Free Spanish LessonsSAN DIEGO, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Sanyo Electric Co Ltd (6764.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Tuesday it will increase capacity at its solar modules plant in Monterrey in Mexico to 50 megawatts from its current 20 megawatts per year.

The plant will begin operation in December and reach 50 MW by the end of the 2008 fiscal year, Sanyo officials said at the Solar Power International conference held this week in San Diego.

Sanyo said by the end of the 2008 fiscal year, it will have total production of about 340 MW of solar modules, including the Monterrey plant, at least 145 MW production at its plant in Dorog, Hungary, and 135 MW at two plants in Japan.

Two weeks ago, Sanyo said it will talk with Nippon Oil Corp (5001.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) about a joint venture for thin-film solar cells, a move to secure funding for one of its expansion plans.

Sanyo will increase jobs at the Monterrey plant to about 300. It recently also announced plans to construct an $80 million solar cell manufacturing plant in Salem, Oregon that will create 200 jobs. That plant will make silicon ingots and wafers for solar cells. That plant is to open in two phases, the first in October 2009 and the second in 2010.
