Don Pedro...the story behind the  grocer for the communityDon Pedro

 By Adam Caddell
Running low on groceries since your last stock up in Puerto Vallarta? Not sure where to turn for fresh produce and Norte Americano necessities such as peanut butter and frosted flakes? In the maze of what is the Jaltemba Bay community, a newcomer may find themselves lost and stuck for answers to these vital questions.
The day had gone by faster than I had imagined. I felt clammy and almost like I was in the twilight zone, but this time it wasn’t the Jaltemba humidity. It was my first time seeing the popular American brands; Corn Pops and Trix cereal in Mexico. I then immediately asked one of the stock girls, Maria, if Trix was a popular product in the store; “Oh yes,” said Maria, “Especially with the gringos.”
I was amused.  With most of the ex-pat community being over the age of 50, Trix was definitly not "Just for kids.”
This wasn’t the typical Mexican grocery store, just like how Jaltemba Bay isn’t a typical Mexican community.  Jaltemba is more salad bowl than melting pot. The area is a medley that has a mixed culture, where the demands stretch farther than what the standard tienda has in store.
