecting against cannonballs until the wall crumbles.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Notions of all-day protection, as some sunscreen products claim, or even several hours of protection are ludicrous, the EWG said, because most sunscreens start deteriorating in as quickly as 15 minutes. This doesn't even account for sweat and casual rubbing, further reducing protection.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Also, few sun-worshipers use the recommended shot-glass-amount of lotion with each application. We merely think we are protected; few really are.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Controversy, not just skin deep
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
The EWG also trashed any lotion containing harmful chemicals that can easily penetrate the skin. Oxybenzone, which blocks UVA, is a main offender. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found oxybenzone in the urine of just about everyone tested.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
This chemical can promote DNA damage in the presence of sunlight. Oxybenzone and similar cancer-causing chemicals in sunscreens contribute to the minority view that sunscreens actually cause more and deadlier cancers than they prevent. Several small studies have found an increased risk of malignant melanoma, by far the deadliest form of skin cancer, among regular users of sunscreens.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Many zinc-based protects appear to be safe, according to the EWG. Until the FDA breaks its silence and offers some guidance, there's the EWG list of recommendations at http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008. Or you can move to Seattle.
