Guadalajara Special –
Driving There From Guayabitos and La Penita
There are a lot of people who have recently traveled to Guadalajara and
there are others who are considering the trip. In the next editions of the
La Peñita Express we will give you some instructions and general hints.
Traveling by Car
From La
Peñita drive Highway 200 North towards Compestella and Tepic. After leaving
Las Varas, the road is narrow with few shoulders. The highway twists and
turns upwards through kilometer after kilometer of trees and some farmland.
Before you reach Compestella, signs clearly mark the Guadalajara toll road
(Highway 15) that will bypass both Compestella and Tepic.
Take
that turn.

You
will almost immediately see large agave plants on both the right and left
side of the highway. These dark – almost blue – plants resemble a giant
pineapple head; some reach over 2 - 3 meters in diameter. This plant is the
guts of the revered Mexican Tequila.
The
remainder of the drive will continue in an upward direction over hills and
around mountains. You will pass a lava field from a somewhat recent eruption
and a short time later, a small pyramid site.
You can
bypass the town of Tequila, the birthplace and namesake of that very special
brew, although it is an interesting stop and worth the effort.
The
ride takes about 4-41/2 hours to Guadalajara. Remember that when you leave
the State of Nayarit and enter Jalisco you set your clock ahead one hour.
The cost for a car for all the tolls is approximately $20. – for a motor
home or 5th wheel around $30.
General Road Conditions:
The
asphalt is in good condition with a few bumpy spots. Once on the toll
highway it is generally 2 lanes each way with shoulders in case of a
breakdown. From the Coast to the Interior you are crossing mountains and
therefore are going around and up thousands of feet. It is most comfortable
to drive in the morning when it is cool.

Log and Driving Guide
We are
confident that our road logs and driving guides will make your highway
experiences just that much better and easier. Regardless of whether you are
driving an RV or a suburban, a bike or a pick-up, our road logs will assist your journey. Even 20
year veterans of the route have benefited from the information.
We decided to present the road from a driving perspective going SOUTH. When
your are looking at the Log, you read from the bottom of the page and read
up. The Pacific Ocean, for example, would always be on your right, just as
you would view it from your driver's seat.
The KM markings are the markings that you will see as you drive. It doesn't
matter if your vehicle reads in miles or kilometers. You just read the signs
on the road to get your bearings. Sometimes one highway combines with
another and old kilometer signs are left up. Not to worry, just continue to
read the guide.
Some of the best navigation points are the Pemex Station numbers clearly
marked on all gas station signs. Topes (Mexican speed bumps) are marked in
the guide just to remind you to go slow. We included Military and
Agriculture check points even though we know these can change frequently.
(Generally they are on one side of the state border or another between the Mexican
states.)
