What does an artist, a creative chef, a contemporary musician, and an astute businessman have in common?  Each individual in the Loza Frias family has impressive talents that are unified by a shared desire to make their family restaurants a unique, enjoyable dining experience for the Riviera Nayarit community. “My goal has always been to treat the customer as a friend, to provide a different type of menu” explains the gregarious patriarch, Benjamin Loza Navarro II. With more than 20 years experience operating Benjas & Tacos, Benjamin has perfected both the intriguing menu and quirky ambience that makes dining there so pleasurable.  What really sets Benjas apart from other eating establishments is the vibrant personalities of the owners: they love what they do- it is not just a business to the family, it is a calling.

Presidents Bush and Calderon Participate in Launch of

Pathways to Prosperity Program

Mexico City, September 24, 2008 - “This morning, Presidents Bush, Calderon, and the leaders of 10 other Central and South American countries with which the United States has free trade agreements met on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly and jointly announced the “Pathways to Prosperity in the Americas” initiative.  Pathways’ goal is to expand the benefits of free trade to small businesses, farmers and all our citizens by creating regional structures to support and facilitate trade among our countries.

“Free trade and open investment have been a positive story for the U.S. and Mexico -- under NAFTA our gross domestic product has grown 50%, Mexico has seen 46% growth, and we now trade over a billion dollars a day in goods and services.  Pathways will not only expand opportunities for individuals to participate in this great growth, it will enhance cooperation on regional economic development plans and improve coordination on environmental and labor standards.  In addition, it will provide opportunities to engage the private sector and civil society in advancing these goals.

“Pathways will complement other regional cooperation projects, both those in which the U.S. is involved and those being developed by our friends throughout the region.  Freer trade is an important catalyst for sustained economic growth and poverty reduction.  Pathways will further reduce barriers to trade and promote awareness of international trade opportunities among the region’s entrepreneurs.”

Bill and Dot where are you now?

"Honest Dorothy, I told the travel agent that we needed to get to Budapest!' I said to Dorothy as we climbed on board the bus from Istanbul to ....no not Budapest....Bucharest...you know the capitol of Romania.  I messed up big time and didn't read the destination on the bus ticket until it was pointed out to me at the bus depot.

Geez, these things happen and after all we said we wanted to get some adventure....well adventure we got as the bus was filled with smugglers, gypsy's  and some heavy duty partiers as traveled out of Turkey, into Bulgaria and then on to Romania.

ps Dorothy is talking to me again...though barely...must of been all that dancing on the bus with Romanian gypsy's.

Crazy Nelly

Photography and story by Adam Caddell

Well, it’s about that time again folks.  November 1st is fast approaching and hotel and restaurant owners are rejoicing, for there is no season like high season.

Various businesses all around Jaltemba Bay are starting to re-stock and get ready for the wave of both short and long term visitors.

The coasters are being stacked and beds are getting made. Its crunch time in paradise and the stakes are high. Semana Santa came too early in 2008 for the gringo community who would rather not deal with the loud stereos and large crowds, cutting the season short.  For a community that heavily relies on tourism, summer break wasn’t a picnic.

“OK, it was a nice vacation,” says Natalie West. “but, I’m ready to start working again.”

Natalie West of Crazy Nelly’s has just opened her doors and is excited for what the new season will bring. “I’m excited to see old friends, and make new ones.” says Natalie.

Natalie or “Nelly” as her friends call her, grew up in Northern California. A constant visitor to Mexico, Natalie got to see the whole country via ferry, car and even a private jet.

“The plane was great; it was a lot of fun,” says Natalie. “But the Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan was insanity!”

After climbing the corporate ladder in the mortgage business, Natalie decided to settle down in Jaltemba at the house she inherited from her late father, one of the original houses in the residential area.

“I loved the area, the friendliness and how far but conveniently located it is to Puerto Vallarta.”

With the capital she needed to start a business in Mexico; Natalie was looking for a location to start her dream sports bar, and jumped at the chance when Ricardo’s Pizzeria was up for sale. Crazy Nelly’s now running for almost two years, brings Northern Californian charm to a funky Mexican palapa.

Crazy Nelly’s is a great nightspot, especially during high season, where the party can keep going until early in the next morning. “There are those who call it a night at 9 pm, and then there are others who keep on going till 3 in the morning!” remarks Natalie.

With an already established client base, Natalie welcomes customers of all ages with open arms; the only catch is that they are young at heart.

This year the popular sports bar will add two more flat screen TV’s and a revamped menu for all those who love good pub grub.

Letters to the Editor

Hi,

I just read the newspaper and I love it!! Due to limited internet time while
in La Penita trailer park last year (we absolutely loved the park and all
the people there) I was unable to read the newspaper.

Carole sent me the reminder again and so I just looked it up and it brought
back so many memories - now I am really looking forward to coming back in
November. You bring everything to life!! Once I complete this email I am
going to go to the "Learning Spanish" section - what a gift to people like
me. So thanks in advance.

I have several questions!
1. We have a 1997 Alpenlite 5th wheel for sale and wonder if any of the
Canadian or American folks would be interested in purchasing it. How do I go
about advertising it in this wonderful newspaper?

2. I would like to have internet service in La Penita as we now have a place
of our own. Where do I get it from and how do I go about it? Is there
English spoken at the place you will recommend to me? (I hope)

3. I also require cell phone service and hope you can direct me to a place
where I can get both a cell phone and a plan.

Thank you so much, I appreciate answers to the questions when you have the
time. I'm so glad Carole brought you into my life!!

Sincerely,
Greta Farina

Well..hello..and happy news for us..Fransisco from Interactive Tech Support Center fixed our computer and it was all due to dust. We need a fan down by the tower. AND he knows what is wrong with the laptop screen and is sure he can fix that as well!!! The first cost was a mere 100 pesos!!! He is GOOOOD!!! And he arrived at 8 p.m. to reinstall the computer!!! Good service with English and reasonable prices!!! So all is good on that level.

Hope you are both having a good time..All is good with the kids and Dylan is hard at it with her school work.. Have FUN ...talk sooner.
