The San Jose
del Cabo Golf Course is located right inside the City of San Jose on the tip of
the Baja Peninsula. This small municipal course - only 9 holes - is the most
economical golfing in the region boasting a $50 for a round of 9 or $
66 for 18 holes. The "Los Cabo Corridor" has prohibitively expensive green fees,
all except San Jose hovering around $200 for 18 holes.
There is
something to be said about playing golf on lush green fairways surrounded by
desert and the deep blue of the Sea of Cortez. “It’s remarkable!”
San Jose’s nine-hole golf course, the first ever built in the Cabo area
certainly isn’t the best course the Baja has to offer, neither in the level of
challenge or rugged beauty, but it does have its charm and best of all…its
affordable.
Baja golf in recent years has become a golfer’s dream, with three courses
designed by Jack Nicklaus (Palmilla, El Dorado and Cabo del Sol) and designed
one by Tom Fazio at the Querencia (private). There is also Tom Weiskopf’s
signature desert course at Cabo del Sol and Intrawest’s Dye Design Raven Course
formally the Cabo San Lucas country Club. All are world class and well worth the
$150 to $200 green fees.
But for those on a modest golf allowance, the San Jose del Cabo golf Course is
the answer at $50 for the first nine holes and $16 for the second. Twilight (
starts early at 1 p.m.) is the best deal in the Cabo area at $60 for 18 holes
and that includes an electric cart.
Designed by Mario Schjeten, who built Mexico City’s famous course, San Jose has
very tight fairways that test the golfer’s skills. On this course you will find
a bit of everything to challenge you.
The tee boxes allow for long drives which are needed for the 540-yard third hole
that drives over water to a large landing area nearly 200-yards from the tee.
Stay out of the sand on the seventh and you may get yourself a birdie.

An additional 18 holes are designed for the 230 acres site across the highway.
End of November through to beginning of April is the perfect time to play golf
throughout the day as the heat rarely takes away from the game.
The clubhouse has lighted tennis courts, a pool and air conditioned bar.
This is a neat little course and the inspiration of the incredible courses that
followed its opening in 1988.
So if you golf and you are heading down the Baja make sure you bring your clubs,
you won’t regret it.
The 540 yard par 5 3rd hole is a
challenge.
