Bringing a Helping Hand

What to bring to REALLY help

We learned a long time ago that buying gum from kids hanging out on the streets was not the wisest thing to do.  We learned our lesson.  One evening in Valladolid, a small colonial city in the Yucatan, the kids crowded around us with outstretched hands. Some had Chiclets; some had beadwork or small trinkets. It was a game. Who could get some money from these Gringos. It felt uncomfortable. Sometimes older boys would say "Hey Gringo. Dollars?" with an outstretched palm.

We parted with some Mexican coins feeling that we weren't doing any real good in the long run. The hands didn't stop probing and an even larger crowd followed us. To the restaurant, around the zocalo.

A matronly woman approached us as we distributed even more coin. She shook her finger at the kids and tugged on my sleeve. "Si" she said as she led us to a plaque on one side of the square. "No mas," she said and turned away.

We changed our tactics after Valladolid. We visit a dollar store before we leave home and buy colorful pencils, rulers and other gift school supplies. We get a few tinker toys or trinkets if it is Christmas. $20 goes a long way at a dollar store and we feel that we are not contributing to a vicious circle. But pencils are only one thing.

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO HELP UNDERPRIVILEGED  MEXICANS, bring special gifts inside your rig. Any Red Cross will appreciate used walkers, crutches, hearing aids. Squeeze them in a corner of your rig. An old wheelchair is always welcome. Jeeze it would be a gift from heaven for someone who can't get around. Search through your home. Pick up something useable at a garage sale.
