The Kenny and Jomie Benefit Concert was a huge success. We are not sure how many people attended but we think approximately 800 or so, braved the weather and came out and enjoyed good music from noon until 10pm.

We cannot say enough about the volunteers, donors and sponsors. Below is a list of our donors and sponsors  and in the next day or so, we will publish a list of our volunteers. If I forget anyone, please let me know!

Until then, here is a list of some of our sponsors:

Go Here for our List of Sponsors, Donors and Volunteers!

MONEY

And While we're on the subject of money......

Money is still coming in (silent auction) and money is going out (leftover food and beverages) the very rough total for the evening is approximately $140,000 pesos.

And a big congratulations to Cindy Huddleston who sold 86 tickets, donated lots of auction items, and sang and played her heart out (in the band Most Wanted.)

Howell Pledge

David Howell flew in from California to represent his family at the event. They have pledged $10,000 pesos to Jomie from the upcoming Horseshoe Tournament in the memory of their father who knew them both well.

Individual donor recognition

There are individuals that have give a substantial amount of money and some that wish to remain anonymous.

Volunteers: We are having a get together at Hinde and Jaimes on Tuesday January 27th. It is the last meeting......Ha Ha

Letters

Let me begin by congratulating you and your committee on the excellent job
that you did at the Kenny and Jomie Benefit Concert last night.  I was
amazed at how well organized everything was and at the level of comraderie
that existed.  Having been involved in organizing a number of these types of
events, I know how much hard work it takes to make everything look easy.
David Easby

Wow  what a day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great job the organizing committee did in such a short time .
The music was outstanding and we enjoyed the day immensly
We are so happy to have been a part of a wonderful community coming together to support Jomie
Thanks for a great time
Dianna and Larry Belitski

I cannot believe what a blast the event was! Great music and wonderful community energy. Best event all year!

Highlights from the January 12 Meeting of Los Amigos de La Peñita

It was reported that tickets sales for Fiesta La Peñita are slow.  Los Amigos is looking for volunteers to serve as docents and servers at the event.

The Beach Clean-Up Committee tabled its proponed plan.  It includes a clean up day on January 24 at 8:30 and a number of initiatives to improve the area at the end of the Avenida.  The proposed plan was approved and the Committee was provided with a budget of 27,950 pesos to undertake this work.

Los Amigos agreed to establish the Los Amigos Scholarship Fund to finance six CONALEP/Preparatoria students for a full year’s tuition and supplies at a total cost of 18,000 pesos per year.  There will be a public service clause to encourage young people to engage in Los Amigos activities.

With respect the EcoPark, the next stage in the development of the park will be the installation of lights.  Los Amigos is funding the purchase of the necessary hardware and the Municipality has agreed to install them.

The Recycling Committee is moving ahead with the next phase of the Recycling Program.  Recycling baskets, with a Los Amigo logo, have been placed along the Avenida and are now being placed in other strategic locations in the community.  The Committee is also trying to identify sites in the community which can serve as drop off sites for the general public.

A Recognition Event is being scheduled for January 19 to thank the Directors of the schools in La Peñita and La Colonia for their help in making the first phase of the program a success.

The next meeting will be on January 26.

The full Minutes can be found on the Los Amigos de La Peñita website (www.losamigosdelapenita.com).

Volunteers Prepare Items for Sunday Concert Benefit

Val Schrowe and Renee Sommerville labeling auction items

The love and respect that the Riviera Nayarit community has for Kenny and Jomie Thompson is evident as their friends and neighbors work tirelessly to make the January 18 event a memorable occasion. There is so much laughter and camaraderie as scores of volunteers busily prepare for the Sunday fundraiser.  Every detail, from food, beverages, music, to organizing prizes is laced with fond remembrances of good times with Kenny and Jomie, local residents that recently experienced a terrible tragedy.

Over a hundred fabulous prizes, donated by local businesses and caring friends, will be available for silent auction and as raffle items.  100% of the proceeds from the event go towards Jomie’s surgical expenses and continuing medical care.

Perhaps even more important is that the community will be together for a good time-music, dancing, enjoying friends.  Experiencing happiness is the best tribute to this remarkable couple that has touched so many lives.

Come celebrate with us: everyone is welcome! Gates open at 11 am.

Wanted to Rent

Dear Editor,
I'm enjoying tremendously my subscription to Jaltemba Sol.  Thanks for creating such a great community-based information resource.  I am traveling to Nayarit at the end of the month and hope to stay in the area until the end of March.  I am a retired school teacher so I have limited funding.  I would like to rent a small, clean place within walking distance to the beach.  I can spend $250 USD per month.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  I actually prefer that it's not.  I speak Spanish so my landlords could be a local family.  I'm hoping that you or your readers might be able to help me out with some possible rentals.  Your little corner of the world seems to be an ideal place to rest, relax and write.
Gracias,
Tammy

Infusing A Flair for Life into Textiles: Designer Ruth Suarez

By Tara Spears

Combine talent with personality and you get a Ruth Suarez masterpiece: a unique textile design.  This petite designer is in demand for her custom home décor work and trademark leather accessories. The 2009 Mujeres a Mujeres Fashion Show, February 10, is pleased to be showcasing Ruth’s stunning women’s fashions.

Ruth has the rare gift of being able to conceptualize beauty in raw materials “I spread out the fabric or leather and I get a feel for a particular shape or design,” she says with a laugh, “it talks to me!”  Next, she considers the customer’s size and preferences to create a pattern.  After carefully cutting the material to accent its best qualities, Ruth sews the material to construct the finished product.  It takes about eight hours for a simple leather lady’s handbag. Rocky puts on folklorico show

By Adam Caddell

On Monday night we went to Rocky’s Hideaway. Only opened for about six weeks, Rocky’s Hideaway specializes in New Mexican cuisine.

A true icon of Jaltemba bay, Roque Garcia is one of the only truly experienced restaurateurs, and stays true to his roots of New Mexico.

Upon sitting down, we were pleased to find out that all meals come with a starter sized bowl of soup.

Excited, due to the fact that it has been a bit chilly the past couple of nights, a warm bowl of soup sounded fantastic.

We were surprised, however, that the soup that wound up at our table was below room temperature cold.

“Ahhh, its gazpacho!” I thought out loud.

Hi Dot & Bill

We have received a last minute cancellation in a two bedroom apartment.  We have available a two bedroom apartment starting on the 7th of February for one week.  If anyone out there is interested, please email us at holiday@casitadelapenita.ws.  Our website is www.casitadelapenita.ws.  We are located in La Penita in front of the beach.   It’s a lot warmer here then it is in Canada, so maybe someone might need a quick break from the cold winter.

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!Free Spanish Lessons

Learn Spanish Today   Make 2009 the year that you learn Spanish

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
