Biggest
benefit Concert ever on the Riviera Nayarit
By
Bill Bell
Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a community together. The recent
auto fatality of well known Nayarit's Rincon de Guayabitos resident
Kenny Thompson and serious injuries to his wife Jomie has not only
brought together local American, Canadian and Mexican friends but also
the entire Riviera Nayarit music community.
Ten well known Country and Western, Folk, Blues,
Rock,
and Mexican bands from Melaque, Bucerias, San Pancho, Las Varas and
Rincon de Guayabitos will be coming together Sunday January 18th
in La Penita (50 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta) for an one day
benefit concert to help pay Jomie Thompson’s medical bills.
Kenny Thompson, one of the first American residents of Rincon de
Guayabitos, died when his moto was hit by an oncoming car on Highway 200
in early December. Jomie suffered serious injuries to both legs and has
over $25,000 in medical expenses.
“Kenny loved music and he would travel all over the Nayarit coast to
support the various bands. Those musicians are just giving back to his
family,” said Dorothy Bell, one of the many community organizers of the
10 hour event.
Melaque’s Red Neck Mothers along with the very popular Bucerias’ Bubba
and the Bottom Feeders who are reuniting for this show, are just some of
the acts. Also playing are Blues entertainer Ja’Qui, the Perez
Brothers, San Poncho’s Faby and Shoe, Eric Nice and Friends, Mazatlan’s
Dennis and Dianne and much more.
“We will have tents, barbeques, beer and wine, not to mention raffles,”
Bell said. “This is the biggest musical event on the Riviera Nayarit.”
Tickets for the event are only 100 pesos.
“Kenny loved to party or as he would say have “a large time” and this
concert is going to provide everyone a very large time.”
Tickets can be bought on line through the Jaltemba Sol ezine at

Mexico's dangers no different than home
By

The recent news out of Mexican tourist haven Cabo San Lucas was not
good: Two Vancouver-area men and a security guard shot in a topless bar.
Initial reports from the early-morning shooting at The Mermaid
lap-dancing club were on the sketchy side.
One story claimed one of the victims was known to police, hinting at a
drug-trade connection; another article suggested they were on family
vacations.
Whatever the ultimate truth, the headlines did no good to Mexico's
reputation as a sun-bathed landscape of banditry and bullets.
No doubt the nation currently suffers a rash of drug-cartel-induced
violence, but is it a fair rap to describe the popular winter
destination as exceedingly dangerous for tourists? Consider that in
Mission, a 21-year-old man was found dead in a driveway after a New
Year's Eve "altercation at a house party." Calgary opened New Year's Day
with four homicides. Edmonton closed New Year's Eve with the city's 35th
homicide of 2008, a man "found in a pool of blood in the middle of a
south-side avenue." In Saskatoon, a man in his early 20s died "just
hours" after New Year's Eve revelry, while in Ontario, New Year's Day
brought the stabbing death of a woman in her 20s in Mississauga, and the
homicide of a 41-year-old man in Ottawa.

 BACKSTREET RESTAURANT AND BREWING COMPANY
Retorno Las Palmas, #8
Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico
Daniel has done it again.....opened a restaurant that meets all of the
requirements: great food, ambiance, sunsets, beach, and did I mention
great food?
The setting is spectacular and romantic. The restaurant and brewing
company is housed in a residence that is one of the most interesting
buildings in the area. The house curves and soars along the beach.
The main dining area is enclosed by a curved wall a third of the way
around. The rest of the room is open to the terrace. The dining room
seats four to six people at a table and the terrace is reserved for
romantic tables for two. All the tables have an outstanding view of
the beach and ocean.
Our first visit was soon after we arrived in La Penita. We opted for
a romantic table on the terrace at sunset. The menu was basically the
same menu as Daniel's other restaurant but with a few additional
items. We were served an herby, garlic bread and house salad dressed
simply in olive oil and vinegar. Both were quite good. Our second
course was a mango sherbet to cleanse our palate and it accomplished
that very well. By this time we were eagerly awaiting our entrees.
My pasta and meatballs and Stan's veal parmesan were delivered and
enjoyed. The pasta sauce was thick and full flavored and the
meatballs were a great balance of seasonings, including parsley.
Stan's parmesan was delicately breaded and sauced. He mumbled through
bites that it was so good. We were too full and thought we would try
desert at another time.
Last night we took friends along with us. We were seated in the curve
of the dining room. Each of us picked a different entree. My pork
loin was moist and tender, It had a green peppercorn and fresh
mushroom sauce that was a delight. Very flavorful. The vegetables
served were al dente, spiced and sauteed. No one left the vegetables
on their plates! Stan had cannelloni that was stuffed with finely
ground meats and spices with a marinara sauce. Once again he wasn't
disappointed, it was just plain good. Judy had fish that was sauteed
with a light sauce. She requested no butter and the chef respected
her wishes. She actually said that it was one of the best fish dishes
that she's ever ate. Joe had shrimp scampi and he compared them to
the first time that he had scampi in San Diego. He loved the dish and
I think he got Judy's share of the butter. The on-site brewed beer
was excellent and goes from light to dark. I sampled 3 of the
selections and found all of them good drinking.
If you want fine beach front dining and brewed on-site beer then this
is the place. Daniel is an extremely gracious host and a very good
restaurateur.

Highlights from the December 22 Meeting of Los Amigos de La Peñita
International President Ken Snyder advised the group that the process of
establishing Los Amigos as a non-profit group is almost complete.
The critical events with respect to Fiesta
La Peñita at present are the sale of tickets and the collection
of items for the auction. The committee will provide an update on the
event at the next meeting.
Ken reported that the Executive would like to move forward with two
separate educational initiatives. One would be a Scholarship Program
which would provide support to individuals who were involved in
community service. The program would support individuals who wanted to
pursue their education beyond grade nine either at CONALEP or at other
institutions. The second initiative would be a program to support the
schools. Committees would be established to scope out both projects and
provide a proposed budget for each. A full discussion of the two
initiatives will be held at the next meeting.
It was noted that the Executive is working to create linkages with other
key organizations in La Peñita: the Ejido, the
Delegación
and the Business Owners Association.
The next meeting will be on January 12.
The full Minutes can be found on the Los Amigos de La Peñita website (www.losamigosdelapenita.com).

Día de los
Reyes
Día
de Los Reyes is a time for a Mexican Family celebration.
This day commemorates the Epiphany - the day the 3
wise men arrived in Bethlehem after following the star, bearing gifts
for the Christ child, gold, frankincense and myrrh.
In Mexico children will write to their favorite wise
man or Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar, or Baltasar, and ask for the
present they would like. In large cities, families go to the zocalo and
children have their pictures taken with the Kings of the Orient, In the
zocalo they purchase helium balloons and attach their letters addressed
to the Kings.
Sometime during the evening figurines of the 3 wise
men are added to the beautiful nativity scenes. Children place their
shoes under the bed. Traditions vary here. Some families leave hay
outside for the animals or cookies and milk inside for the 3 wise men.
When the children awake on January 6, they immediately rush to their
shoes to find their gifts.
The celebratory evening meal is called the
Merienda de Reyes, and celebrates the Epiphany. A sweet bread shaped
into a large oval called Rosca de Reyes is decorated with candied fruit.
Hidden inside the cake is a small figurine of baby Jesus - symbolizing
the hidden birth place Mary and Joseph found away from King Herod.
Everyone cuts a piece of the cake and carefully inspects the piece they
selected for the figurine. The lucky (or unlucky) person who finds Jesus
must host a party on February 2,
Candelaria or
Candle Mass,
and
invite everyone to join in.

Mexico: Travel Outlook for 2009
Kitty Bean Yancey - USA Today

Mexico has five spots in the top 10, including Puerto Vallarta at
No. 4. Agents say there are exceptional values to be had. |
|
|
Wallet-watching travelers will be
taking fewer trips, waiting longer to book them in hopes of a deal and
downscaling vacations.

Las Vegas will remain a big draw, and Mexico will be hotter than a chili
pepper.

That's the outlook for 2009, according to travel analysts and providers
and a survey of 547 agents, managers and agency owners with Travel
Leaders (formerly Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates), out today.

Vegas is the No. 1 U.S. destination Americans are booking (as it was
last year), the survey says, followed by Orlando. Perhaps fueled by
Obama fever, the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial and a Harry Potter exhibit
at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (No. 10) is more of a
tourists' kind of town. It moved into the top 10 "for the first time in
years," says Travel Leaders spokesman Steve Loucks.

Internationally, Caribbean cruises rule yet again, but dollar-stretching
Mexico has five destinations in the top 10: Cancun, No. 2; Riviera Maya,
No. 3; Puerto Vallarta, No. 4; Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, No. 9; and
Mexican cruises (tied for No. 10). Additionally, some Caribbean cruises
call at Mexican ports.

"You've got so many" new resorts in Mexico, and there are some
exceptional values, Loucks says. He also cites increased interest in
China, Mediterranean cruising and European river cruises.

At Apple Vacations, famed for value getaways in the Caribbean and
elsewhere, Mexico remains popular. Huatulco on the Pacific Coast is an
up-and-coming destination, with lots of new hotel rooms, says Apple
marketing vice president Sandy Babin.

Jamaica is "getting a lot of renewed attention, most likely because of
all the new hotels cropping up," she says. Well-regarded all-inclusive
brands with a presence in Mexico and the Dominican Republic (such as Riu
and Iberostar) have new Jamaican properties and offer rates as low as
$1,000 a person a week, including airfare and all you can eat and drink.

Meanwhile, well-heeled travelers are "taking a step back" and
downgrading, says Roland Largay, chairman of Southbury, Conn.-based
Largay Travel, who recently was named agent of the year by Travel Agent
magazine.

"The people who were going to South America are going to the Caribbean
now," he says. "Cancun has been selling well, and instead of Crystal
Cruises, it's Holland America."

Rudi Steele of Rudi Steele Travel in Dallas, another high-end agency,
maintains that the rich "are still going." His clients are looking to
"take a break from the constant doom and gloom" and booking England more
now that the dollar is better vs. the pound, as well as Morocco and
South America (Patagonia, Buenos Aires and São Paulo are among in-demand
destinations).

"Just try to get a seat on a (Dallas) non-stop to Buenos Aires, Santiago
or São Paulo," he says. "They're packed."

Other findings in the Travel Leaders 2009 trends survey:

• 90.5% say customers are cutting back on travel compared with the same
period last year.

• 57.4% say clients are cutting back on the length of their trips.

• 31.5% say airfares on 2009 corporate bookings are equal to or lower
than those in 2008.

• 81.6% say clients are trading down when it comes to hotels.

• 84.3% recommend Mexico as the best value outside the USA, followed by
cruises (61.1%) and the Caribbean (43.9%). Agents were asked to pick up
to three places.

• Despite the rise of the dollar against the euro and pound, 77% say
bookings to Europe are even or down for 2009.

• 71% say travelers are saving money by staying at all-inclusive
resorts; 75.7% say vacationers are being more flexible with travel dates
to get better prices.

"If you are flexible in your travel plans, there are going to be more
soft spots (in hotel rates) everywhere," says Robert Mandelbaum,
director of research information services at PKF Hospi- tality Research.
He says consumers will have more luck this year negotiating better rates
and extras at hurting hotels. "It pays to ask," he says.

When it comes to flights, Tom Parsons, chief of Bestfares.com, says
airfares to Europe and elsewhere are coming down, and so are fuel
surcharges.

He also advises keeping an open mind when deciding where to go and
looking for good hotel/air packages, which can save a lot of money.

2009 "is going to be a travelers' market," he predicts.

Ice found on Guayabitos Beach. Polar Bears brave the incumbent 24C
weather to bring attention to climate change.
First Ever Polar Bear Swim
The
first Mexican Polar Bear Swim was held on the beach in Jaltemba Bay in Rincon de Guayabitos just
off Retourno Pelicanos at 9 am New Years Day. A large crowd of just over
a dozen people gathered at the ocean’s edge and jumped into
the frosty waters.
Event organizers, Jody and Bob
Butler from Naniamo BC, are all too familiar with the Polar Bear events
which are held annually in various locations in British Columbia and the
world. They held the event to bring attention to climate
change in this area. Water temperatures dipped into the
high 70’s during the event.
"It is amazing how
chilly it has become" said Jody, remarking on the 24C weather. "The wind
chill factor must be at least 25C." Temperatures are expected to reach
27C later today.
