Las Varas Carnival

by Kathy Miling

If you are looking for an exciting evening and feel a little adventurous, check out the Fiesta coming up in Las Varas just a few miles north of La Piņata RV Park on 200. The fiesta starts Feb. 3rd and goes until Feb. 12. This is a religious festival for the Mexicans celebrating the Virgin Mary.

There are fireworks which are very exciting and scary at the same time, you will see something that you would never see in Canada or the States. Every night the fireworks are set up by the Mexicans from a different neighborhood of Las Varas, therefore each night is different. I would recommend having good tennis shoes on in case you may need to run because the fireworks fly through the streets. Also, watch out for the bull.....a Mexican puts this homemade Bull on his back and runs through the streets with fireworks flying in all directions.

There are several bands in the square all playing at the same time with different tunes.

There is a Mexican style parade with costumes, dancing and singing and on the final night, real life statures of the Virgin Mary and Jesus.

And don't miss the Mexican style dancing on the stage.
There is also a large flee market with all the goodies.

From what I understand, the later dates are the best. However, there are fireworks, parades, bands and a flee market everyday. The parade usually starts around 8:00 or 9:00 and the fireworks around 10:00.

Please note; things are always subject to change.
