Helping the Community through the Gift of Language:

Jesus E. Montes

By Tara Spears

The first thing that one notices when meeting this soft spoken man is his sincerity. Growing up in La Penita, Jesus “Chuy” Montes has experienced the growth of the area from sleepy rural Mexican village to an international mecca where presently on a walk down the main avenida one can overhear Spanish, English, French, and other languages.  “My friends would say, ‘If only I could speak English, I could get a better job’ and since I knew English, I started teaching them informally,” explains Chuy. “Four years ago I opened a language school in order to offer more than tutoring: to provide an affordable, long-term opportunity for the townspeople to study a foreign language.” See complete story here

MONEY

And While we're on the subject of money......

Money is still coming in (silent auction) and money is going out (leftover food and beverages) the very rough total for the evening is approximately $140,000 pesos.

And a big congratulations to Cindy Huddleston who sold 86 tickets, donated lots of auction items, and sang and played her heart out (in the band Most Wanted.)

Howell Pledge

David Howell flew in from California to represent his family at the event. They have pledged $10,000 pesos to Jomie from the upcoming Horseshoe Tournament in the memory of their father who knew them both well.

Individual donor recognition

There are individuals that have give a substantial amount of money and some that wish to remain anonymous.

Wanted to Rent

Dear Editor,
I'm enjoying tremendously my subscription to Jaltemba Sol.  Thanks for creating such a great community-based information resource.  I am traveling to Nayarit at the end of the month and hope to stay in the area until the end of March.  I am a retired school teacher so I have limited funding.  I would like to rent a small, clean place within walking distance to the beach.  I can spend $250 USD per month.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  I actually prefer that it's not.  I speak Spanish so my landlords could be a local family.  I'm hoping that you or your readers might be able to help me out with some possible rentals.  Your little corner of the world seems to be an ideal place to rest, relax and write.
Gracias,
Tammy

Infusing A Flair for Life into Textiles: Designer Ruth Suarez

By Tara Spears

Combine talent with personality and you get a Ruth Suarez masterpiece: a unique textile design.  This petite designer is in demand for her custom home décor work and trademark leather accessories. The 2009 Mujeres a Mujeres Fashion Show, February 10, is pleased to be showcasing Ruth’s stunning women’s fashions.

Ruth has the rare gift of being able to conceptualize beauty in raw materials “I spread out the fabric or leather and I get a feel for a particular shape or design,” she says with a laugh, “it talks to me!”  Next, she considers the customer’s size and preferences to create a pattern.  After carefully cutting the material to accent its best qualities, Ruth sews the material to construct the finished product.  It takes about eight hours for a simple leather lady’s handbag. Rocky puts on folklorico show

By Adam Caddell

On Monday night we went to Rocky’s Hideaway. Only opened for about six weeks, Rocky’s Hideaway specializes in New Mexican cuisine.

A true icon of Jaltemba bay, Roque Garcia is one of the only truly experienced restaurateurs, and stays true to his roots of New Mexico.

Upon sitting down, we were pleased to find out that all meals come with a starter sized bowl of soup.

Excited, due to the fact that it has been a bit chilly the past couple of nights, a warm bowl of soup sounded fantastic.

We were surprised, however, that the soup that wound up at our table was below room temperature cold.

“Ahhh, its gazpacho!” I thought out loud.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Dot & Bill

We have received a last minute cancellation in a two bedroom apartment.  We have available a two bedroom apartment starting on the 7th of February for one week.  If anyone out there is interested, please email us at holiday@casitadelapenita.ws.  Our website is www.casitadelapenita.ws.  We are located in La Penita in front of the beach.   It’s a lot warmer here then it is in Canada, so maybe someone might need a quick break from the cold winter.

Thanks again.

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!Free Spanish Lessons

Learn Spanish Today   Make 2009 the year that you learn Spanish

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
