Some of the hard-working local volunteers at the recent cancer prosthetics clinic

    Helping Women Cancer Survivors

The women come in buses, by van, or on foot. The mood is somber as they enter La Penita Recreational Park.  They come from all over the state of Nayarit, many bearing signs of recent chemotherapy, seeking a chance to regain their feminine appearance through the generous effort of four key Canadian seasonal residents and dozens of local international volunteers. These women breast cancer survivors leave the free clinic with tears and shy smiles after being given a fitted prosthesis that raises her self-esteem and helps her maintain her dignity.  These women do not have health insurance or enough money to purchase the prosthesis that costs a minimum $500 US. Without the help of the wonderful group of volunteers, the survivors faced a life of disfigurement and cruel stares.

(Left)  Nayarit recipient of a donated Canadian prosthesis emotionally thanks volunteer, Gail Hawke, at the La Penita clinic. After dealing physically with life-threatening cancer and surviving, these women deserve an opportunity to look normal in order to resume their social and family lives. As a breast cancer survivor herself, founder Jackie Jackson says “I was fortunate in that we could afford to purchase a prosthesis (that is not covered by Canadian health insurance), so my emotional recovery could begin right away. I was horrified to learn that there was very limited help for the Mexican women.  I decided I would seek donations at home and bring the prosthetics to the Riviera Nayarit area when I came for the winter.”  The first year, 1996, Jackie gave away 28 prosthesis. As word of the project spread, many of the local international community and Canadian medical personnel have gotten involved. This year, 500 are being distributed to deserving Mexican women.

Several certified post-mastectomy fitters, associated with Nightingale Medical Supplies in Vernon, B.C. flew into Mexico to volunteer for the week-long clinic. Gail Hawke, (owner), Ester Dawson, Gloria McKay, and Jackie Jackson are pictured below. These ladies in turn trained other volunteers so that there were eight private fittings occurring simultaneously. It is touching how each of the impromptu fitting rooms included gentle objects, such as fresh flowers, Mexican art, and rugs in an effort to put the women at ease.

Longtime residents, Jomie and Kenny Thompson, helped Jackie connect with the Mexican Medical community and to help arrange locations for the fitting and distribution.  A personal friend of the Thompson’s, Dr. ‘Pepe’ Vincente Rueles, became the prosthesis project’s Mexican liaison.  He contacted the Women’s Hospital in Tepic to begin reaching out to the needy cancer survivors.  Also, since Jomie is bilingual, she speaks with the local women and medical personnel to coordinate the arrangements.

Fitting rooms, left. Jackie & Jomie, above.

It was decided that instead of rotating locations, the Cancer Survivor Prosthesis Project will be held yearly at the LaPenita RV Park. The co-chairs for next year are Judy Krajnc and Marusca Dinsmore. The RV Park’s woman’s sewing group obtained a pattern and has made dozens of immerseable prosthetics and donated them to the cause. A special thanks goes to the park manager, Carole Thacker, and her staff that worked so hard to make the event possible.

The gift of a prosthesis is priceless to the cancer survivor.  This project is the united effort of many caring international volunteers that are giving back to their adopted community.  “Who are the heroes, anyway? The very brave, or just the ordinary folks?”  In the Riviera Nayarit area, the heroes are your neighbors.

Group of ladies arriving by bus from Santiago with volunteers

    NEW

Excerpt from the Sarape (The La Penita RV Resort Newspaper)

    BREAST PROTHESIS CLINIC

WHAT A GREAT SUCCESS!!  The women (and men) of La Penita Trailer Park can be proud of their achievements!
    G' Day
I really mean 3 great days.  The volunteers, team work and the residents of the park are the backbone and make the charity endeavors successful.  The Cancer De Mama was yet another event that all of us can be proud of.  Full bus loads of women were parked at the Pemex.  The guys from the park used the park van and drove all the ladies from the Pemex to the park.  They made the run, back and forth for most of the day.  Food was prepared by the breakfast ladies and no one left the park hungry thanks to them and Abel, the veggie guy who donated vegetables and fruits, and Ramon who donated water.
Carol gave in so many ways, I fear that I'd never be able to cover everything.
We fitted 274 ladies.  We shared hugs, tears, and blessings woman to woman.  Even though we spoke different languages it didn't hold any of us back.  The language of smiles, laughter, tears, and even dancing is universal and needs no interpretation.
I wish to thank everyone who donated their time and efforts.  Without each of you we couldn't have pulled this off.  The clinic took a massive effort and many people to be successful.
We'll be having another clinic next February and will need to bring more bras and prosthetics.  Stay tuned in for more information.  Once the numbers are crunched and I have the data I'll post the items that we'll need for the clinic next year and we'll also need help in transporting them from the U.S. and Canada.
Available for purchase in the park are Breast Cancer Cookbooks.  They cost 100 pesos and 70 pesos go to the Cancer De Mama fund.  They can be purchased at site 100
    Sincerely,
    Judy Krajnc and Maruca Didsmore

    Susan

My friend Xavier Esparza and family visited us today in Nuevo Vallarta, and Xavier related an interesting story.  He asked me to communicate with the Americans in Guayabitos to see if the situation might be resolved.

The owner of a bicycle shop in La Penita accepted a nearly new bicycle owned by an American, for maintenance at his shop.  The bill came to 150 pesos.  Apparently another American came in to the shop looking for a bicycle to buy, and asked the price of the aforementioned bicycle.  Not realizing that the second American was not the owner of the bike, and not having a good grasp of the English language,  the shopkeeper replied that the price was 150 pesos.  The second American bought the freshly repaired bike for 150 pesos.

When the owner of the bike came in to retrieve his freshly maintained bike, it was no longer there, the shopkeeper had mistakenly "sold" it to the second American.  He obviously has a problem...he is responsible for the bike and now must repay the owner for the "sold" bike.

The shop keeper requests that if the person who "bought" the bike for 150 pesos recognizes himself here, please return the bike to the shop.  The owner of the small bike shop is a good, honest small-businessman.  He cannot very well afford to reimburse the owner of the bike, but has already made a first installment.

Susan, if you can transmit this to the foreign community in Guayabitos, the owner of the bike and the shopkeeper would really appreciate it.  I do not know any names here, not even the shopkeeper.  Hopefully someone will recognize the situation and make it right.

Thanks for yous help, and best wishes,
    Fred Chace

    Wanted to Rent

    Dear Editor,
I'm enjoying tremendously my subscription to Jaltemba Sol.  Thanks for creating such a great community-based information resource.  I am traveling to Nayarit at the end of the month and hope to stay in the area until the end of March.  I am a retired school teacher so I have limited funding.  I would like to rent a small, clean place within walking distance to the beach.  I can spend $250 USD per month.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  I actually prefer that it's not.  I speak Spanish so my landlords could be a local family.  I'm hoping that you or your readers might be able to help me out with some possible rentals.  Your little corner of the world seems to be an ideal place to rest, relax and write.
    Gracias,
    Tammy

Good Job La Penita RV Park

On Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25 several people from the La Penita RV Park went to the kindergarten across the and painted a mural on the school walls.

The project started before Christmas when Fred and Faye Hodson and Joe and Mary Bell purchased 40 liters of white paint for the school and the fathers of some of the students got together and painted the outside.

The idea was born that the murals would be painted. Linda Binns downloaded the characters. Judy Kranjc had the vision of the scene. The colors were collected and planning continued. It all came together Saturday and Sunday when a group went over and set to work.
Judy Kranjc, Joanne McBride, Shirley Lewis, Faye and Fred Hodson, Joe and Mary Bell and Marilyn and John Taylor
all worked hard on the project.  Everyone came back exhilarated at how much fun they had. They were all anticipating the look on the childrens' and teachers faces when they came to school. Some went over first thing Monday to see the reaction. Also it was planned that the children put painted hand prints on the walls and then a seal coat would be put on over everything. Unfortunately there was NO SCHOOL Monday, We have to wait until tomorrow!

PS. Tuesday morning a group headed over to see the reaction of the teacher and students. What fun!!!

LACY’S CORNER:  A Week in the Life of a JBAR Animal Rescuer!

    February 3rd

A woman named Pat was vacationing in Los Ayala.  Someone left two four week old puppies in front of her gate.  I asked her to take these to Celia.  She made a donation to Celia of 200 pesos.  Celia called one of her church members and the two were adopted immediately and we will sterilize when they are old enough.  A man came and checked out Luigi and Celia believes that he will come back today to pick him up.  The other two puppies have since been adopted all to Mexican families.

    February 5th

I took cat food donated by Bob and Mary Finzer to Celia today and picked a kitty for adoption from the Vivero (nursery). He had already adopted out two of the four kitties he had, is keeping one and we picked up one.  So for adoption at this time we have the dog still recovering from the burns, a small puppy and two small kitties.

    February 6th

When the dog that was burnt was brought to us, it came with another puppy.  The man who owned with the burnt dog not only put the burnt dog on the street but another puppy he had.  Today a Mexican family came by adopted the puppy.  We will sterilize this puppy at our next clinic.  I will get with Celia tomorrow due to two reasons,    Celia has used some vaccinations slotted for other animals on the puppy that was adopted so we will replace these tomorrow and get some additional dog wormer.

I spoke with Ana today.  She has two adult cats and the dog Oso at her house for adoption.  I believe the adult cats are sterilized but Oso is not. Oso was very matted but now is tick and flea free and has a proper hair cut.  Also two puppies were dropped off at Ana’s house today but have had no treatment yet.

    February 7th

I picked up the vaccinations for the burnt dog today and another vacination for a dog that needed one more of the mix. I also got a box of de-wormer pills and 20 syringes.  So total today is three mixes, one rabies, box of de-wormer and 20 syringes.

In addition to the 27 animals taken to other clinics, Lacy, Celia and Ana have taken another 7 animals to Porvenir clinic so a total of 34 animals have been sterilized in January.

    MANGE:

Mange is a major problem in our area and street animals are being treated regularly with Ivermectina.  This is one example!  Some people thought this dog (Muneca) should be put down; however with care and treatment she will recover.  I thought it might be interesting to follow her progress!

Muneca, found on the street in Los Ayala, January 19, 2009 with terrible mange.

February 2, 2009, two weeks later with treatment.  Already the redness has left her skin, her eyes are bright and the terrible odor associated with mange has disappeared.  Muneca has now been spayed and vaccinated and is well on the road to recovery.

    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hello and thank you Bill and Dot!

We just got back from driving our RV to Puerto Vallarta from Colorado Springs. I really don't know how we could of done it without your detailed step by step map. The advise you had for getting us through the border crossing process was also very valuable.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you what a great guide the map was and how informative and helpful your website was as well.

Dear Bill and Dot, just wanted to express my deepest appreciation to all the people involved in this year's Cup. They did an outstanding job. Also for your information, our friend Wayne Crayton who was instrumental in the first Jaltemba Cup had major heart surgery last week and is now recuperating at home. Ironically Wayne had just retired and was in training for a trip to Europe to run in four marathons when he discovered the problem. The Drs found severe damage to some arteries on his heart and they had to be replaced, there were complications and he ended up in surgery for eleven hours total. The Dr said the damage was caused by radiation treatments he had received for cancer when he was 20 years old. He asks about us all down here and would love to receive any emails etc while undergoing this ordeal, wcrayton@gci.net. Thank you,Gary Stackhouse

I'm hoping you can help me locate a waterfall which I found on your website.  I was looking at an old issue of the Jaltemba Express (Jan.13,2007) which pictured a beautiful waterfall.  I would love to know where it is....Can you help?
    Thanks,

    J

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!Free Spanish Lessons

Learn Spanish Today   Make 2009 the year that you learn Spanish

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
