May 10
Mother’s Day is always celebrated on May 10th regardless of the day of the week. It began in 1922 after a well loved journalist Rafael Alducín encouraged celebration of Mother’s Day throughout Mexico and celebration quickly spread to all corners of the country.
Día de las Madres is passionate, fun and colorful. Some typical traditions include children returning to the family the previous night. It is common that the family hire musical groups to serenade the mother – often extremely early in the morning or late at night.
As in Canada and the United States, gifts of flowers and candies are common. Little towns to larger cities seem to be bursting with bouquets of brightly colored flowers often sold street-side or along highways.
