Jaltemba Sol...the heartbeat of the Riviera Nayarit

January 5, 2009

Biggest benefit Concert ever on the Riviera Nayarit

By Bill Bell

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a community together. The recent auto fatality of well known Nayarit's Rincon de Guayabitos resident Kenny Thompson and serious injuries to his wife Jomie has not only brought together local American, Canadian and Mexican friends but also the entire Riviera Nayarit music community.

Ten well known Country and Western, Folk, Blues, Rock, and Mexican bands from Melaque, Bucerias, San Pancho, Las Varas and Rincon de Guayabitos will be coming together Sunday January 18th in La Penita (50 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta) for an  one day benefit concert to help pay Jomie Thompson’s medical bills.

Kenny Thompson, one of the first American residents of Rincon de Guayabitos, died when his moto was hit by an oncoming car on Highway 200 in early December. Jomie suffered serious injuries to both legs and has over $25,000 in medical expenses.

“Kenny loved music and he would travel all over the Nayarit coast to support the various bands. Those musicians are just giving back to his family,” said Dorothy Bell, one of the many community organizers of the 10 hour event.

Melaque’s Red Neck Mothers along with the very popular Bucerias’ Bubba and the Bottom Feeders who are reuniting for this show, are just some of the acts.  Also playing are Blues entertainer Ja’Qui, the Perez Brothers, San Poncho’s Faby and Shoe, Eric Nice and Friends, Mazatlan’s Dennis and Dianne and much more.

“We will have tents, barbeques, beer and wine, not to mention raffles,” Bell said. “This is the biggest musical event on the Riviera Nayarit.”  Tickets for the event are only 100 pesos.

“Kenny loved to party or as he would say have “a large time” and this concert is going to provide everyone a very large time.”

Tickets can be bought on line through the Jaltemba Sol ezine at www.jaltembasol.com .

Only 100 pesos

Keep your receipt and bring it with you to the concert as it will be your ticket

The Problem with Jaltemba is....its way toooo much fun!

Mexico's dangers no different than home

By James McNulty

January 4, 2009

Go to original

The recent news out of Mexican tourist haven Cabo San Lucas was not good: Two Vancouver-area men and a security guard shot in a topless bar.

Initial reports from the early-morning shooting at The Mermaid lap-dancing club were on the sketchy side.

One story claimed one of the victims was known to police, hinting at a drug-trade connection; another article suggested they were on family vacations.

Whatever the ultimate truth, the headlines did no good to Mexico's reputation as a sun-bathed landscape of banditry and bullets.

No doubt the nation currently suffers a rash of drug-cartel-induced violence, but is it a fair rap to describe the popular winter destination as exceedingly dangerous for tourists? Consider that in Mission, a 21-year-old man was found dead in a driveway after a New Year's Eve "altercation at a house party." Calgary opened New Year's Day with four homicides. Edmonton closed New Year's Eve with the city's 35th homicide of 2008, a man "found in a pool of blood in the middle of a south-side avenue." In Saskatoon, a man in his early 20s died "just hours" after New Year's Eve revelry, while in Ontario, New Year's Day brought the stabbing death of a woman in her 20s in Mississauga, and the homicide of a 41-year-old man in Ottawa.

BACKSTREET RESTAURANT AND BREWING COMPANY
Retorno Las Palmas, #8
Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico

Daniel has done it again.....opened a restaurant that meets all of the requirements: great food, ambiance, sunsets, beach, and did I mention great food?

The setting is spectacular and romantic.  The restaurant and brewing company is housed in a residence that is one of the most interesting buildings in the area.  The house curves and soars along the beach.  The main dining area is enclosed by a curved wall a third of the way around.  The rest of the room is open to the terrace.  The dining room seats four to six people at a table and the terrace is reserved for romantic tables for two.  All the tables have an outstanding view of the beach and ocean.

Our first visit was soon after we arrived in La Penita.  We opted for a romantic table on the terrace at sunset.  The menu was basically the same menu as Daniel's other restaurant but with a few additional items.  We were served an herby, garlic bread and house salad dressed simply in olive oil and vinegar.  Both were quite good.  Our second course was a mango sherbet to cleanse our palate and it accomplished that very well.  By this time we were eagerly awaiting our entrees.  My pasta and meatballs and Stan's veal parmesan were delivered and enjoyed.  The pasta sauce was thick and full flavored and the meatballs were a great balance of seasonings, including parsley.  Stan's parmesan was delicately breaded and sauced.  He mumbled through bites that it was so good.  We were too full and thought we would try desert at another time.

Last night we took friends along with us.  We were seated in the curve of the dining room.  Each of us picked a different entree.  My pork loin was moist and tender,  It had a green peppercorn and fresh mushroom sauce that was a delight.  Very flavorful.  The vegetables served  were al dente, spiced and sauteed.  No one left the vegetables on their plates!  Stan had cannelloni that was stuffed with  finely ground meats and spices with a marinara sauce.  Once again he wasn't disappointed, it was just plain good.  Judy had fish that was sauteed with a light sauce.  She requested no butter and the chef respected her wishes.  She actually said that it was one of the best fish dishes that she's ever ate.  Joe had shrimp scampi and he compared them to the first time that he had scampi in San Diego.  He loved the dish and I think he got Judy's share of the butter.  The on-site brewed beer was excellent and goes from light to dark.  I sampled 3 of the selections and found all of them good drinking.

If you want fine beach front dining and brewed on-site beer then this is the place.  Daniel is an extremely gracious host and a very good restaurateur.

Highlights from the December 22 Meeting of Los Amigos de La Peñita

International President Ken Snyder advised the group that the process of establishing Los Amigos as a non-profit group is almost complete.

The critical events with respect to Fiesta La Peñita at present are the sale of tickets and the collection of items for the auction.   The committee will provide an update on the event at the next meeting.

Ken reported that the Executive would like to move forward with two separate educational initiatives.  One would be a Scholarship Program which would provide support to individuals who were involved in community service.   The program would support individuals who wanted to pursue their education beyond grade nine either at CONALEP or at other institutions.  The second initiative would be a program to support the schools.  Committees would be established to scope out both projects and provide a proposed budget for each.  A full discussion of the two initiatives will be held at the next meeting.

It was noted that the Executive is working to create linkages with other key organizations in La Peñita: the Ejido, the Delegación and the Business Owners Association.

The next meeting will be on January 12.

The full Minutes can be found on the Los Amigos de La Peñita website (www.losamigosdelapenita.com).

a de los Reyes

los reysDía de Los Reyes is a time for a Mexican Family celebration.

This day commemorates the Epiphany - the day the 3 wise men arrived in Bethlehem after following the star, bearing gifts for the Christ child, gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In Mexico children will write to their favorite wise man or Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar, or Baltasar, and ask for the present they would like. In large cities, families go to the zocalo and children have their pictures taken with the Kings of the Orient, In the zocalo they purchase helium balloons and attach their letters addressed to the Kings.Free Spanish Lessons

Sometime during the evening figurines of the 3 wise men are added to the beautiful nativity scenes. Children place their shoes under the bed. Traditions vary here. Some families leave hay outside for the animals or cookies and milk inside for the 3 wise men. When the children awake on January 6, they immediately rush to their shoes to find their gifts.

The celebratory evening meal is called the Merienda de Reyes, and celebrates the Epiphany. A sweet bread shaped into a large oval called Rosca de Reyes is decorated with candied fruit. Hidden inside the cake is a small figurine of baby Jesus - symbolizing the hidden birth place Mary and Joseph found away from King Herod. Everyone cuts a piece of the cake and carefully inspects the piece they selected for the figurine. The lucky (or unlucky) person who finds Jesus must host a party on February 2, Candelaria or Candle Mass, and invite everyone to join in.

Go Mexico: Travel Outlook for 2009
Kitty Bean Yancey - USA Today
go to original
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif

Mexico has five spots in the top 10, including Puerto Vallarta at No. 4. Agents say there are exceptional values to be had.

Wallet-watching travelers will be taking fewer trips, waiting longer to book them in hopes of a deal and downscaling vacations.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Las Vegas will remain a big draw, and Mexico will be hotter than a chili pepper.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
That's the outlook for 2009, according to travel analysts and providers and a survey of 547 agents, managers and agency owners with Travel Leaders (formerly Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates), out today.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Vegas is the No. 1 U.S. destination Americans are booking (as it was last year), the survey says, followed by Orlando. Perhaps fueled by Obama fever, the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial and a Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (No. 10) is more of a tourists' kind of town. It moved into the top 10 "for the first time in years," says Travel Leaders spokesman Steve Loucks.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Internationally, Caribbean cruises rule yet again, but dollar-stretching Mexico has five destinations in the top 10: Cancun, No. 2; Riviera Maya, No. 3; Puerto Vallarta, No. 4; Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, No. 9; and Mexican cruises (tied for No. 10). Additionally, some Caribbean cruises call at Mexican ports.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
"You've got so many" new resorts in Mexico, and there are some exceptional values, Loucks says. He also cites increased interest in China, Mediterranean cruising and European river cruises.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
At Apple Vacations, famed for value getaways in the Caribbean and elsewhere, Mexico remains popular. Huatulco on the Pacific Coast is an up-and-coming destination, with lots of new hotel rooms, says Apple marketing vice president Sandy Babin.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Jamaica is "getting a lot of renewed attention, most likely because of all the new hotels cropping up," she says. Well-regarded all-inclusive brands with a presence in Mexico and the Dominican Republic (such as Riu and Iberostar) have new Jamaican properties and offer rates as low as $1,000 a person a week, including airfare and all you can eat and drink.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Meanwhile, well-heeled travelers are "taking a step back" and downgrading, says Roland Largay, chairman of Southbury, Conn.-based Largay Travel, who recently was named agent of the year by Travel Agent magazine.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
"The people who were going to South America are going to the Caribbean now," he says. "Cancun has been selling well, and instead of Crystal Cruises, it's Holland America."
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Rudi Steele of Rudi Steele Travel in Dallas, another high-end agency, maintains that the rich "are still going." His clients are looking to "take a break from the constant doom and gloom" and booking England more now that the dollar is better vs. the pound, as well as Morocco and South America (Patagonia, Buenos Aires and São Paulo are among in-demand destinations).
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
"Just try to get a seat on a (Dallas) non-stop to Buenos Aires, Santiago or São Paulo," he says. "They're packed."
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Other findings in the Travel Leaders 2009 trends survey:
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 90.5% say customers are cutting back on travel compared with the same period last year.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 57.4% say clients are cutting back on the length of their trips.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 31.5% say airfares on 2009 corporate bookings are equal to or lower than those in 2008.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 81.6% say clients are trading down when it comes to hotels.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 84.3% recommend Mexico as the best value outside the USA, followed by cruises (61.1%) and the Caribbean (43.9%). Agents were asked to pick up to three places.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• Despite the rise of the dollar against the euro and pound, 77% say bookings to Europe are even or down for 2009.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
• 71% say travelers are saving money by staying at all-inclusive resorts; 75.7% say vacationers are being more flexible with travel dates to get better prices.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
"If you are flexible in your travel plans, there are going to be more soft spots (in hotel rates) everywhere," says Robert Mandelbaum, director of research information services at PKF Hospi- tality Research. He says consumers will have more luck this year negotiating better rates and extras at hurting hotels. "It pays to ask," he says.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
When it comes to flights, Tom Parsons, chief of Bestfares.com, says airfares to Europe and elsewhere are coming down, and so are fuel surcharges.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
He also advises keeping an open mind when deciding where to go and looking for good hotel/air packages, which can save a lot of money.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
2009 "is going to be a travelers' market," he predicts.

Ice found on Guayabitos Beach. Polar Bears brave the incumbent 24C weather to bring attention to climate change.

First Ever Polar Bear Swim

The first Mexican Polar Bear Swim was held on the beach in Jaltemba Bay in Rincon de Guayabitos just off Retourno Pelicanos at 9 am New Years Day. A large crowd of just over a dozen people gathered at the ocean’s edge and jumped into the frosty waters.

Event organizers, Jody and Bob Butler from Naniamo BC, are all too familiar with the Polar Bear events which are held annually in various locations in British Columbia and the world. They held the event to bring attention to climate change in this area.  Water temperatures dipped into the high 70’s during the event.

"It is amazing how chilly it has become" said Jody, remarking on the 24C weather. "The wind chill factor must be at least 25C." Temperatures are expected to reach 27C later today.

Mexico Establishes Eight New Nature Reserves
Presidencia de la República
go to original

Mexico currently has 166 federal nature reserves.

Mexico City - On the subject of the conservation of Natural Protected Areas, Environment and Natural Resource Secretary Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada declared that the decree establishing eight new Nature Reserves, covering an area of 1,109,639 ha, has enabled Federal Government to meet 37% of its goal for this administration.

He said that Mexico currently has 166 federal nature reserves, accounting for over 23.1 million ha, in other words, nearly 12% of national territory, placing Mexico at the forefront of Latin America in the care and promotion of nature reserves.

He stressed that President Felipe Calderón’s government is not only committed to increasing the number of Nature Reserves in the country but also to ensuring that all of them have a management plan and sufficient resources for their optimal operation, since there is no point in establishing these areas and then abandoning them due to lack of resources, as happens in Central America and Asia and even in the state of California in the U.S.

He explained that mechanisms are being promoted in Mexico that will help maintain these areas, such as payment for environmental services, which in addition to ensuring conservation, constitutes a source of income that will improve the living standards of those resident in these areas.

Elvira Quesada explained that as part of its conservation tasks, Semarnat is working on programs to protect endangered species, in conjunction with the National Commission of Nature Reserves (CONANP), organized civil society, academics, functionaries from various government sectors and organizations, private enterprise and communities.

Another important aspect Elvira Quesada highlighted was the agreement to create the Inter-Secretarial Commission for the Sustainable Management of Seas and Coasts (June 13, 2008) that will coordinate the environmental arrangement of these territorial spaces, in order to ensure their permanence and the sustainable use of their natural resources.

Mexico Works to Protect Endangered Sea of Cortez Porpoise
Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources

Approximately 836 boats have given up fishing in favor of other activities.

During the first two years of government, President Felipe Calderón's administration assigned over $174 million pesos to promote actions to protect the vaquita porpoise, $157 million of which were allocated to conservation and technological and productive reconversion, and $25 million to actions to preserve biodiversity in the Vaquita Sanctuary.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada explained that these resources have enabled 836 boats to stop fishing in the Protection Polygon and engage in other kinds of activities, and permitted the cancellation of 1,044 fishing permits, making 1,200 square kilometers of the Vaquita Sanctuary free of fishing and incidental capture.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
These activities have been carried out in addition to the inspection and surveillance work undertaken on a permanent basis by the Naval Secretariat and the Federal Environmental Protection Bureau.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
The government official added that the National Institutes of Ecology and Fishing engage in experimental work to test new, alternative forms of fishing that will not harm the vaquita and protect the environment.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
These include the prototype of a light drag net, a net enabling larger species to escape and traps for catching scale fish and shrimp.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
As part of Semarnat's commitment to ensure the care and protection of endangered species, Elvira Quesada reported that the Acoustic Monitoring Cruise Ship recently observed a group of vaquitas on the coast of the state of Sonora, a crucial phenomenon, since there have been no records of the mammal in this part of the Upper Gulf of California for the past ten years.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
The monitoring, carried out by Mexican, U.S., Canadian, English, German and Japanese experts, showed that the pod of porpoise detected is in good health and has not registered a decline in its population, estimated at 150.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
He explained that the cruise ship's crew includes researchers from the Marine Mammals' Program of the National Institute of Ecology (INE); as well as specialists from the Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Marine Fisheries Center (NMFS).
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
He said that at the request of fishermen from San Felipe, and with the help of INE personnel, discussion and analysis workshops were held in the municipalities of San Felipe, Golfo de Santa Clara, and Puerto Peñasco (all in the Upper Gulf of California), where it was agreed that fishing activities would have sustainable planning, with ecological equilibrium for a period of 50 years.
http://banderasnews.com/images/spacer.gif
Lastly, the Semarnat director said that joint work is being carried out with the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food; the governments and universities of the state of Baja California and Sonora; the Intercultural Center of Studies of Deserts and Oceans; and Pronatura to ensure that the pledges made are shared by the three orders of government and the scientific community, in order to advance towards the conservation and recovery of the species.

Cynthia Araujo:

Expressions Designs

                          By Tara Spears

Most women want to look stylish yet feel comfortable when on vacation; most of us like to buy an outfit that has the spirit of the place we’re visiting as a souvenir that we can take home to dazzle our friends as we relate what a fab time we had on our trip.  Fortunately for us, the Riviera Nayarit boasts several professional clothing designers that capture the essence of Mexico in their original clothes.  One of the premier labels, Expressions, originates in Guayabitos and is available in the chic boutique at #88 Jacarandas Retorno Calle, in the Cabanas del Capitan hotel complex.  Fashion designer and owner, Cynthia Araujo, is available to produce custom orders that meet the customers’ needs.

Jacarandas #88 exterior                                         Inside the boutique-extensive selection

“My design philosophy is to incorporate Mexican style with easy care fabrics that are appropriate for specific party events,” Cynthia explains, “I include elements that symbolize, that are allegoric, to create unique dressy-casual wear garments.”  The lush pastel colors and delicate hand embroidery are trademarks of her clothes.  This talented designer is involved in every phase of producing the garment:  Cynthia begins with a sketch of a style; next, she develops a pattern that includes various sizes; selects the fabric and decides the color options; then sends the patterns to her four employees to be cut and sewn. Last, when the garments are constructed, Cynthia inspects the garment for quality, and if satisfied, her Expression label is affixed  and the clothes are shipped to several boutiques for retail sales, including her Guayabitos location.

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, to a Polish mother and Mexican father, Cynthia is one of five children.  “I was very fortunate to get a good education at a private French bilingual school” she says.  “I also took private lessons to learn English which has been very helpful in business as Mexico has increased its foreign tourism over the years.”

As a little girl, Cynthia loved dressing up dolls, especially Barbie.  She went from dolls to modeling clothes at age 15.  After being a model, she married and moved to Costa Rico.

Cynthia was appalled at the limited clothing choices in that country, so she started sewing clothes.  When she returned to Mexico, Cynthia began designing women’s blouses and children’s clothes for Guadalajara boutiques and her fashion career took off. Her sister had opened a small clothing store in the expanding tourist town of Guayabitos, and after visiting, Cynthia decided to purchase the store and turn it into a boutique to showcase her brand. About 15 years ago Cynthia relocated to the coast, “I love the ocean and feel more creative in this atmosphere,” she says. Cynthia’s goal for the future is to live part-time in Vancouver, Canada and open a boutique there to market her clothes.  When not working, Cynthia likes to draw and take lessons to continue improving her English.

As a business woman in a male dominated society, Cynthia feels it is harder for women to succeed.  She feels strongly that women in the area need more educational opportunities to give them career choices.  Being a business owner enables Cynthia to have more flexibility and creative control than working for someone else.  “I have more time to enjoy my family, especially my daughter, Quitzali, (29).”  Quitzali is an artist in Guadalajara and some of her work is available at the boutique.

In the years that Cynthia has lived in the Riviera Nayarit, she has witnessed firsthand the tremendous growth.  While she views the expansion good overall, she remarks, “The government has not kept up with the services, such as trash pickup or good roads.”

Cynthia’s zest for life is reflected in her beautiful, feminine clothes. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hello to all..
I am back and I have searched and she has been spotted around the beach from the cocos to the residential area.... today Sunday.
so please if you see her please contact us at the Taquero del Año (restaurant ovewr Avenue Sol Nuevo, a block away from the church going to the 'Cameron Hotel) or the (327) 2740080. there in guayabitos. It seems it is really hard for people to catch her so keeping her in a spot while we get there has to be the best choice...
I will really appreciate any assistance you can give us
Thanks in advance
ERika

Speak Spanish - That Should be Your Goal!Free Spanish Lessons

Learn Spanish Today   Make 2009 the year that you learn Spanish

Can you Speak Spanish? How long have you been studying Spanish? Between high school classes, college classes and you own efforts you could easily have a couple years already under your belt. During this time you have likely built up a good Spanish vocabulary, along with a basic understanding of Spanish verb conjugation. But can you speak Spanish?

Why is speaking Spanish so hard? Would you feel comfortable approaching a native Spanish speaker and starting a conversation? Why not? Why is it so hard to speak Spanish even after years of study?

Beginning high school and college Spanish classes, as well as most self study Spanish courses start off by teaching vocabulary and verb conjugation. You practice speaking, but the focus is on the individual word or phrase. Lists of words are memorized and tests are given on verb conjugation. So when it comes time to speak, the words and phrases are separate in your mind. It becomes a matter of trying to pull all the pieces together and form them all into a sensible sentence, not just speaking.

The key to becoming more comfortable in speaking situations is to practice and learn the sentences as a whole, not in separate pieces. This way when you are trying to remember what to say, the whole sentence pops in your mind, not just one word. You will speak Spanish more correctly, more fluently and more confidently than ever before.

The Visual Link Spanish Course allows you to utilize this effective way of learning and practice speaking Spanish. In our free online demo lessons, you can see how we utilize these strategies to truly teach you to speak Spanish. You will be able to recall everything you learn and words will come into your mind as a complete sentence not separate individual words. You will already be on your way to speaking Spanish more fluently and more confidently.
