A "Tres Amigos" Event
Highlights from the January 26 Meeting of Los Amigos de La Peñita
Roberto provided an update on the Beach Clean-Up day; it was a great success. He
noted that future Clean-Ups are being scheduled for February and March and that
he will be coming back to a future meeting with recommendations on what we
should dodifferently next time as well as with an accounting of the
monies spent. The Delegado, the County Supervisor (City Councilmember) and the
President of the Citizen Action Committee were all in attendance and supported
the initiative.
Tom
reported on the status of FiestaLa Peñita.
Tickets sales have begun to pick up. The response to the silent auction has
been good. Tom is looking for a volunteer to help with photography for the
event. Sarah reminded everyone that Thomas Bartlett is underwriting the full
cost. Anyone who is unable to attend the event but wishes to make a donation
should get in touch with Ian.
Jeanie reported that of our total annual budget of 155,800 pesos, 49,855 has
already been spent and 105,945 has been earmarked. Our best current estimate is
that we will carry forward 40,000 pesos into next year plus whatever is raised
at Fiesta La Peñita.
A basket making workshop is scheduled for Thursday, January 29 at 10:00 and
another work day for the EcoPark is scheduled for January 31 at 8:00. Carlos
has been keeping the municipality informed of our activities at the park at
every step.
Tom gave a presentation on the work of Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue (JABR) and a
one-time grant to the organization in the amount of 10,000 pesos was approved.
Zobeida also announced that Judy and Maruca are spearheading a clinic for female
breast cancer survivors. There will be a prosthesis clinic session at La Peñita
RV Park on February 3/4/5 and she encouraged Los Amigos members to get involved
in this activity.
A proposal with respect to improving access for mobility impaired individuals
was presented to the Executive for review.
The next meeting will be on February 9.

Helping the Community through the Gift of
Language:
Jesus E. Montes
By Tara Spears
The first thing that one notices when meeting this soft spoken
man is his sincerity. Growing up in La Penita, Jesus “Chuy” Montes has
experienced the growth of the area from sleepy rural Mexican village to an
international mecca where presently on a walk down the main avenida one can
overhear Spanish, English, French, and other languages. “My friends would say,
‘If only I could speak English, I could get a better job’ and since I knew
English, I started teaching them informally,” explains Chuy. “Four years ago I
opened a language school in order to offer more than tutoring: to provide an
affordable, long-term opportunity for the townspeople to study a foreign
language.”

Pacific Ocean Brown Pelicans
Tara Spears
First in a series of four seabird articles
One of the first things a visitor to the Pacific Ocean
notices after the dazzling water color is the seabirds. Whether flying in dense
formation or bobbing in flocks on the water, the chunky pelican is distinctive.
The Riviera Nayarit is home to many permanent resident species of seabirds
besides being in the migratory flyway for dozens of other types of migratory
birds. One doesn’t need to be a serious bird watcher to enjoy the antics of
these amazing creatures.
As a group, seabirds almost always have webbed feet that
aid their movement on the water’s surface as well as aid diving for dinner. This
is an example of adaptation to living and feeding in the sea. All seabirds have
evolved physiologically and behaviorally due to their ocean diet. Many seabirds
feed on the ocean’s surface, as the marine currents often concentrate food such
as krill, fish, squid or other prey items within reach of a dipped head. The
plumage of most seabirds is less colorful than that of land birds, being
restricted to variations of black, grey, or white. Another survival adaptation
is to live in colonial groups, so seeing a solitary pelican is usually an
indication of illness or injury.

Want to Rent
My husband and I from BC Canada and
over 50 want to rent something from about Feb 14- April 14 in La Penita. 2
bedrooms and kitchen and within walking distance to town. was there 5 weeks in
fall and loved it. Something clean and not expensive please..
Dear Editor,
I'm enjoying tremendously my subscription to Jaltemba
Sol. Thanks for creating such a great community-based
information resource. I am traveling to Nayarit at the end
of the month and hope to stay in the area until the end of
March. I am a retired school teacher so I have limited
funding. I would like to rent a small, clean place within
walking distance to the beach. I can spend $250 USD per
month. It doesn't have to be fancy. I actually
prefer that it's not. I speak Spanish so my landlords
could be a local family. I'm hoping that you or your
readers might be able to help me out with some possible rentals.
Your little corner of the world seems to be an ideal place to
rest, relax and write.
Gracias,
Tammy

Good Job La Penita RV Park
On
Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25 several people
from the La Penita RV Park went to the kindergarten
across the and painted a mural on the school walls.
The project started before Christmas
when Fred and Faye Hodson and Joe and Mary Bell
purchased 40 liters of white paint for the school and
the fathers of some of the students got together and
painted the outside.
The idea was born that the murals would be painted.
Linda Binns downloaded the characters. Judy Kranjc had
the vision of the scene. The colors were collected and
planning continued. It all came together Saturday and
Sunday when a group went over and set to work.
Judy Kranjc, Joanne McBride, Shirley Lewis, Faye and
Fred Hodson, Joe and Mary Bell and Marilyn and John
Taylor
all worked hard on the project. Everyone came back
exhilarated at how much fun they had. They were
all anticipating the look on the childrens' and teachers
faces when they came to school. Some went over first
thing Monday to see the reaction. Also it was planned
that the children put painted hand prints on the walls
and then a seal coat would be put on over everything.
Unfortunately there was NO SCHOOL Monday, We have to
wait until tomorrow!
PS. Tuesday morning a group headed over to see the
reaction of the teacher and students. What fun!!!
Los Amigos de la Peñita -
Helping the Community Beautify It’s Beach
More than 150 people turned up on
Saturday, January 24 to help clean the
La Peñita beach as part of a beach clean up campaign
organized and funded by Los Amigos de la Peñita. The entire beach was
cleaned - from the estuary to the cemetery,
“Los
Amigos has decided to make the ‘Clean La Peñita Beach
Campaign’ a priority project for 2009,”
said Zobeida Barrera Lozano, National President. “A
clean and revitalized beach is essential in order
to better promote La Peñita to national and international tourists and
to instill community pride amongLa Peñita residents.”
The clean up day is just part of an
overall campaign. The Committee is also proposing a
number of initiatives to improve the area at the end of the Avenida.
These include: replacing the cobblestone at the end of Avenida and
Circuito Liberdad, having signs made to encourage people to keep the
beach clean, painting an artistic billboard on the south wall of the
beach, sweeping the cobblestone and sidewalk and removing sand from the
street and, subject to the approval of the Delegación,
placing boulders along the side of the to prevent cars
from parking on the beach. Los Amigos is spending roughly 30,000
pesos on this initiative.
“It’s gratifying to
see so many people, both local residents
and international visitors, show up to help out and we
want to extend our thanks to all of them,” added International President
Ken Snyder. “On February 8 from 2:30 to 6:00,
we are hosting Fiesta La Peñita
- a gala fundraising event in support of Los Amigos de La Peñita..
It is events like Fiesta La Peñita that have
enabled us to initiate the beach clean up as well as to carry out other
activities like our recycling program, the development of the children’s
park in Colonia Pescadores and our new scholarship program”
Tickets for Fiesta
La Peñita are available at
http://www.losamigosdelapenita.com or at Xaltemba
Restaurant, Daniel’s Backstreet,
Latitute 21, Bavarian Gardens,
Coldwell Banker - La Costa and Hidden
Paradise Real Estate.
Los Amigos
de la Peñita
is a community service organization comprised of residents of the local
community. Los Amigos exists to serve the people of La Peñita, the
surrounding Colonias, and the community at large through it’s
participation in activities designed to improve the lives of area
residents. Los Amigos holds its meetings in
the Restaurant/Gallery Xaltemba at 7:00 p.m every second and fourth
Monday of each month. All
are welcome.
The EcoPark Committee is planning a
cleanup day for January 31. The Park is located in Colonia Pescadores
at the corner of corner of C. Mazatlan and B. Acapulco.
We will start at 8 am as usual and go to about 10 or 11 so no one gets
too much sun.
The work for the day will include the painting of the back boards which
should be back up the third week of January. We are also trying to have
available a new set of goal posts for the soccer field. They will need
to be installed and painted. Man power permitting we will dig some
wells around the smaller trees to retain water and do additional
leveling and hole filling on the fields. Lots of work for everyone.
If you have them please bring rakes, shovels, hoes and wheel barrels.
Hi everyone! Well we have been back
in the land of cold and snow for a week now, and quite frankly
we don't like it! Bob is in Vancouver this week participating
in a big mining trade show and my plan was to be skiing. But
due to freak weather condition, the mountains are short on
snow. It seems that the ceiling was too low during the big
dumps in Dec. and then there was an inversion where temp. on the
ski hills were in the 20's C. So Bob and I are thinking that if
the snow does not start to fall in a big way soon, we will be
heading back to Mexico!
In which case, Bob and I will need a place to rent,(for those of
you reading this in Mexico). I hope this letter finds you all
well. Please take care and keep in touch. Cheers from
Bob and Jody
Hi Bill and Dot,

Hello and thank you Bill and Dot!
We just got back from driving our RV to Puerto Vallarta from Colorado
Springs. I really don't know how we could of done it without your
detailed step by step map. The advise you had for getting us through the
border crossing process was also very valuable.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you what a great guide the map was and how
informative and helpful your website was as well.
Tony & Sandy Wells
Dear Bill and Dot, just wanted to express my deepest
appreciation to all the people involved in this year's Cup. They did an
outstanding job. Also for your information, our friend Wayne Crayton who was
instrumental in the first Jaltemba Cup had major heart surgery last week and
is now recuperating at home. Ironically Wayne had just retired and was in
training for a trip to Europe to run in four marathons when he discovered
the problem. The Drs found severe damage to some arteries on his heart and
they had to be replaced, there were complications and he ended up in surgery
for eleven hours total. The Dr said the damage was caused by radiation
treatments he had received for cancer when he was 20 years old. He asks
about us all down here and would love to receive any emails etc while
undergoing this ordeal, wcrayton@gci.net. Thank you,Gary Stackhouse
I'm hoping you can help me locate a waterfall which I found
on your website. I was looking at an old issue of the Jaltemba Express
(Jan.13,2007) which pictured a beautiful waterfall. I would love to know
where it is....Can you help?
Thanks,
Jeanne Cri
Hi Bill & Dot,

of the trip.

Editor,
I have been enjoying your Website for over a year. I feel like I know
the people I see from time to time. It is apparent everyone is enjoying
their life living in Mexico. I wish I could be there too.
I do have a question, are most of the people living in RV's at a
trailer park near the beach?
Your pictures and articles makes your newsletter one of the best.
John T. Linton
editor note...The Jaltemba communities have many RV'ers as well as part
time residents who either rent bungalows, or own their own piece of
paradise. The American and Canadian full and part time residents
continue to grow in numbers.

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been
studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you
own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your
belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish
vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb
conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?
Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel
comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a
conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after
years of study?
Beginning high school and college Spanish classes,
as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching
vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is
on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests
are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words
and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to
pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence,
not just speaking.
The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking
situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in
separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say,
the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak
Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever
before.
The
Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of
learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our
free online demo lessons, you can see
how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You
will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into
your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will
already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more
confidently.
