Kayak Baja

Paddle for Cancer

Four colorful kayaks with three women and one man from Bellingham Washington left Loreto a few days bringing them 2/3 of their way through their journey.  Approximately 600  miles down the inside of the Sea of Cortez, the team, who has dedicated the trip to bring awareness to ovarian cancer, touched shore for some deserved R & R before continuing their challenging trek down the inside coast of the Baja peninsula on the west coast of Mexico.

Suzie Dale

The trip began on October 24, 2004 and will finish in Cabo San Lucas (at the tip of 1000 mile long peninsula) tentatively early January. The three women and solo male from Washington State planned extensively for this grueling test of skill which will lead them through calm bays and rough wide open stretches of unprotected waters. Their medic bag included sutures, trauma kits, and antidotes for scorpions.

The solid orange line indicates where the team has paddled.

The dots indicate their goal by New Year.

The team, Rachel Brown, Trisha Wilkie, Suzie Dale and Frewin Hermer, paddles 10-15 miles a day and camps on the desolate coastline at night. They drink the fresh water they haul in their slender personal crafts and eat a diet of dehydrated foods they store and fresh fish they catch daily from the Sea of Cortez. They stop in isolated communities whenever possible to send messages home to family and friends at internet cafés. They have spent a week without seeing someone outside their team.

Frewin Hermer

Dale's mother Anne Dale passed away from ovarian cancer last summer while the team planned this arduous journey.

The determined crew is documenting their journey extensively with pictures and journals to assist future kayakers. They encourage everyone to visit their website (http://home.earthlink.net/~frewinh) for updates and current pictures.

They are expected to reach La Paz mid December.
