Assumption of Mary

The Assumption of Mary is the day or feast day that celebrates Mary being accepted into heaven by God after her death.

It is believed that Mary died and was taken body and soul into heaven.

Pope Pius XII in 1950 declared the Assumption of Mary as a dogma:

By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate the Assumption of Mary as Mary’s heavenly birthday (the day that Mary was received into Heaven). It is the major celebration of Mary among Catholics in the world.

In Mexico the celebration often includes a procession in towns and cities, where a statue in the likeness of Mary will be carried throughout the streets and returned to the church.
